How many full loads of laundry do you a week if you have a small household?

I feel like I’m constantly doing laundry! It’s just me and my 5 yo and I probably do a full load every second day. Or maybe that’s normal? I don’t know. I do go to the gym 4 times a week and always wash my gym clothes but I’ll wear regular clothes 3 or 4 times before I wash them. DD has clean tights & t shirt every day for school but the rest of her uniform she wears all week. I don’t know where it all comes from! How many loads of washing do you do (especially if you have a small household)?

Just 2 adults was pretty much a full load everyday
I dont even count anymore with the kids 😂because I wash as we go when needed. If a day needs 3 or 4, I run 3 or 4, I never let laundry pile up.

I think it depends how big your machine is.
But if you do (on average, in reality you mix and match a bit more) a full load a week of:
1 load of beddings
1 load of towels
1 load of black
1 load of mix colour
1 load of white
2 loads of sport

that's 7 loads a week for 2 adults, so 1 a day.

3 adults I do,
bedding x2
towells, x1
darks x2
colours x1
whites x1
jumpers or dressing gown x1

Also, clean PJs every night? That is lunacy.

PJ’s are two nights in our house, but only if it’s a weeknight etc, and you’ve put them on late and taken them off first thing. If it’s the weekend and you lounge about in them/eat breakfast, then it’s one wear and wash.

Just the two of us adults. I do one load every 4 days. Everything goes in together.

And an extra one when I change the bed but I tumble dry that so it doesn’t need space on the clothes horse to dry.

hahagogomomo · 19/01/2026 21:12

2 people 4 loads 10kg machine

SleeplessInWherever · 19/01/2026 21:13

Three of us. Myself, my partner, our disabled 9 year old.

Our washer is on every day. Often twice.

Son’s bedding washed most days, he wears 2/3 outfits a day that all need washing. 2 sets of pyjamas a night. Then our normal adult clothes washing.

not any more lunacy than changing underwear every day? It's the same, one being worn at night, the other during the day!

Turmerictea · 19/01/2026 21:14

Two adults, one toddler. I do a load probably 6 times a week plus 1-2 whites and a bedding load. DH and I are sporty so lots of active wear!

bunnygrav3 · 19/01/2026 21:14

3 for one person, bedding and towels take a lot of room including mattress protector, pillow protectors and all the towels. And I dont like to overload. I could get it into 2 at a pinch

yeesh · 19/01/2026 21:16

3 adults, we do a wash everyday and sometimes an extra one.

Well, we have 2 king beds and 1 double weekly wash, 10 sets of uniforms, towels washed after 1 or 2 uses, everyday 2 showers, so thats new uniform, new house outfit then new PJ everyday, plus my clothes are big so it fills the washing machine more quickly than a a small child or petite woman. Then the blankets on the sofa get a weekly wash too. I often can only fit 1 or 2 blankets at a time.
We almost never rewear the same outfit again before washing except maybe a jumper or hoody might get 2 or 3 wears before washing. New PJ every night. It mounts up.

I don't wear pjs so clueless about that. Do they need washing after one wear? I think I'm a bit scruffy, I wear the same hoodie for 3 days straight if not at work. Towels are washed maybe once a week. I'm definitely living in filth! Blankets on the sofa are rarely washed, although were this week because one of the dogs had a UTI and accidentally shoved it on the floor where it landed in a puddle!

RedRiverShore6 · 19/01/2026 21:17

Just two adults, though DH has extra sportswear and outdoor stuff to wash, 4-5 loads a week

Poor dog I hope they're ok.
I just notice our clothes need a wash after 1 wear, some people might be neater and less sweaty..like I said iur drum is only 9kg so that doesn't help.
I don't judge people for wearing things more before a wash, everyone is different.

RamALamADingDong2 · 19/01/2026 21:25

Me, dh & 2 yo ds = 1 load every single bloomin' day! Neverending....

WednesdayAllTheWay · 19/01/2026 21:26

2-3 a week

SecretSquirrelLoo · 19/01/2026 21:26

Constantly. Endlessly.

Yes exactly, breakfast is cooked and eaten in them normally so they don't feel fresh for a second night.

TappyGilmore · 19/01/2026 21:30

Probably six loads per week in a household of one adult and one teen, although it does vary. Two loads of whites and two of darks, one of towels and one of bedding. We don’t even wear clean clothes every day (DC will get a couple of wears out of her school uniform and I work from home two days per week and will just throw anything on on those days).

SMM2020 · 19/01/2026 21:34

We were talking about this at work the other week and everyone thought I was mad 😅

3x bedding (we have a king size, multiple pillows, 5 year old has a double bed and 3 year old a single but they have blankets too that are washed weekly)
1x towels (always a 60 wash same with the bedding too)
6-7 loads for everything else - I go to the gym 4 times a week, partner twice a week then I’m in London two days a week and all that can’t be reworn, London is gross! Both kids have uniforms and I separate colours, whites and darks. Kids are also guaranteed to drop something down themselves.

Sometimes it’s more if I wash cushion covers, sofa blankets or protective bedding

Dahlia1234 · 19/01/2026 21:35

Just me and DH, generally 3 loads (or 2.5) a week.

momager1 · 19/01/2026 21:35

my machine is 21 kg. I do one full load of sheets (normally two sets) and shower towels a week. I do a full load of beach towels seperate as even when we shake them out, there is sand. Then I do clothes.. a dark wash and a whites/lights wash about every 10 days.

Peass · 19/01/2026 21:37

Okiedokie123 · 19/01/2026 21:06

@Peass Im fascinated - how do your clothes, pjs, blankets etc get so dirty every day that they need washing every day?

Well breakfast is cooked and eaten in PJ plus toothbrushing and inevitable toothpaste spills, I sometimes overheat at night as well. They just don't feel clean for a second night.
Outside clothes, they are worn for 6+ hours a day, on public transport, often ate or drank something in them, clothes don't feel fresh after a day out. Then at home, we shower and put a clean set, house clothes get pet allover them, pet goes out into muddy gardens etc. I cook and eat dinner in the house outfit so they smell of food or have a splash of food on them. Some people are neat, only eat once a day and don't sweat... for us we really need to launder often to not smell offensive.

Why can’t gym stuff just go in with everything else?

Normally has to be washed on a 30 without softener - ruins the elasticity in the material especially gym leggings

Pup is fine after antibiotics. He was puppy pee pants for ages as a bail. We knew who it was between the two!
