My friends seemed like they were freezing …

…. came round for a takeaway, heating on 20 when they arrived. They had layers on … removed some but soon put them back on. They stayed on even when I turned it up to 23 … I was boiling, sitting there in a shirt.

What takeaway did you have

shouldofgotamortage · 17/01/2026 21:25

maybe they are coming down with something?

cocopopps75 · 17/01/2026 21:27

Being cold is miserable. J would be cold at 20, and wouldn't warm up until 25

TheChosenTwo · 17/01/2026 21:27

I’m personally cold at 20° if I’m just sitting down.
Everyone is different, the rest of my household prefer rooms at 20 but I’m more comfortable at 24 just sitting. If I’m busy in the house 20/21 is okay.
I wear thermals underneath my clothes and never take off layers 🤣

Evaporateandlisten · 17/01/2026 21:28

Did you ask them?

MildlyAnnoyed · 17/01/2026 21:32

The most my house ever gets to with the heating on is 19 & I think it’s reasonable. I couldn’t sit in a t-shirt but it’s not uncomfortable at that temperature.

FunkyMonks · 17/01/2026 21:36

At the moment I’m having hot flushes so my heating is constantly going up and down 😂😂 but most it goes up to is 23 if I’m feeling cold if I’m melting it goes down to 18 our house isn’t cold though back of house is the hottest from sun and many windows and doors makes it feel like you are in a gold fish bowl cooking.

Rhubarbandgooseburycrumble · 17/01/2026 21:38

My house is freezing whenever I go to anyone there’s house I am boiling!
My friends freeze in my house, I tell them to later up 😂

Doggymummar · 17/01/2026 21:39

My heating is o. 22, I'm undef an electric blanket in fleecy jimjams and furry slippers. Partner had fleecy jjmjams and two oodies on. We are all different

GoodBrew · 17/01/2026 21:40

21/22c here at least. Can't stand anything lower, I would definitely keep my coat on in your house.

ThroughTheRedDoor · 17/01/2026 21:40

If I have a room full of guests then I find 18 - 20 is just nice.

Do you have a big open plan space?

shhblackbag · 17/01/2026 21:40

What's the problem with it? Presumably, you want your guests to be comfortable? I have a friend whose house is cold even with the heating on. I wear layers when I'm there. If I thought she found that rude, I wouldn't visit. I hate being cold.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 17/01/2026 21:42

The problem is, while you can add extra layers, drink hot drinks, us a throw etc if you are cold, there’s not much you can do if you’re overly warm!

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 17/01/2026 21:42

Do you carry more body fat than them? I lost a lot of weight a few years ago and now I feel the cold much more than I used to. A friend of mine who is currently on Ozempic (and looking incredible) says the same thing. When we go out together we are bundled up like Inuit.

WonderfulSmith · 17/01/2026 21:42

It’s 20 in my living room right now. DH is sat there in a T-shirt, I’m wearing a thin jumper. But then we both grew up in houses without central heating.

Egglio · 17/01/2026 21:47

If they aren't paying the heating bill, they can put another layer on.

shhblackbag · 17/01/2026 21:48

Sure. But OP seems annoyed they kept layers on. That's unreasonable to me.

MySweetGeorgina · 17/01/2026 21:52

We keep a cold house , apparently

I find above 17 stifling 😬 Grew up in a cold country and used to wear wool layers and keep active to stop the blood pooling (is that even a thing 😁) and keep circulation up

But if we have guests I crank the heating up to 20-25 and just wear a t shirt and sit there sweating… trying to be a good host

privately I do not understand why people dress so badly for winter (no layers, no wool) and move so little

i have noticed skinny people and older people feel the cold most, so for them my heating goes on max capacity plus a few electric plug in ones too if needed

Don’t let your guests be cold OP 🥶 being cold is miserable

canuckup · 17/01/2026 21:53

Lol at the first question

Sidebeforeself · 17/01/2026 21:57

Layers dont heat your fingers, nose face, hands etc. If you noticed you should have asked them .

Also although you turned the heating up,once someone is cold it may take a while to thaw out.

Is this a stealth boast about how you can take the cold?

ChurchWindows · 17/01/2026 21:58

I like it cool in my house so it's never about 19 but if guests are coming round I wang it right up. Most people like it warmer than I do and I know if I'm dashing around hosting and cooking I'll be warm but they might just be sitting still freezing their tits off.

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 17/01/2026 22:01

They would be baltic in my house then. Only have the heating on 18 degrees 😂

Seriously though; 20 degrees is generally shorts and t-shirt weather outside right?! It’s a bit odd they were so cold unless they are sickening for something

DontKillSteve · 17/01/2026 22:09

We gave a cold house and I grew up in cold houses with no central heating or double glazing. I’m always sweating in other peoples houses and I’m not overweight BMI 21.

If I get to particularly cold it’s hard to heat up so I can understand still keeping layers on at 23. When I’m cold it can take a warm bath to heat me through.
If I remain at a comfortable temperature (20 ish) then I am fine.

HeddaGarbled · 17/01/2026 22:21

Just because a bit of technology claims that somewhere in your house is a certain temperature, doesn’t mean that’s what it feels like everywhere in the house. In my living room, there are warm places (my seat, next to the radiator, away from the door) and not so warm places (DH’s seat, further away from the radiator, in a draft from the door to the hall). Rooms at the front of the house are warmer than the rooms at the back, whatever the thermostat pretends.
