How far are you comfortably flying on a weeks holiday.

For a week I'd be happy flying to Spain, Italy, Malta and at a push the canaries.
DH wants to go further away but doesn't know where.
Surely less than 5 hours is ok but anything longer will cut out the first and last day.

Can you stretch the further destination holiday to 10 days? If not, I agree with you, there will realistically only be five days in the place together with jetlag presumably. I'm with you but even the Canaries is too far for me now unless it's for ten days or more!

FortyFacedFuckers · 13/01/2026 19:47

I am currently in the canaries for a week but that’s really the furthest I would go for a week, ideally I would prefer to go somewhere closer but over the winter it’s the closest place for decent weather but if I was going over the summer for a week I would definitely stick to something shorter

ultracynic · 13/01/2026 19:48

We went to Mexico for a week and had a lovely time but honestly I wouldn’t go that far again for a short break. Was about 7 or 8 hours flight I think, my limit now would be 4 hours max.

DH wants to go Cape Verde.
The time we can go has to be for a week. May.
It's for a celebration between us.
We do have another holiday in September for 12 nights.

Cape Verde isn’t too bad, or how about Madeira? Quite a challenging landing strip mind you!

CalmShaker · 13/01/2026 19:51

I have a neighbor who went to Australia for the weekend, left on the Thursday came back on the Monday which I found extreme

Captainj1 · 13/01/2026 19:51

I’m more bothered about timezone changes than the flight length. Flight to South Africa no problem. Cape Verde no problem. Wouldn’t do Japan or Australia or west coast US for a week’s holiday, although I’ve done a number of trips to Asia for a single business meeting/dinner in the past which is brutal

Ohpleeeease · 13/01/2026 19:53

How about a transatlantic sail to New York on Cunard Queen Mary 2 (takes a week) then fly straight back? You can do it the other way round too of course.

Captainj1 · 13/01/2026 19:54

Btw I’ve done Cape Verde for a week with the DH and two DC. Was absolutely fine as no or very little time change and the hotel was a 5 minute drive from the airport. The plane was a bit rubbish but that’s because the runways are short so you can’t land bigger aircraft there. It’s basically 2 films.

JDM625 · 13/01/2026 19:54

The fight time wouldn't bother me as much as the time zone difference. Depending how well you cope with jet lag could be a factor. Google suggests that for every hour difference, it takes 1, entire day to reset. I do long haul 13hr time zone difference often, but have never take 2 weeks to acclimatise to it.

If the fight times suit and you could max out the days you are there, then yes, I'd definitely go!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 13/01/2026 19:57

The furthest I've been for a week is Boston, that was fine.

Lamelie · 13/01/2026 19:59

I’d factor in time difference too. Which is only one hour for Cape Verde.

HeddaGarbled · 13/01/2026 20:01

Comfortably, I can manage a little over 2 hours. Spain, Balearics, Italy, lovely.

I am going to do 4-5 this year because H wants to go to Cyprus, but I’ve booked aisle seats and still not looking forward to it.

Now if he’d fork out for better than economy seats, that’s a whole different ball game.

MadamCholetsbonnet · 13/01/2026 20:01

I would do about nine hours

SheilaFentiman · 13/01/2026 20:03

I would do New York but not San Francisco.

but a smaller time difference is preferred!

ZenNudist · 13/01/2026 20:04

I did 9 days in california last year and 8 days in New York and Boston the year before. I could easily do a week but I just like the stretch the holiday time if I can.

I’m off to Cape Verde for 4 nights in Feb! Seems to be the closest place with a decent temperature. Would have like to stay longer but family logistics didn’t allow for it. I’m grateful for anytime though - sunshine in February, can’t wait!

elm26 · 13/01/2026 20:07

Anything 6 hours+ is a 11-14 day holiday. I wouldn’t do aus without having 3-4 weeks.

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 13/01/2026 20:07

In the past for a week I’ve been as far as Hong Kong and regularly to the east coast US and Caribbean probably 10-20 times I’ve also done long weekend city breaks to the US.
I’m older now with more time so tend to go for longer but if you offered me a week in Barbados I’d take it without question

ForPinkDuck · 13/01/2026 20:08

5 hours. Why Cape Verde?

Makingadecision · 13/01/2026 20:08

I’ve done New York for 6 days. It was fine. I regularly do the canaries for short breaks.

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 13/01/2026 20:09

We used to go to Cairo and Luxor a lot for a week….between 4 3/4 and 5 1/2 hour flights and it felt very doable …. Have a lovely time wherever you go xx

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 13/01/2026 20:09

I did Barbados for a week once. I did have 7 full days there though.

5 hours maximum for me, although I prefer less!
2-3 hours is perfect, earliest flight time I can get on the way there and an afternoon flight back so we can get DC home to bed at a proper time and get back on track ☺️
