How many full loads of laundry do you a week if you have a small household?

I feel like I’m constantly doing laundry! It’s just me and my 5 yo and I probably do a full load every second day. Or maybe that’s normal? I don’t know. I do go to the gym 4 times a week and always wash my gym clothes but I’ll wear regular clothes 3 or 4 times before I wash them. DD has clean tights & t shirt every day for school but the rest of her uniform she wears all week. I don’t know where it all comes from! How many loads of washing do you do (especially if you have a small household)?

Three of us ( myself and DC 16 & 13) and on average I do at least one load a day so 7 a week?

Ineedanewsofa · 19/01/2026 20:06

1x whites
1x darks
2x colours
2x towels
2x bedding
There are 3 of us!

Puctureonthewallsaysitall · 19/01/2026 20:13

3 of us (all wear adult clothes). Ds goes to the gym 5 times a week. Do 3 loads a week (occasionally 4). Do bedding/towels in rotation.

2 adults and 1 toddler. Maybe a wash every other day? Sometimes we’ll do 3 loads in a day but then not for a few days.

Tisfortired · 19/01/2026 20:15

I remember when it was just me, DH and DS, I did one dark and one light load on a Sunday.

Had 2 more babies since and the washing machine literally never stops poor thing!

NotMyRealAccount · 19/01/2026 20:18

Just DH and me. Typically three 7kg loads a week, sportswear, normal clothing, and either bedlinen or towels.

Meadowfinch · 19/01/2026 20:19

1 adult, one 17yo.

1 load of whites
1 load of colours
1 load of towels, pillowcases and flannels
1 load sheet & duvet cover

reluctantbrit · 19/01/2026 20:20

When DD was at home:
1x white
2-3x coloured, one is a hand-wash programm
1x underwear
1x towels and bedding

DH's running gear as and when used

With her at uni and only DH and me:
2-3x coloured, one is a hand-wash programm
1x towels and bedding

DH's running gear as and when used

Underwear and white is now every other week I would say.

Three a day and I still can’t keep on top of the washing, it’s bedding and towels that stress me out the most !

beautifuldaytosavelives · 19/01/2026 20:23

2 adults, 1 almost adult. Probably 7-10 a week. No uniforms, one gym goer…don’t know where it comes from!

Cairneyes · 19/01/2026 20:24

3 a week max, one lights, one darks and one bedding.

TheDandyLion · 19/01/2026 20:24

4 loads. DH, mine, towels and bedsheets.

AliasGrape · 19/01/2026 20:25

3 of us. DH and I and a 5 year old.

I feel like I do a load most, but not every day - so 5 or 6 days a week.

One is all the towels
One for bedding
Lights - sometimes x2
Darks - sometimes x2

Then there’s DH’s stinky football kit on the day(s) he plays which he’s responsible for and I usually get him to stick DD’s football kit in too as it’s the same day, and anything else that seems like it could go in with it.

Save knits up for a wool cycle - not necessarily every week just depends what I’ve been wearing.

Then there’s tea towels/ dish cloths etc but suppose that’s not a full load.

Middlemarch123 · 19/01/2026 20:26

Adult DS and me, but we both work out nearly every day. One load a day. No problem at all. Machine on early morning, then on heated dryer for the day. Airing cupboard overnight, put away next morning, and repeat.

kitcat23 · 19/01/2026 20:27

2 adults and a 4 year old. At least 5 loads a week

Youspurnme · 19/01/2026 20:29

When I lived by myself and was running/going to the gym 4-5 times a week, I probably did 6-7 washes a week. Gym stuff, sheets (1xweek) towels, gym kit, undies, blouses or whatever for work, tea towels, bath mats… I prefer to separate darks and whites, and to have clean fresh sheets and towels and clothes - not sure how to do less laundry tbh!

7238SM · 19/01/2026 20:29

1-2 loads a week- 9kg machine.

Just DH and myself, we both WFH, no uniforms, no gym wear
I use colour catchers so don't need to separate white/darks/colours

How big is your washing machine? I only have a 9kg and there’s no way I could do all the bedding in one load of all the towels?

herbaceous · 19/01/2026 20:32

I’m always astonished by laundry martyrdom. Three of us - three loads a week? One ought, one darks and a bonus wash of something. Towels go in with appropriate colour, but only get washed when actually need it.

Rituelec · 19/01/2026 20:34

Approx 5 loads.

More if it's rainy/muddy/illness

6 of us

Peass · 19/01/2026 20:34

It's just the 3 of us and it's 21 loads a week, at 9kg washing machine capacity. If i had the space for 2 washing machines and 2 dryers i would have got a second pair because it's relentless.

WanderlustMom · 19/01/2026 20:38

Just me & my 5 year old DS
Takes 2 loads to do all of the bedding
One load for towels, cloths etc
One load for school uniform
Then probably two separate loads then for other clothes, separated by whites / darks / colours
So I guess 6 loads a week

Due a baby girl anyday now so that’s definitely going to increase the washing 🙈

How do you generate such a lot? There are 2 adults here and I do 2 loads a week, maybe 4 if I’m changing a (super king) bed. The duvet covers seem enormous! My DH wears a uniform. I tend not to wash everything after one wear only, bar knickers, obviously.

familyissues12345 · 19/01/2026 20:39

3 of us (3 adults) and probably average a load a day. More when DS1 is back from uni

Kitchenbattle · 19/01/2026 20:44

Family of 4

2 loads per week…one dark and one light.

11kg machine.

I don’t do ALL bedding each week. I alternate.
it’s mostly towels, tea towels, uniform, T-shirts, underwear, pjs, sports gear, hoodies, a few jumpers from myself and dh.
We get about 2-3 wears out of a jumper. 3-4 out of a pair of jeans etc.

I wash everything at 40degrees and with biological powder.

my towels are a mid grey colour so they go in either wash load.
