Did anyone else who went to primary school in the mid-80s have to do PE in their vest and pants?

I was telling my colleagues who are in their twenties about it and they looked at me like this: 🙄

Did anyone else experience this? Or was my school slightly strange?

Never, ever. But then I was schooled in Spain. Everyone had those blue pe kits with white lines down the side of legs and arms. I started school in 1980. Takes me back.
I think it´s a bit weird actually.

Owly11 · 26/01/2026 10:30

Yep.

Not this again 🙄.

Honestly, this topic should be banned and all of you who are scrambling to recount your stories should think hard about the motives for this thread appearing so often 🤮.

I completely agree

We did :( early 90s

trappedCatAsleepOnMe · 26/01/2026 10:32

Early years of Pirmary school yes - that what I had in 80s.

In 90s secondary in early years we had communal changing rooms and 2 lines of showers you had to run though both naked while PE teahcer watched with your towel at end - and if you couldn't due to period then had to say that to entire changing room.

Had posters insist the shower thing much be made up - but no it suddenly stopped just before my GCSEs - so younger sister never had to do it.

Thankfully my DC have never had anything like this in their schools.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 26/01/2026 10:32

Yes, normal in primary school in mid to late 80s in my experience.

MadAsAMongoose · 26/01/2026 10:32

Yes in infant school in mid to late 80s. We didn't have a PE kit, just undressed to vest and pants and put plimsolls on. I remember finding it strange that a PE kit was required when we went up to juniors. Girls and boys got changed together in the classroom up to year 6 - does that still happen?

Borgonzola · 26/01/2026 10:33

Infant school in the early 90s, yup

zurigo · 26/01/2026 10:33

Our games kit (in senior school!!!) was an Aertex shirt and a pair of school issue pants that were designed to go over underpants. It was an all girls school and games staff were all female, but still. What's wrong with a pair of shorts?

Edited to say: this was in the late 1980s

elliejjtiny · 26/01/2026 10:37

Yes, but only if we forgot our pe kit in the infants. I hated the black leotard we wore so I used to pretend I'd forgotten it. In juniors we had red t shirts and black knickers for PE.

chunkyBoo · 26/01/2026 10:40

Yes, I initially went to an infants school where we wore shorts and t shirt, when the new school I want to it was vest and pants I was very 😵 .. that was just a year, so back to shorts and tee shirt in juniors than god - I still remember it now, 45 years later!

BestZebbie · 26/01/2026 10:42

I left infants at the very end of the 1980s and they were still doing vest-and-pants PE then with no plans to change.
I remember getting special My Little Pony and Rainbow Brite matching vest-and-pants sets especially to wear on PE days!
In Juniors I think we wore our own T-shirt and shorts, then at secondary there was a uniform PE kit.

gamerchick · 26/01/2026 10:45

Yep all the way through primary school. Was glad to get to comp and those little skirts we used to have to wear.

TheWorlds · 26/01/2026 10:47

I went to school in the 90s and remember doing this

scalt · 26/01/2026 10:49

Oh yes, at infant school in the 1980s, but always indoors. We had to undress to vest and pants in the classroom, then put our shoes on our bare feet, and walk past the other classrooms of children who would giggle, to the assembly hall, before doing the PE barefoot. We often did exercises involving following instructions from a posh voice on a cassette player. "Curl up small, like the Ugly Duckling". When we learned about time, our teacher timed us getting dressed afterwards, using sand timers. I remember a couple of boys being told sternly "leave your underpants alone".

In secondary school in 1991, boys in year 7 and 8 were made to do PE with one side in shirts and the other in "skins", i.e. bare-chested, even outdoors. They did this separately from girls, but it was well-known.

Oceangrey · 26/01/2026 10:49

In the 90s!
We had school coloured PE pants to put over the top (not long enough to be shorts) but if we forgot them had to wear our own actual knickers.

Nos4r2 · 26/01/2026 10:49

Yes in the late 60s early 70s and the school caretaker always seemed to walk through the hall when we had p.e. what a creep and they didn't do checks in those days.

pippapipps · 26/01/2026 10:51

Yes in mid seventies and early eighties..so bloody weird now when you think about it

Nos4r2 · 26/01/2026 10:53

Oh and you had to sit cross leg on the floor with a skirt on at assembly.

BringBackCatsEyes · 26/01/2026 10:56

Yet these days girls get to wear skorts or tracksuits bottoms etc for PE, and then stroll around the shopping mall in Nike Pros and buttock revealing skirts. No judgement - just funny how times change!

AngelsWithSilverWings · 26/01/2026 10:57

Primary in the mid 70's an we had big blue PE knickers and a white sleeveless vest we had to wear.

If you forgot your kit it was your normal knickers and bare chest if you were not lucky enough to be wearing a vest under your clothes.

This happened to me once and I remember feeling so exposed and embarrassed.

Meteorite87 · 26/01/2026 10:58

Yes and even on a sports day once, with lots of other parents and adults there.

Mischance · 26/01/2026 11:00

My childhood was spent earlier than the 70s and we had the dreaded gym knickers - navy blue bag-like items with elastic round the thighs. How we hated them!

Nourishinghandcream · 26/01/2026 11:04

Absolutely a thing in the 70's.

I was lucky as being the youngest, I had hand me down gym kit but many in the infants did indeed carry out PE in vest & pants (just normal underwear, not PE blue knickers!).
Remember walking between schools (facilities were often shared between neighbouring infant schools) and lots of children were literally walking the streets in their underwear (summer term obviously).

Ihaveoflate · 26/01/2026 11:04

Yes, right up until the equivalent of end of Year 4 (aged 9) and this was the early 90s.
