Does anyone else "hear electricity"?

Just that really. I've always wondered if this is normal. I can't get to sleep because I can hear a low pitched hum..I always hear it but tonight it's annoying me, & the only way I describe it is, it sounds like electricity?? Weird!

The hiss of electrical items drives me mad, as do ticking clocks. I have driven my dh crazy over the years hunting for which appliance it is I need to turn off so I can sleep.

I gave my parents my clock because the ticking was so loud! You can get silent clocks

When I moved out, I could hear a strange noise from the radiator and asked dad to check it. It was the water going around!

It has been questioned whether I have undiagnosed autism or something, by many people! I did wonder if maybe that was it? As I read lots of neuro divergent people struggle to tune out noises/sounds. I know my DS who is autistic quite severely hears things and they bother him much more than it would neuro typical.

Not to bang the b12 drum too much but deficiency is also associated with neurological and sensory symptoms of autism.... and per your earlier post, blood tests are no good as you can have free b12 in your blood but it doesn't mean it's being processed and used in your body.

HeadyLamarr · 03/02/2026 17:35

Is that related to the hum you can feel in walls when you move your hands just above them? That always seemed like electricity to me - I could sort of hear it but mostly feel it in my palms.

FunkyMonks · 03/02/2026 17:52

Yes it drives me insane can hear the it off devices like the tv at night.

Barleycat · 03/02/2026 17:55

I think there was an episode of QI about this.

Candlestickinthediningroom · 03/02/2026 18:32

I can hear when a light switch is on but there's no bulb in the light. If that makes sense.

keepingsanity · 03/02/2026 18:54

I can hear the radio on the when it’s switched off!

I looked up visual snow, and it's not like that. I don't have blurred vision. It's not intrusive. It's been described very well on this thread, and I remember being very small and asking about them. Weirdo was the consensus diagnosis in my family:)

Looked up the science thank you @SerendipityJane , which confirms what many on this thread can hear is recognised and quite normal as a result of magnetic electricity. I have no doubt I have this wrong, but it's enough for me it's an effect of human cause.

What would be interesting is research into the hum today compared with many years ago. To know where the hum is stronger, where people are more affected, is there a correlation with adhd and similar being diagnosed, any health issues, allergies.

Does the onset of Mobile phones everywhere make it worse, the air we see somehow affected by sound waves bouncing, wifi etc?

What about AI and the churning of data centres destroying the enviroment everytime AI is used. Chatgbt.

There have been attempts to block the hum. Unsuccessful, really. I can't stand the hum of electric sockets even when off.

It's all so interesting.

TaffetaPhrases · 04/02/2026 03:24

I can tell if I’m dehydrated by the sound of my wee. Also to me tap water tastes like swimming pool and I honestly can’t drink it. Lots of adhd and autism here

Nat6999 · 04/02/2026 04:40

Are you by any chance autistic? Both me & ds are & have this weird supersonic type hearing, can hear are flea fart at 10 miles but struggle to hear if having a conversation in a crowded room or if there is backgroud noise. Ds has been diagnosed with auditory processing disorder & now wears hearing aids which help with conversation but partially block out the supersonic hearing.

DontKillSteve · 04/02/2026 07:12

I can hear the hum. I can’t bear certain noises. I can’t tolerate classical music. I can hear those noise things they place in areas to stop teenagers congregating and I’m in my 50s. Don’t get me started on smells, my sense is off the scale. I can smell everything. I’m not at all autistic.

Nincompoo · 04/02/2026 07:15

I used to be able to but now I’ve got. Tinnitus so hear that instead.

Very rarely, when I run a tap, I can catch a faintest whiff of chlorine.

Which is no surprise - there is a minute amount put in.

Human smell is far better than people think,

The human nose is sensitive to geosmin and can detect it at concentrations as low as 0.4 parts per billion

I can hear it on pylons and substations at massively high voltage but not at the 230V domestic level.

If you hold a fluorescent tube up underneath a pylon, it will light up. That's how they control our minds. All this fuss over vaccines and 5G is a carefully put out fairy story to divert from the truth.

yoursweetpotatoesarebland · 04/02/2026 18:19

Yes! I didn’t realise this was a thing other people can do too until now! I can feel it too - if I touch wires etc I know if something is on or off

WaryCrow · 04/02/2026 20:03

I can hear electricity if I think about it kind of thing. Mostly I block it out. I heard ‘the hum’ once or twice, not sure if was the result of waking out of nightmares or magnetic fields.

I think chlorine concentration and therefore smells in water depend on where you are: not only in the country but how close you are to the water supply centre. There’s more where I am now than in the past. We use an extra water filter.

ThejustbrothersCarlenaNSoul · 04/02/2026 20:32

Only when it comes out of my bank account.😉

Sidebeforeself · 04/02/2026 20:38

Every night I go to bed and ask DH if he can hear a thudding. Doesn’t matter where we are I can hear it. My blood pressure is fine so it’s not that .

KimHwn · 04/02/2026 20:43

Fascinating thread! I can tell when I walk into a room if an electric device is plugged in. Very high pitched sound. Also have had exploding head syndrome, and I've wondered about ASD...
I am quite selective about music too. A lot of it sounds actively unpleasant to me, not exactly because of what it is, just that that exact mix of sounds doesn't work well in my ears if that makes sense?! This- and the other symptoms of ASD- have become more prevalent since the mask slipping properties of perimenopause.

I do love a low drone though.

Mycroissant · 31/01/2026 23:55

That sounds like "visual snow" which is a symptom of B12 deficiency

Optometrist here - it's not it's fairly normal to see it.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 04/02/2026 20:58

Yes. I can hear overhead lights quite a lot of the time. It is VERY annoying, so I have to stick with quiet lamps (tried and tested beforehand!). I struggle with tuning out the noise (that, and noisy clocks... I can't be in the same room as one, and can't wear an analogue wristwatch because of the ticking, which drives me mad). It used to irritate the life out of most of my family members, so it is much better- and quieter- now that I live on my own!

SerendipityJane · 04/02/2026 21:41

Fascinating thread! I can tell when I walk into a room if an electric device is plugged in. Very high pitched sound.

Beyond magnetostriction, any component that passes current can physically vibrate, and give off all sorts of harmonics. Especially of they are mounted on something that can act like a drum ....

E2A: Theres' no "hearing" electricity. There's hearing it's effects in circuits.
