How many full loads of laundry do you a week if you have a small household?

I feel like I’m constantly doing laundry! It’s just me and my 5 yo and I probably do a full load every second day. Or maybe that’s normal? I don’t know. I do go to the gym 4 times a week and always wash my gym clothes but I’ll wear regular clothes 3 or 4 times before I wash them. DD has clean tights & t shirt every day for school but the rest of her uniform she wears all week. I don’t know where it all comes from! How many loads of washing do you do (especially if you have a small household)?

3 of us here and at least 7-10 loads a week, depending on towels/ bedding/ sofa blankets (we’ve a dog so wash at least once a week).

Bufftailed · 19/01/2026 21:47

2 of us. 3 loads of clothes. Plus bed linen/ towels

Normally has to be washed on a 30 without softener - ruins the elasticity in the material especially gym leggings

That's how I wash clothes anyway. Can't stand softener.

Re PJs, surely they don't go next to your gennies, so don't need washing for hygiene purposes, like pants. I could live with a drop of food or tootpaste on them for another night! But then I don't wear PJs. Just a t shirt - which gets washed when it smells (!) - and pants.

Too much laundry is bad for the clothes, bad for the environment and a waste of energy, both human and electrical. IMHO.

MargolyesofBeelzebub · 19/01/2026 21:51

Per week

1x Dark
1x Light
1 or 2x Colours depending on amount of towels/bedding in the wash... I've been washing much more bedding lately thanks to DDog jumping on there with muddy paws, grr! (I do try to shut bedroom doors but sometimes I forget!)

Apart from naughty dog, it's just me & 4yo DD.

I don't separate towels and bedding - should I be?! 😳

mindutopia · 19/01/2026 21:53

I think that sounds about right. There’s 4 of us, but I only do washing for 3 (Dh is a big boy and is in charge of his own washing). I’d say I do 5 loads a week. Most days, but not absolutely every day.

Flicktick · 19/01/2026 21:53

Two adults and easily 7 loads a week, often more. 8k machine.
Bed changed weekly = 2 loads
Bathroom towels = 1load
Bath mats 1load
Downstairs towels /tea towels and cleaning clothes= 1load
Dark clothes 1 load
Light clothes 1 load
Delicate 1 load

maryberryslayers · 19/01/2026 22:00

I do about 3-4 loads per day, sometimes more. I have a 10kg but I don't overload.
My weekly loads are:

Darks x 2
Colours x 2
Lights x 2
Whites x 2
Bedding x 4 incl guest bed.
Towels/Bathmats x 2
Dark Delicates x 1
Light Delicates x1
Sports wear x 1
Dance Wear x 1
Swimming things x 1
Cleaning Cloths x 1
Waterproofs x 1
Handwash x 1

It's me, DH and 2 young DC who have lots of activities. I don't really wear clothes more than once apart from woollens and DC never do, clean uniforms daily. We all wear clean pyjamas each night and only use towels 2x max.

I mean. My son’s clothes are usually covered in food, mud and urine. So I can’t really make them wear him twice.

He also quite often gets poo all over his bed, can’t exactly avoid washing that either.

AuraBora · 19/01/2026 22:01

4 in the family - 2 adults, kids 8 and 4.
Do a load most days (think the washing machine capacity is 10kg) but not always full. Probably 6 per week on average.

Always chuck in towels with other stuff (clothes).

MildlyAnnoyed · 19/01/2026 22:04

There’s 3 of us. Me, DD 16 & DS 15. I do at least one full load per day. Sometimes two. It’s all feel I do.

Well, obviously. I mean the sort of washing of perfectly clean clothes and towels just because they've been worn or used once.

susiedaisy1912 · 19/01/2026 21:44

21kg machine?? I didn’t even know they existed that big.

I was thinking that!

It would be pointless in my house, I don't have enough clothes/ uniforms/ kit to wait that long to fill the machine!

great, but between uniforms, sports kits and sometimes a change of clothes and at least nightwear, my kids often wear (and dirty) at least 3 sets of clothes a day.

FancyCatSlave · 19/01/2026 22:20

Just DD and I. On a typical week that includes bedding I’d do:

3 loads clothes
1 load towels
1 load of cloths and tea towels and odds and ends
2 loads of bedding
1 load of pet blankets and throws

So 7 or 8.The bedding is alternate weeks and I generally do the pet blankets the other week.

DD (6) has a complete set of uniform daily as she is filthy. So there’s one load of her uniform, one load of her other clothes and nightwear,
one load of mine.

I don’t find it hard to manage though. It goes in the night before on a timer to come on early so it is finished for me to hang in the morning. It gets put away that evening. Then repeat. I never iron and don’t have piles.

Daisymay2 · 19/01/2026 22:41

Just me and DH now.
1 towel, flannels etc
1 bra/socks/tights/woollens
1 darks
1 lights, includes bedding.
Gym kit, ad hoc
Dusters etc often hand wash
Gardening and dirtier jobs gear washed separately when needed.

Yikes101 · 19/01/2026 23:01

There’s me and ds age 19. Probably 6 loads a week, lights, brights, darks, bedcovers (alternate whose bed), towels, ds work stuff.

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/01/2026 23:34

2 usually

whites bed sheets
darks towels

humptydumptyfelloff · 19/01/2026 23:41

Three humans and three dogs int he house
2x towel
loads a week

2 x bedding loads a week

1 x dogs bedding/blankets

3 x kitchen rugs (dogs) a week

1 x cushions covers/bathroom mats a week

3 x darks a week

1 x whites a week

so around 13 to 14 loads a week

it is relentless

15February1960 · 19/01/2026 23:45

Just me and every other day. I have clean everything on every day ( except coats) . Clean pjs every day.A clean towel every day.
I change my bedsheet twice a week and duvet cover once a week. .. then have tea towels and dish cloths and throws and cats bed.

Copperoliverbear · 19/01/2026 23:46

Three of us one or two washes a day

Copperoliverbear · 19/01/2026 23:47

Also extras like blankets or cushion covers ect on top.

plumpunnet · 19/01/2026 23:49

2 adults , probably average 4 loads

OSTMusTisNT · 19/01/2026 23:54

Just me and DH - 2 loads a week for normal clothes including DH work uniform. Occasionally a 3rd if we've been wearing things like hoodies in the winter that are bulkier. Either 30 degree or 40 degree depending on what the stuff is. Quite often don't have full load though and pad it out with one of my many dressing gowns!

Then another 2 loads for bedding as I don't think stuffing all the bedding in together cleans it that well - 2x 60 degree washes for bedding takes about 6 hours in my machine 😱.

purpleme12 · 20/01/2026 00:22

Every couple of days I put on a light wash and a dark wash. Sometimes I won't have time so it'll be every few days or whatever. It's just me and my child. But If I don't do it often then I won't be able to fit all the clothes into the radiators to dry will I. I need to do it often so they fit in the radiator, have time to dry then I can put the next lot out
