Hanging out laundry - today!

BiggyJ · 05/01/2026 09:34

We all know MN loves a let's hang out the laundry outside thread, but would you do it today?
I'm working my way through all the bedlinen so there will be a few loads of laundry hanging about...

Currently bright blue skies and sunshine but here it is -3° with a feels like -7° factor.
Is there any point?
What's the scientific take on this oh wise ones?

Not if its -3 it will freeze. I did this once with jeans, they were frozen solid. 😂

Samewrinklesnewname · 05/01/2026 09:41

Similar temperature here, and I’m waiting for a load to finish so I can hang it out!

TheDandyLion · 05/01/2026 09:41

Anything 100% wool I would. Freezing weather is the best thing for it.

DarkEyedSailor · 05/01/2026 09:42

I do! It freezes but it dries.

Raisondeetre · 05/01/2026 09:42

It just wouldn’t dry though surely?

MildlyAnnoyed · 05/01/2026 09:43

My nan always used to say if the sun would dry the paving stones, it’ll dry your washing. I thought that was good advice! The paving stones definitely won’t dry today!

Nincompoo · 05/01/2026 09:43

It’ll just freeze solid, surely, and will still be as wet when it thaws out in 3 days?

My washing is on a cloths horse inside if I don’t want to put it in the tumble dryer.

BiggyJ · 05/01/2026 09:44

@MildlyAnnoyed My paving stones are covered in snow... 😂

Common sense says no.

Somersetbaker · 05/01/2026 09:55

Depends how windy it is. Very light wind, or no wind I wouldn't bother, if there's a good blow going it's worth a try. In reality, unless I was desperate, I would have checked the forecast, before starting the wash, if it didn't look favourable, I'd leave it to another day.

IncessantNameChanger · 05/01/2026 10:00

Weirdly my washing has been out every day this week and felt dry after 30 minutes of hanging up inside. AI says it will dry today as well as its sunny and there is a breeze ( I don't notice any breeze!) So in the interests of science I'm going to try.

BiggyJ · 05/01/2026 10:17

I'm going to hang out the single layer items - ie. the bedsheets.
In the name of science 😉
There's not a wisp of a breeze here either @IncessantNameChanger

I used to hang my towels out wh n it was very cold. It makes them lovely and soft when they warm up again.

Ginmonkeyagain · 05/01/2026 10:27

I have washing outside right now - cold dry and very sunny here in London.

WinterAconite · 05/01/2026 10:31

I remember my parents bringing in washing that was stiff as a board. I only really hang out about April -September though and let the heating dry it indoors the rest of the time.

TheSandgroper · 05/01/2026 10:33

I would be putting quilts and pillows out. Killing a few dust mites whenever I can is always something I try to do (but it’s hot here).

mikado1 · 05/01/2026 10:34

I've hung mine out the last three days and has been dry by following morning (having been brought back in lol) which is quicker than usual for me compared to inside drying. So I'll continue. I just stuck the clothes horse outside this morning. Sunny back to the house and a lovely crisp but freezing day.

ohmysense · 05/01/2026 10:37

In northern countries where it’s routinely below zero weather in winter people still hang their washing to dry outside throughout the winter. It may freeze at first and then the water will still evaporate and it will dry.

Oldandgreyer · 05/01/2026 10:45

The sun here is boiling off the damp from the roof opposite.

Biscuits4 · 05/01/2026 10:51

If it's above freezing and in sun or a slight breeze, then I would.

Lifesyoungdream · 05/01/2026 10:55

I have been hanging my washing out all week. It has been cold but the sun was shining and a slight breeze at times. When I bring it in and hang it up in the utility room it is damp half an hour later when I felt it was bone dry.

Wetcoatsandmudagain · 05/01/2026 10:55

Definitely hang it out! I have done all week. Get it in before 2pm and temp drops again. Dries surprisingly quick

Stirrupcup · 05/01/2026 10:55

I would if we got enough sun where the line is in the winter months but we're surrounded by woodland and the selfish sun doesn't rise high enough in winter. Tumble Dryer from October it is!

Vound · 05/01/2026 10:58

You lot are hardcore! Our decking is like an ice sheet, I'm going nowhere near it.
