Hello!

New thread for when we are ready.

Happy New Year, Happy New Thread

Whether you want to do one extra thing a day while the kettle boils or a list helps with a kick up the bum to Get Things Done - all welcome.

That sounds horrible @Mumtobabyhavoc and @mumofoneAloneandwell. Our solution to the potential mouse in the car is to sell the car….. Well it’s going as part exchange towards the new car we are buying. We were doing it anyway. It’s going to a main dealer so they will service and MOT it before they sell it on.

crivit · 23/01/2026 16:53

@WinterFrogs Well, I am injured but I cannot blame the new bicycle brakes... Accident at work, over-exuberant teaching methods = slipping and somehow managing to twist and land on my own foot. Congratulations to me on a few weeks wearing a mahoosive boot and using crutches before yet more physio slaps forehead

Because of this my jobs around the house are taking a hit but one of the alternatives caused another problem today. I was picking something up off the floor (balancing using a crutch) so it didn't mess up the robot vacuum when I fell forward and smacked my head on a big old iron radiator. Should I just go to bed or will wrapping myself in bubble wrap be enough?

I may add reading some Agatha Christie to my to do list along with crafting. I await the next injuries of paper cuts and stabbing myself with crochet hooks and knitting and sewing needles 🤣

Baital · 23/01/2026 18:00

@crivit I am all in favour of reading being on the to do list. Preferably at the top 😀

RunningKatie · 23/01/2026 18:06

Ah Duolingo, yep, I deleted it at new year after it just became another chore to keep my streak up. It was pushing everyone towards the paid model which annoyed me as I'd been trying to encourage the dc on it.
Anyway, we also use Finch as more of a self-care app, I like ticking off that I got up!
I've gone back to work today, thank heavens it's the weekend so I can relax a bit more. The germs have mostly gone, I'm not completely wiped out making a mug of tea now.
I need to get back to my lists but for now I've got my feet up and having a little power nap before WinterWatch.

SunnyViper · 23/01/2026 19:22

@WinterFrogs I use capsules in the drum. It wasn’t a problem before the move. It may be that the machine sat unused for longer than usual so built up mould that I just can’t shift.

@WideOpenBeaches I struggle with procrastinating over house jobs. We moved in over summer and there are a million things that need to be done. I keep distracting myself by gardening 😂.

I’ve spent most of today learning music for a choir rehearsal tomorrow. We should be off copy in the morning but I’ve only just started looking at it today🙄. I’ll listen to it in bed and hope it goes in subliminally 😂

WinterFrogs · 23/01/2026 19:24

I got @petalpower and @Peridot1 muddled up sorry ( both much esteemed though!)
Loved hearing about your cleaner @SpringingIntoSummerLobelia 💕

A no to dualingo then. Noted! I need to get back on my typing course. I am so much quicker typing on my phone that I quite often write emails on my phone's notepad then c&p to my laptop which has a better signature for work. It's not really quick enough though.

Glad you're on the mend @RunningKatie 😁

I do like this thread. You are all so very human! I grew up being led to believe that napping, watching tv and even reading during the day was the height of decadence. And as for nibbling between meals - well!!

The anxiety settled as jobs were ticked off today. And I've turned off notifications on my phone because even the message icons were causing an adrenaline dump. These things really take a hold don't they?

Bubbly bath time and book for me. Just attempted a watch of the film of the Agatha Christie that I'm reading and it was all kinds of wrong ( except the wonderful Jenny Seagrove) Aggie's writing is beautiful and fluid with a lot of depth (imo) and the film seemed to be a mockery of that. Hark at me 🤣
I am really looking forward to a day of not too many people tomorrow. And bedtime tonight as I have changed all the bedding.

Love you all! Night night 🌙 😴

WideOpenBeaches · 23/01/2026 20:18

I take it you’re not a Traitors fan @WinterFrogs ! It’s the finale tonight so I’m on the sofa with the OH ready to go…

I achieved more today than I thought. Sorted out last minute stuff with accountants who’d flagged up DS had not submitted anything to them for his tax return He’s abroad but old enough to do this himself. I’m going to show tough love going forward and leave him in the lurch if he can’t be bothered.

Cooked cranberry and oranges together ready for a fool tomorrow, prepped the mixture for the shortbread to go with it and left it in the fridge. Delivered 31 parish magazines- along with 29 knocks on doors demanding this years subs.

Actually did some filing.

Filing papers is my absolute nemesis. Hate it. Haven’t tackled it for about 3 months. Managed about an hour.

My NY resolution is to read more.
Does it mean I can put it on my To Do List? 😁

Baital · 23/01/2026 20:44

Reading more should be on every NY resolution and to do.list.

I get unreasonably (or maybe not) annoyed by Agatha Christie adaptations that basically invent a new plot or fundamentally change characters. Kenneth Braghnah's Poirot having a shoot out on a snowy bridge - WTAF? The whole point of Poirot was that he was the antidote to the action hero detective, he was fussy and unathletic, and didn't run round finding 'clues'. He sat (often at home) and thought.

Like the recent Famous Five / Swallow and Amazons adaptations. If you don't want the plot and characters, just write a new story.

And breathe...

Baital · 23/01/2026 20:45

In fact, Poirot's preference for sitting peacefully at home and thinking should be an example to.us all.

If only we had his staff to deal with all the daily 'stuff' as well...

Mumtobabyhavoc · 23/01/2026 21:49

Noting all the language learning enthusiasts here! May I suggest checking podcasts? I play language learning podcasts in the car for the dc - and me! - and it's great! 🤓

I am 100% agree. What on EARTH was that Brannagh version of A Haunting in Venice? DH has quite a bit to say about the Lord of the rings adaptations as well. It just serves to annoy the true lovers of the books. I would add the netflix version of Thursday Murder Club. Too many changes that took away from the original gentle charm of the book.

I enjoyed the film adaptation of Swallows and Amazons- as long as it was treated as a separate film only. The fact it tried to be an adaptation of S&A irritated me deeply.

I have strong opinions on this stuff! (Actually- a slight segue.... everyone is telling me what a great film Hamnet is... perhaps. But that's another bugbear- modern writers 'taking inspiration' and essentially riding off the coat tails of classics. Write your own story!).

I could go on but will spare you all..... Grin

Today I am not tidying so much, just hoping to put things away.... not put them down. I have already had an early trip to Aldi. Dinner tonight will be a bit of a hodge podge based on the red reduced stickers at Aldi. So, I am making a sweet potato, courgette and asparagus frittata with trout poached in lemon and white wine. The DCs might get through the trout but I will serve theirs with a fried rice.

Otherwise it is a quiet day. Tomorrow we are going to see the film Marty Supreme (finally)** and pizza hut.

** i have just realised the possible hypocrisy of being sniffy about book and film adaptations of famous works and being willing to go and see film adaptations of someone's actual life. Grin

petalpower · 24/01/2026 09:11

@WideOpenBeaches you were asking about procrastination and jobs taking up headspace? I’m a great user of lists to get stuff out of my head. With bigger jobs i try to break them down into chunks and plan that over a few days so with your painting I would:

  1. choose the paint colour and buy a tester pot
  2. try out the tester
  3. buy the paint
  4. clear bathroom and do prep work
  5. first coat
  6. second coat
  7. woodwork
You’re probably doing all of that and I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know!
WideOpenBeaches · 24/01/2026 09:32

@petalpower I've got to stage 3
I sit on the loo and look at the paint pot and beat myself up 😆
Time for action very soon…

Peridot1 · 24/01/2026 09:59

Morning all. Looking out at blue skies and some sunshine here for a change which is so nice. It seems to have been grey and wet for ages.

I hear you all on adaptations of books and liberties taken with the actual story. Drives me mad.

@crivit - I think you should wrap up in bubble wrap and lie on a low sofa reading.

Yesterday some nice removals guys came and moved the cross trainer from the garage to the gym. It took them a couple of minutes. Although they said it was very heavy. Will move other bits and pieces in today and order some mats and picture frames for some posters I have plus a small shoe rack and some shelves and some hand weights. I have to use it at least twice a week or it’s being turned into a bar apparently…..

Went and looked at some fabric samples for curtains and blinds. Took home the ones I liked. They look very different in the light here compared to the showroom. So back to the drawing board a bit I think.

I also changed my bed so need to wash the bedding today. Other jobs today will be usual kitchen/dishwasher, tidy the utility room before it gets too messy and sort out a couple of drawers in my bedroom. And start a couple of charity bags/piles.

Have a great day all.

WinterFrogs · 24/01/2026 11:59

I think I am not of this world @WideOpenBeaches . I don't even know what Traitors is ( reality tv?) I muddled it up with Hunted the other day when talking to someone. Even as a child I'd be reading while my family watched tv. A bit like Lucy Mangan of Bookworm @Peridot1 We lived in a big enough house that I could be in the same room but well away from them. Very rural in those days.
For language learning I use the Paul Noble cd and book system though that's gone the same way as my typing recently. If podcasts had been around when my children were small I'd have done the same as you @Mumtobabyhavoc I think.

See there is our wonderful @petalpower being one of the shining examples I meant @WideOpenBeaches 💕 Excellent list!

@Baital I thoroughly agree with putting reading on a to do list and it's a new year resolution to do much more of it! I am pleased not to be the only one irritated by book adaptations. The only ones I have ever liked were the Harry Potter films. I was astonished at how they matched the picture in my head.

@SpringingIntoSummerLobelia you amused me with your thought process regarding the film adaptation of someone's life.

I haven't read the Thursday Murder Club but I have seen the adaptation and really enjoyed it. Probably because I hadn't read it though. Several of my favourite actors all in one place. I might give his books a go.

Lovely sunshine here too. I have been out in it, and now I am back in my bed with a cup of tea while DH is downstairs watching golf. Not leaving until I have finished my Aggie! I am feeling quite rebellious. This afternoon I intend to put on a walking exercise class on youtube. I might even join in! Current favourite is one set to Abba music and the woman leading it doesn't speak. Just does, while we follow.

Oh @crivit 😔 I am so sorry to hear about your injuries. I hope you recover quickly. I also vote bubble wrap and a book 🫂

No project today I don't think. Just follow @SpringingIntoSummerLobelia 's lead and put things away as I go.
Really quite weary today but I'm my own worst enemy with things I take on.

Best wishes to all 😘

FurForksSake · 24/01/2026 12:35

Good afternoon all!

I have just cleaned out the fridge, I’m that person who probably doesn’t do it often enough.

DH is in the garage moving things around and sorting. My ceramics kiln is arriving from Europe in the next few weeks so it’s all about which area is my studio and which is garage.

Once it’s moved around I’ll need to buy some storage and a big mirror and some other bits.

Peridot1 · 24/01/2026 12:35

@WinterFrogs - yes I suppose The Traitors is reality TV. We love it. Were glued to it last night. I’m not a huge fan of reality TV but love the Traitors. (And Married at First Sight Australia but we will gloss over that admission! 😜. It’s my dirty little secret. 🤫)

Just sorted out a chest of drawers in my bedroom. I had 7 long sleeved tops in either blue or black and white stripes……… The drawer closes now!

WinterFrogs · 24/01/2026 16:32

Good on you for doing your fridge @FurForksSake and exciting times ahead with your kiln!
We had a pottery room at school and I showed very little talent then, but there are a couple of places near here that do classes and just pottery painting - might put it in my list of different things to do.

@Peridot1 we all have our little secrets! Our most recent binge watch was the Harlan Corben one which had dreadful reviews, at least on MN but I suspended disbelief and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Aggie is finished and was nicely satisfying. I have been on the read what you own thread but I am breaking rules all over the place, and downloaded a book that was mentioned on the very same thread 🤦‍♀️ So I started that ( nice and easy read, just what's wanted at mo)

Did a few (10?) mins on the mama mia exercise video and clocked up just over a thousand energetic steps to add to quite a lot outside earlier, and it's banished the headache I was brewing and kickstarted some motivation for a paperwork sort out.

And I have cleaned the bath and put some laundry away. Dinner is leftovers as always on a Saturday, it's the most day offest day of the week 😁

Mumtobabyhavoc · 24/01/2026 18:09

Lots to comment on - adaptations, pottery, list ideas, loo sitting ... 😁

And Winter, "but I am breaking rules all over the place"
I figured you were a rebel! 😁

My day: 6:08am Sound asleep, heard a thud.
Baby had rolled off the bed landing on face.
Lip swollen, nose bloody so packed bag and did a quick trip to emerg. After checking in, triage and a move to waiting area noticed swelling on forehead. Lovely nurse from triage stopped by on her way home to move us to another area and nudged to colleague notice dc. Soon after went in to doctor. Examined and given the all-clear.
Home by 8:30am.

Made chocolate pancakes with maple syrup and mixed berries on the side. Have got iced latte #2 going. 🥱

Large load of laundry has just finished, so will hang that up.

Had a late night as took dc to observatory at SFU. Line was too long to wait to go in for the big telescope, but did look through smaller telescopes at moon and Orion Nebula. Both stunning. Moon was very close and low in the western sky last night. It was a bottom crescent and looked like a lunar eclipse, actually.

Temp has gone up from -4c to -2c. It is sunny.

Oh poor Baby @Mumtobabyhavoc 😔 That must have hurt! Glad to hear no harm done. What a worry for you ❤️ Impressed by the speed with which Baby got seen to though.

What did the chidren make of the observatory? Do the pictures show what the telescope sees compared to the naked eye?

WideOpenBeaches · 25/01/2026 08:40

Holey Moley @Mumtobabyhavoc !
Poor you and poor Havoc too.

Glad you’re both ok.

I know very little about the moon and stars. They must look amazing

BerfyTigot · 25/01/2026 09:15

Yesterday I framed 2 cards which i really like and have been meaning to do for ages.

This week I'm going to be making marmalade 😍.

WinterFrogs · 25/01/2026 09:23

Good projecting @Baital !

Peridot1 · 25/01/2026 11:19

Ouch - poor Baby @Mumtobabyhavoc! Glad they are ok. And very impressed at how fast they were seen at the hospital.

@WinterFrogs - rules are made to be broken. We started watching that Harlen Coben but got distracted by the Traitors so will hopefully get back to it.

@BerfyTigot - I’m looking for something to put on the wall in the kitchen in a small awkward space - framed cards would be perfect. I shall start hunting. Thanks for the inspiration!

I am planning a bit of a lazy day today. Laundry as always. Second load is on. Dishwasher is done. I might sort a few more drawers in my bedroom. And I want to build the exercise bench that is going into the gym and get it moved in. And then I am going to read my book. I’ve slowed down again with too much doom scrolling.

Roast lamb for dinner.
