Just that. Interested to see if anyone says what I'm thinking...

Windermere has lots to offer but it’s so busy all of the time, you spend half of the time in queues. And you’re right, it rains about 98% of the time so you spend your time wet and queuing.

Indeed, I was going to mention the crowds in my original post but forgot. Although just remembered it has L’Enclume which is definitely in its favour!

Busybeemumm · 26/01/2026 08:05

Maldives! Beautiful but boring after about day 3!

Goatymum · 26/01/2026 08:30

Great Yarmouth
Paphos

popdepop · 26/01/2026 04:25

Paphos-Cyprus. Tacky

I put that too. People raved about it before we went. The only interesting bit is the Roman ruins.

The Isle of Wight and, I feel terrible saying it, but the Bahamas. Oh, and the Canary Islands.

Edited

Agree about the Bahamas
nice beaches but deadly dull and the bit I a was in was full of entitled noisy Americans (and I know plenty of nice Americans)

There’s loads to do in Budapest it’s lovely

I found myself in awe of how stunning everything was, especially at night. I'd go back in a heartbeat. My 16yo DS loved it to. We did most of in on foot day 1, 2nd all cabs 😂 loved the thermal spa also.

A former colleague of mine once had to spend a week in Aberdeen for work. When he got back he said he'd never been anywhere so depressing. The whole place was grey, he said, and when it rained (which was most of the time), dark grey.

Great summary of Aberdeen, I’m originally from there. So boring you might be forced to visit the maritime museum out of desperation. To be fair the art gallery is nice and on the occasional sunny day it has a beautiful sandy beach. Never criticise Aberdeen to an Aberdonian who still lives there, though, they have no concept that interesting places exist.

crackofdoom · 26/01/2026 09:10

I used to be a tour guide, and most of the big ticket, hyped up attractions we used to visit are genuinely good.

Except for Culloden. Which is....a field.

People could save themselves from all this boredom with a bit of forward planning and googling. Go where your interests lie.

I agree. Can't help thinking that the Berlin and Rome haters in particular did zero research in advance of their trip.

Blackpool, went on a day trip in winter as a teen and depression descended. Got back on the coach with my mate because that was preferable to anything Blackpool could offer and I sat on the bus and felt teary that people had to actually live there and manage to not get mentally ill somehow. I think we even struggled to find an M and S which would have redeemed the day for us. Even now if a town is miserable, I think shit it's Blackpool 1987 vibe..

Blackpool is absolutely dire.

We recently visited Lytham which isn’t far away and decided to drive back through Blackpool to see “the lights”. We were shocked at just how bad it’s got but asked the dc’s if they wanted to get out for fish n chips and a go in the arcade.

The fact it was a resounding “NOOoooo!!” even from children speaks volumes!

I thought that about Budapest.

There's not many cities I've been that I can't do pretty much everything I want to in 3 days. (We don't stop). Budapest is one of those. Rome is another. I've never been to Berlin but I'd be surprised if it wasn't another of those cities.

DrToothandtheElectricMayhem · 26/01/2026 09:29

Most boring:
Brussels - ok for a day trip, boring for more than 24 hours
Banbury - dire
Canberra - imperial war museum was good, the rest was dull - full of politicians and govt workers 🤣
Sharm el Sheikh - man made direness
Copenhagen - been for work several times and can do it in 24 hours. Anything more than that, it becomes boring.
Marseilles - grubby, and anything more than a day is too long

Best -
Iceland, spectacular scenery and largely untouched by western chain stores etc
Seville - great for mooching, bullfighting history 😵‍💫 and food
Berlin - the history is interesting, as was a day trip to Sachsenhausen
San Gimignano
Montenegran scenery - cities were a bit dull though after a day
Krakow
The Lake District

leporello · 26/01/2026 09:30

Not the whole of Tenerife but we once stayed at a dying resort miles from any action. It was February and the miserable little 'strip' was mostly closed. Dd1 lost her favourite soft toy and we spent most of the week doing a fingertip search of the hotel. It was freezing (warm all year round my arse) and the pool was unheated. I'd warn against the resort but imagine it's all been razed to the ground by now, plus I can't remember what it was called.

I remember arriving in a town in Germany as a child once on a Sunday and it being totally and beyond dead as everything was closed. I think it was Aachen.

That's what i loved about living in Germany, Sunday peace.

Kennedy space center, Florida. I felt like I was in a blue Peter studio 🤣. My husband thought it was fantastic 😊

God yes!!! What a 70’s throwback! Also nearly scorched to death walking across the car park for about 2 miles to reach the entrance in 100 degree heat.

Also re people saying Isle of Wight - it’s a funny old place isn’t it? We went to the festival a couple of years ago and did a bit of exploring whilst there and I was so underwhelmed. We went to Cowes which looked alright but everything was shut - I was so shocked they wouldn’t want to capitalise on the festival goers wanting somewhere to eat and drink. We did eventually find a nice-ish cafe bar next to the water. I googled “nicest places to visit on IOW” and cowes was No.1 and then Ventnor so we went there too before leaving for home - it was a very long walk down a very steep hill to a very boring and quite rundown strip (of again closed shops/cafes) along the beachfront which was like something out of “Heartbeat”. It was also completely misty and overcast so we couldn’t even see the sea (I realise this is uncontrollable 😂)

And Newport, where we had to go to buy a charger - just wow!

We are going again this year! (Primarily bc the Cure are playing).

Haha! No I went with my two train mad stepsons. It was a bitterly cold day too so pretty miserable for me. They loved it though.

Sounds bad. I went on a school trip about 30 years ago and still remember how bored I was! Glad your boys enjoyed it :)

Paramaribo2025 · 25/01/2026 14:23

Also, Jeju Island

I’m scandalised to see jeju island on this list ! 😂

I went there when I lived in Seoul on a weekend trip, paid for by my friends workplace.

We had to go to some kind of food tasting festival but apart from that we just drove around and ate and went to beaches.

It had a very good relaxing vibe and I had a lot of fun BUT I accept I was only there for a weekend so it may be different living there! I think I was also lucky going with a group of Koreans and getting driven around everywhere.

Have you been to Busan? That was my favourite place in Korea.

Milford, Co Cork

Okay, but I mean Milford is a dot. A small village. Not exactly a tourist destination. Maybe your expectations were too high?🤔

Ventimiglia, Italy.

We took the train from Monte Carlo to view the Roman ruins.
The walk from the station via the rubbish strewn beach/graffitied seafront was utterly depressing and when we reached the ruins they were closed!
We caught the next train back so spent approximately an hour and a half there which was an hour and 20 minutes too long!
However, it did confirm our family's uncanny super power of being able to find a MacDonalds, (that’s the 10 minutes we used for a toilet and water break), whenever we are in an unfamiliar place without needing any help from google maps. This is extremely handy when there’s no internet and you need the loo😂😂

The Old Town of Ventimiglia is lovely, and it seems nobody goes there. It's one of those places where you're like "Surely some mistake? Where are all the tourists?!" Which makes it even nicer, because it's a medieval warren completely inhabited by normal local people.

Also, I find the food in Ventimiglia excellent and cheap, especially in the covered market.

Monaco on the other hand....that is a soulless place.

Budapest may arguably be like that, but I would say that if you're into history (and/ or contemporary culture in the case of Berlin), Rome and Berlin have a pretty much infinite number of things to see. We went to Berlin this summer for 4 nights and I felt that we'd only just scraped the surface.

And what's noteworthy is that if you look at the threads in Holidays for both these cities, everyone's recommendations are different- there aren't the same 3 sites that get recommended for lots of places.

Thurso on a Sunday. A low point on a wonderful North Coast 500 trip (good Indian restaurant though).

Maldives! Beautiful but boring after about day 3!

I haven’t been there but I would be bored of just swimming and snorkelling after a couple of days.
