How much do you pay for gas & electricity each month?

I cut down massively on my gas and electricity. Blankets and tons of clothes on during the day. Heating on only 1 hour in the morning and 2 hours spread over the evening. I'm now paying £150 per month. Dual fuel discount with Eon. How does this compare with everyone else?

3 bed house,2 adults roughly £250 a month. I think we could see a big difference when we change our electric shower when we have the bathroom refitted,dh has extremely looong showers,we use the time drier a lot too.

Makingpeace · 31/01/2026 01:25

3 bed mid terrace. Heating on a thermostat set constantly to 17.5 degrees. Family of 4. £100 a month.

Nat6999 · 31/01/2026 02:35

I pay £80 a month with Eon for dual fuel, I really only need to pay around £60 but prefer to keep some extra credit on the account. 2 bed ground floor flat.

£585pcm. Big house.

Oh my at last someone else who has to pay a small fortune. Our house is big too. But we really need to improve the insulation especially for the upstairs rooms. Then there is DH's hobby which uses at least £150 electric each month. Plus charging the car, running multiple fridge freezers, daily use dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer and multiple PCs. The solar panels help for now as we get a fair bit for what they make.

NewYearNewMee · 31/01/2026 05:51

@RockGirl British Gas!

riversflows · 31/01/2026 06:10

3 bed semi £50 a month

EmpressaurusKitty · 31/01/2026 06:12

£55 per month for both with British Gas, in a one bedroom flat that’s well enough insulated that we’re warm without needing the heating on much. Both accounts are in credit.

It’s just me & the cat, so only one or two loads of washing per week & no tumble drying.

FriendsWithoutBenefits12 · 31/01/2026 06:33

It depends how much I use

I pay each month based on what I use

5 bed det. Last month £113.00 for both

August was £46.00 for both

GreatWhiteWail · 31/01/2026 06:39

In summer, £30 gas and about £80 electric month.

In winter, about £180 gas and £110 electric each month (we're in Scotland so it's cold).

We have an electric car, and a nighttime electricity tariff which saves loads (I also try to organise myself to use it for the tumble dryer).

Lostsoultrip · 31/01/2026 06:44

My direct debit is £68 but I top it up slightly in winter as my last bill was £120. In the spring, summer and early autumn it's usually about £65 but I'm careful with the heating and don't have long showers. I don't use a tumble dryer.

Ginmonkeyagain · 31/01/2026 06:46

£75 a month dual duel for a 2 bed flat with two of us. We don't stint on heating and are always in credit so I think it could be lower.

We have a smart meter and take part in load shifting trials - so if we can use less electricity at peak periods (generally evening week days, which is easy for us as we both go out to work and eat fairly late), then we get free electricity on Sunday mornings. I use that time fot washing and drying clothes.

Newbeginningsandhappy · 31/01/2026 06:53

£230 5 bed detached house. Rubbish thermostat we’ve inherited. Plumbers and engineer husband can’t make sense of it so have heat on at times we don’t need. Also ongoing issue with radiator in the living room. Has been flushed out. Can only solve if we start digging up floorboards. Plan to change to NEST and add thermostats to upstairs radiators. Always in credit but would be nice to reduce monthly bill.

PoemsForTea · 31/01/2026 07:17

Please dont switch because someone has a lower direct debit, compare the tariff unit costs and standing charges. No one here will live the same way in our homes or have the same pattern of lifestyle/usage. Decide on unit price and get a smart meter or read meters monthly so you know your exact annual usage.
When you are shopping around they will be able to give a much more accurate and reliable quote if you know your numbers/usage.

£63 combined. 3 bed house. Just me and I wfh

whirlyhead · 31/01/2026 07:54

3 bed detached single storey with 2 adults. At home all day. Electric is about €105 a month (partner works from home so has air con in in his outdoor office). We have full amount of vat stuck on utility bills here and the standing charge is €30 a month. No tumble dryer, 4 loads of washing a week, don’t use the central heating, just put the log burner on about 4pm and we use about €90 of wood a month at the moment. I’m in Spain which has high utility bills for Europe (and we have a lot of power cuts - 18 last week alone!!)

Littlebitpsycho · 31/01/2026 08:06

£165 electric only, grade 2 listed 2 bed 2 bath flat with high ceilings and single glazing - its an absolute pig to heat!

JackJarvisEsq · 31/01/2026 08:11

£167 dual for a 3 story 4 bed end terrace

3 people, one and a half work at home

we have solar panels so I’m guessing they make a difference

S72 · 31/01/2026 08:18

I've recently moved from a ground floor 2 bed flat conversion to a 2 bed detached house.

My gas has rocketed from £15 per week to around £60. I can't quite believe it.

I tried having it on less but within a few days noticed bad condensation on the walls, so now try to keep it to at least 17 degrees during the day.

I'm not eligible for insulation grants so will slowly have to improve it over time.

Elec is about £20 per week, if I use the tumble dryer. I'm running a dehumidifier 24/7.

DancingLions · 31/01/2026 08:36

3 adults here all day every day (wfh) £25 a week electric, so £100 a month. Gas is variable. In summer, very little, not much more than the standing charge. The most I put in on a freezing cold week is £40 but more often £20 a week in winter. We’re in a 4bed Victorian with single glazing and I never skimp on heat. If it’s cold, it goes on. Both on payg meters.

They say meters are more expensive but I can’t envisage getting a direct debit any lower than what I pay now and I feel more in control of it this way. I’m ok with spending a bit more in winter and less in summer.

£155 4 bed terrace house. Tumble dryer goes on a couple of times a week. Heating on for an hour in the morning, then goes on at about 3pm till 10pm thermostat around 19-20 c

Maraudingmarauders · 31/01/2026 08:44

4bed semi with an electric car, on oil. We use about £200-£220 a month electric and about £50 a month oil. Oil we sometimes have to top up when buying a tank/half a tank as prices change a lot.
DH has a diesel car so we haven’t got rid of all of our fuel costs.

We run the heating whenever we want (have a toddler) though DH uses an oil radiator in his office when wfh. Tumbledrier most days. House is a leaky sieve though we’ve re-insulated our loft in the last couple of years.

Thatladdo · 31/01/2026 08:55

Big old house in Northern England, plus electric car, 1 adult & 1 teen daughter.

£180 Electric
Around £200 in Oil, Heating set to 20, frequently on 1 or 2 hour boost to 25 (never gets there!)

Refuse to be miserable because im cold if i can help it - theres plenty other things to be miserable about! 🙂

HeadyLamarr · 31/01/2026 09:08

£240, 4 adults wfh, and a couple of vivariums to keep warm 24/7. I despair of getting it down.

HostaCentral · 31/01/2026 09:14
