How many cars have you had?

I was just thinking about my cars (past and present) and thought I’d ask.

First car was a purple Fiesta (diesel) which was a hand me down first from my dad who gave it to my brother, who gave it to me. I traded it in (just as it hit 120k on the clock) and got £500 px for my nearly new Peugeot.

I had 2 more Peugeot 208s after that (loved them both) before trading in for an old style rounded Juke and then later (after 21 years of driving), finally being able to afford a new one (another Juke).

Starting to think I’ll need a new car again so I’m leaning back toward a Peugeot.

If you’re a driver, how many cars have you had?

I am 35 and I’ve had 3 cars. 4 if you count the one I’m now sharing with my husband.
Two mini coopers (one was a soft top), a Hyundai Tucson and now a MG4 electric

mcmuffin22 · 28/01/2026 07:33

7 in 30 years of driving. The first 3 were shared with my sister and came in quick succession (one or other of us kept bashing into things).

99pwithaflake · 28/01/2026 07:37

I’ve had:

Hyundai Getz
Fiesta
Ford Ka
Hyundai i10

When my current one dies (hopefully not for a long time) I’ll get another Hyundai as it’s been absolutely fantastic and I love driving it.

MTOandMe · 28/01/2026 07:38

I’ve had two! A Peugeot 107 and now an Evoque.

Getting a 3 year old Peugeot 208 next month!

Always bought cars outright and never financed them hence why only two!

TappyGilmore · 28/01/2026 07:46

The very first car I had, my parents owned and paid for upkeep even though it was mine to drive, so I tend to not count that one.

So then 3 cars that were really mine over a period of 16 years. My current car is the only one that I’ve had brand new. I just got it right before Christmas.

Clearinguptheclutter · 28/01/2026 07:50

I’m 47
Six.
the last four have been shared with dh and technically are his though I was the main driver. My first was my dad’s. I think I have only technically owned one in that case.

cornbunting · 28/01/2026 07:55

Currently on car number four (in about 25 years), all have been second hand. I've had two brand new bicycles in that time too though, which feel a great deal more special.

Edit: if we're including DH's car ownership in that time too then it takes us to the giddy heights of five cars total

CoodleMoodle · 28/01/2026 07:58

My first car was a Nissan Micra when I was 17, then I got a Ford Fiesta. I loved that car to death. DH got a Honda Jazz in 2014 and when the Fiesta was scrapped (devastating!) he started cycling to work and I took over the Jazz. That's still my car now and I love it. Not as much as the Fiesta but still.

DH had a VW Up for a little while and I'd occasionally drive that if necessary. He's currently got a Touran and I haven't tried it yet. I'm a bit nervous of how big it is compared to my tiny Jazz!

UniquePinkSwan · 28/01/2026 07:59

A lot but I don’t drive old cars. It’s bad financially

2old4thispoo · 28/01/2026 08:02

6 in 30 years. Always bought good cars and kept them as long as possible

YouWillNeverGuessMyUsername · 28/01/2026 08:05

Driving 24 years, 4 cars.

First was a Vauxhall Novat that was my parents old one. Then I bought a vauxhall Corsa, then a Ford Fiesta, now have a VW Tiguan... Will probably be replaced in 3-4 years.

HelpMeGetThrough · 28/01/2026 08:06

8 in the last 14 years and about to get another one. These have all been company cars.

Audi S3 - Pile of shit

Multiple Vauxhall Insignia’s - I liked them, as they were top of the range and were perfect motorway cars.

Toyota Corolla Hybrid - Good car and can go forever on a tank of petrol and is very comfortable.

About to get another Corolla, but higher spec, so quite happy with that.

Cars I’ve bought myself 5. First car was a Mini Metro.

Is it?

How so?

Buying an older car at £10000 and keeping it running for 10 years is cheaper than buying 3 new cars in that time.

Blanketpolicy · 28/01/2026 09:11

38 years of driving, 7 cars

One we had <1 year as written off after a bump. Longest time we had one was 10 years. Only one was new and financed, rest were used and bought outright from savings.

peacefulpeach · 28/01/2026 09:17

Over 25yrs
VW Polo great little car
Mini ? problematic
Fiat 500 worst car in the history of cars
Lexus suv Perfect but a bit too big for me
Mini Cooper perfect

Only 4 - I'm 47 and didn't learn to drive until I was in my 30s though!
My first car was a Ford KA - then I had two Mazda MX5s which I absolutely loved although they just don't work on the two days a year we have snow!
I've had a Mini for the last 6 years. I absolutely love it and am planning to keep it until it won't work any more. I'd love another MX5 when the Mini finally dies!

One of the three I have is an Abarth Spider - basically an MX5 in an Italian body and with an Italian engine. Completely agree with your comments about snow - being light and rear wheel drive, it needs lots of weight in the boot when it’s slippery to stand any chance of getting somewhere (like up my driveway…)

BagaChips · 28/01/2026 09:52

I've been driving 11 years and have had 3 cars. DH on the other hand has been driving 14 years and has had 15 cars

dailyconniptions · 28/01/2026 09:52

11 I think:
Fiat 133
Fiat 126
Fiat Panda
Fiat Cinquecento
Citroën ZX
Citroën Picasso
Fiat Panda
Citroën Picasso
Citroën Picasso
Peugeot 108
Toyota Yaris

TeenToTwenties · 28/01/2026 09:56

Fiesta B reg bought 1988
Fiesta can't remember letter
Corsa (didn't like it, have blotted it from my memory)
Focus 52 reg
Focus 11 reg
Focus 21 reg bought last year

So that is 6 cars in 38 years of driving, current one will hopefully do 6+ years

Ruby0707 · 28/01/2026 10:05

2 in 23 years.

Current car is 20 years old. I could probably do with a new one but it's still going so I can't bear to spend the money!

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 28/01/2026 10:09

One, as a teenager. Sold it before I went to uni.
I don't drive now.

VegQueen · 28/01/2026 10:11

None! I drive my husband’s ford fiesta but he had it before we met so don’t really consider it mine. I passed my test 8 years ago and live in London so don’t need a car that often.

InMySpareTime · 28/01/2026 10:12

My household has had three cars in 20ish years.
Two Peugeots and a Citroen.

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 28/01/2026 10:18

Been driving for 40 years

I have had 11 cars, 5 were company cars so replaced every 3 years, my first car was an old banger and only lasted a year, the second wasn’t much better. I now buy luxury and keep for longer.
3 Astras
1 Volkswagen
3 Volvos
1 BMW
1 Audi
1 Mercedes

DH has had fewer in the same time
1 Citroen
2 Astras
3 Audis
1 EV

DD has been driving for almost 10 years and is still on her first car

HavfrueDenizKisi · 28/01/2026 10:21

Driving 35 years and think it’s 7:

Ford Fiesta
Renault clio (from new)
golf gti
audi q3 (from new)
audi q7
Porsche macan s (this one was nicked off our drive a few months back so wasn’t planning to change cars)
mini countryman (from new)

if not from new then ex demo cars.

Don’t feel like that’s too many cars seeing as I’ve been driving since 18!
