Does anyone else "hear electricity"?

Just that really. I've always wondered if this is normal. I can't get to sleep because I can hear a low pitched hum..I always hear it but tonight it's annoying me, & the only way I describe it is, it sounds like electricity?? Weird!

I could go outside and rip a tree out the ground at times.

Sorry @TheBluntCrab, I know this wasn't intentionally funny but the image in my mind is cracking me up!

I can just see an angry woman whose lost the plot, running round the local park, ripping out trees with her bare hands 🤣🤣

😂😂😂 it's literally the only thing I can compare the rage of a horrible noise too. Honetsly, absolute rage 😂

I'll keep my eye on my local Facebook group just in case! 🤣🤣

TheBluntCrab · 01/02/2026 00:21

I have been known to sit there and literally rock back and fourth with my hands over my ears cos I feel like my head will come explode. Stresses me out. My DP thinks I'm mad 😂

This can also be a symptom of ADHD.

MadisonMarieParksValetta · 01/02/2026 00:25

Yes I hear fucking everything. I honest to God should be studied. Its actually miserable sometimes. And I annoy my family so much with it too.

I'm the same, I hear everything and then it winds me up when no one else can hear it. I know my DS can hear it too cos he covers his ears ALOT even when it's relatively quiet. He just cant tell me, bless him.

Yes! I can always hear it I'm very sensitive to sound in general. I do wonder if I'm autistic for many reasons. Sound is definitely a massive sensory issue for me.

I'm the same. It's like a really bad overwhelming and stressed feeling and I crave silence when it all feels too much. I'm the same with touch. I can't have someone constantly touching me, it gives me the same deep seated brain rage.

Yes.

But I can also see air. I confused my mum a lot when I was small, asking her what all the coloured dots in front of my eyes were. It's just the pixels that make up the world. But I don't think other people can see it.

This is likely visual snow syndrome and phosphenes.

It can be permanent or intermittent, and it can be because of misfiring neurons, stress, hypersensitivity, astigmatism, and neurodivergence.

Not all visual snow syndrome looks the same for everybody and not all phosphenes look the same for everybody either.

TessSaysYes · 01/02/2026 00:37

Could it be the neighbours heat pump. I hear electricity too...either that or I ve been to too many night clubs 🤣🤣🤣

Pieceofpurplesky · 01/02/2026 00:37

Yes. I have to put music on to sleep to drown out the fridge.

For me it's not the fridge, strangely that doesnt bother me. I can pinpoint where this sound tonight is actually coming from. It's just there?! I switched everything off, even the boiler. Cos it's doing my head in and I can still hear it. Even with DP snoring loudly next to me. Which strangely enough, doesn't enrage me as much 😂

Can you not turn it off if you can actually pinpoint it?

No, but one of my DC has always been able to hear bats. I thought he would grow out of it and perhaps he will one day, but he can still hear them now in his early 20s. We've got bats in our roof.

Fascinating. What does a bat even sound like.

It is a very common phenomena, most people will experience some sort of visual snow at some point in their lives.

There are so many potential causes for it, like being extremely tired, overstimulated or having a medical condition that prevents the brain filtering it and filling in gaps of vision, photoreceptors misfiring, that the outliers are people who never experience it ever even if for most people it's acute instances.

I've always had some sort of visual snow, like floaters, flecks of glitter, the odd grainy vision, but it's got significantly more prevalent for me since I started experiencing exploding head syndrome.

EmeraldRoulette · 01/02/2026 00:49

How has no one mentioned The Hum yet?

I can hear that. I hadn't thought of it as hearing electricity. I don't hear it every night. It was particularly bad when I was in London. But that makes sense if it's electricity, I was probably hearing loads of it. I don't really have it now I've moved out, but occasionally I hear noises at night that I cannot explain to anyone else. they're kind of consistent. So it's a variation on the hum, I suppose. Always a low continuous tone. I'm aware that some nights it will depend how my brain is working as well.

@TheBluntCrab do you only hear it at night?

There's a lot of documented Hums. I think the most documented one though is the Bristol hum.

I experienced this when I went to visit a friend in Chepstow, but since coming back home I haven't experienced it since.

Luckily I'd heard of the hum before I experienced it and had a lightbulb "ah, it's rhe hum" moment, when I thought I was actually going mad with some sort of auditory hallucination.

No way! I used to get this as a a child, EHS and I've sent ages researching it before and there's not much out there! I remember on many occasions being laid in bed as a pre teen, and dropping off to sleep and then having this horrendous screaming, screeching sounds in my head. Not my ears, but in my actual head. It was terrifying!

I hear it at all times of day really. Even when there is other back ground noise I can hear it. It's like a high pitched hum. I don't only hear it at my house but I may hear it if I'm away, or visiting somewhere. It's like I'm extra sensitive to sound. I don't know. It's weird! To me it just sounds like electricity 🤔

Tbh, I did have a dr once diagnosed me with auditory hallucinations. 🤔

You see. I can do loud music. No problem. I love loud music. I can't do the niggly sounds like this electrical hum, I hate sirens, I hate screaming children 😂 (the noise, not actual children) crowded places where there's lots of chatter... It is like a physical pain! It makes my brain hurt!

Autism 😜

Yeah, I've often thought I had something undiagnosed, and my complete sensory overload has actually inke got worse the older I've gotten.
