Hanging out laundry - today!

BiggyJ · 05/01/2026 09:34

We all know MN loves a let's hang out the laundry outside thread, but would you do it today?
I'm working my way through all the bedlinen so there will be a few loads of laundry hanging about...

Currently bright blue skies and sunshine but here it is -3° with a feels like -7° factor.
Is there any point?
What's the scientific take on this oh wise ones?

I put cotton bedding out at 10,30 amd it’s almost dry! That said the previous owner of my house must have been a woman after my own heart as there are extra poles perfectly placed to catch the sun in the winter!

BiggyJ · 05/01/2026 13:17

Great news @Samewrinklesnewname 👏
Same for me, I hung out the first load of bedsheets at 10 and I've just come home and they're dry! Cold, but definitely dry.
Will air them in the utility before going into the linen closet.

Brushed cotton bedding dried in the midlands yesterday and towels today.

Dollymylove · 05/01/2026 13:32

My neighbours hang their washing out all year. Surprised hey havent got it out today actually!!
No point hanging it out on a drab damp November/December day, it wont dry

mamakoukla · 05/01/2026 13:35

Freezing weather and sunny - it will dry. I’d leave it out for the whole day. It may feel frozen when you bring it in, but allow it to warm up and it should be good. Softens the fibres beautifully especially sheets and towels.

IncessantNameChanger · 05/01/2026 16:40

I can confirm that it reached 1 degree max, snow on the ground all day and my washing was dry when I got it in at 3.30. It felt extremely cold but after hanging it up for 30 minutes it was room temp and dry. It feels wet because it's cold, but it wasn't wet. Smells amazing too.

I think the trick is to put it out early and get it in before it starts to get dark. I wouldn't want to put two loads out at a time as it needs space to warm up ( eg on a curtain rail - everything that can be put on a hanger I hang up) or spaced out the drying rack. Getting it to room temp after bringing it in I think helped.

chattyness · 05/01/2026 16:45

I would because if the ground is dry you'll get it partly dry if not fully.
It's been snowing here for two days so no hanging laundry out for me unfortunately.

bitterexwife · 05/01/2026 16:48

I hung a small load out on the balcony in French alps earlier this week. A few hours later finished off in hotel room. Weren’t dry from being outside, but mostly.

I would if we got enough sun where the line is in the winter months but we're surrounded by woodland and the selfish sun doesn't rise high enough in winter. Tumble Dryer from October it is!

Washing doesn't dry in my shaded garden, but my neighbours opposite hang theirs on sunny day in their *not shaded south facing garden and it dries quite well apparently. Mine goes in the dryer all winter long. So it depends on sunshine and wind, I think

OnlyHasEyesForLoki · 05/01/2026 17:06

I have the holy grail that is two long lines under my car port so light rain is no bother but -3 it would all freeze and then thaw wet again and unless you had a good dry wind would probably smell a bit musty

Occasionalcyclist · 05/01/2026 17:06

I hang my washing out all year round if the weather's dry and breezy. Would have done so today but I'd run out of washing after doing loads at the weekend when there was more of a breeze! Freezing cold dry weather is great for drying sheets and towels as others have said.

itsthetea · 05/01/2026 17:07

I don’t want to bring in solid washing to defrost indoors

Lennonjingles · 05/01/2026 17:12

It was lovely and sunny in our garden this morning, I put some towels and sheets out for a couple of hours, whilst we were out walking. It took off most of the moisture, finished off drying indoors. I can’t be bothered with small items, but for larger items, I will always put washing out. My neighbour is a goddess in housekeeping, if she has her washing out, so do I.

Lauralou19 · 05/01/2026 17:13

Ours went out before 8 with the garden covered in frost. Got it in at 3 and almost completely dry. Will air and put away later. Underwear 5 mins in the tumble dryer.

If its not raining, ours goes out and pretty much only use the tumble dryer to finish things off or if its a solid rainy day.

Its so dry where we live (frosty but you can feel the air is so dry) so washing still dries so well.

Exactly what we do - it was -2 when I hung it out this morning, washing on at 6am, out before 8 and in at 3 (I work school hours so doable). Almost completely dry. Not going to waste money on tumble drying when outside is free, smells lovely and doesn’t wreck/shrink our clothes.

RudolphTheReindeer · 05/01/2026 17:28

I wouldn't as we get virtually no sun in the garden in winter so need a nice breeze or very dry day. I would if we had sun.

Noodles1234 · 05/01/2026 17:31

I with mine as long as it is in sunshine (even when zero), it dries. Can be a little chilly so an hour on the radiator and it’s done. If no sun / breeze it’s the dryer.

JohnTheRevelator · 05/01/2026 17:34

It will freeze! I always remember my DM putting pairs of jeans out on the line in sub-zero temperatures. When she brought them indoors, they could stand up on their own. 😂

muddyford · 05/01/2026 17:38

Mine all dried except a pair of jeans. -4 here, but good breeze and lowish humidity.

Sidebeforeself · 05/01/2026 17:42

Even if not dry completely its worth doing for that amazing smell

You lot are hardcore! Our decking is like an ice sheet, I'm going nowhere near it.

Don’t blame you. I stepped onto our decking on New Year’s Day and ended up flat on my back. It wasn’t even icy just wet

Deadringer · 05/01/2026 17:49

I hang washing out all year round but the last couple of days I have used the drier. I dont get any sun in my back garden at this time of year and the ground is wet so zero chance of it drying outside.

Charlize43 · 05/01/2026 17:53

I only hang laundry outside if it is 10 degrees or over. I read that on a Cuprinol garden shades paint can - not to use in temperatures of less than 10 degrees and I assumed it was because it wouldn't dry.

Yes I'm not sure the jeans would dry, but the bath sheet towel did. My mind is blown. I have hung out washing every day this week and it's come in dry.

StarlightLady · 05/01/2026 20:07

If l’d mine out today, and l am a great fan of line drying, l would have to replace the fabric conditioner with de-icer!
