It’s boring but - shoe storage?

Our hall is a mess. We have some wicker baskets but I would love some shoe storage. Ideally a cupboard with shelves? Not the fold out shoe boxes I have seen in Ikea.

Does anyone mind sharing what they have?

We are a family of 5. I insist only daily shoes r downstairs so school shoes and trainers for the kids. Footy boots / special occasions shoes in wardrobes.
We have two bookcases. I found shoe storage wasn't great for size 10 feet.
Our stairs go up then turn then turn again so on the first turn we have the bookcases.
Baskets on top of bookcase for hats gloves etc

I’m thinking something like the attached for my very narrow hallway.

We've got 2 big chest of drawers in the hall, plus 3 racks. Then I have more upstairs. Its hard with OH as he has really big walking and work boots which dont fit on anything, then we have nice shoes, smart shoes, holiday shoes, walking shoes, work shoes, summer shoes, winter shoes, the list is endless

We’re a 4 person household and have 2 of these side by side in the porch, spendy but I wanted a finish that matched the internal door and style. Painful seeing them 20% off when we payed full whack 😭

They house 6 x pairs each and a few underneath as well. We keep daily rotation here (wellies, school shoes, trainers, hiking boots, work boots) and then occasional wear shoes in individual cupboards upstairs. Rotate out for summer footwear when the seasons change

FruityFrog · 04/01/2026 20:34

We bought all the shoe cupboards in the world and they just kept breaking. Then we got this and it's perfect.

We live in a fairly large home , but with an annoyingly narrow hallway and the wider part of the hallway has a radiator so can’t put shoes storage there .
We tend to remove shoes in the tiny front hallway /porch and leave them there on the floor since we immediately put slippers on ( we are a shoes off household) our other frequently worn shoes are on racks inside a large under stairs cupboard but that’s accessible from the kitchen / dining room/ family area so not ideal .
Wellies and any snow boots are on a rack at the interior garage door .
We were all in Japan for a while and I miss their built in cupboard by the front door that had space for you to remove and store shoes and slippers

StatisticallyChallenged · 04/01/2026 21:42

We just have billy bookcases, with each pair stacked (bottom shoe right way up with toe facing in, top shoe upside down with toe facing out). Shelves are at a range of heights to accomodate different shoes, so there's taller ones for things like Ugg Boots or DH's chunky trainers, a really shallow one for DD7, a shorter one for my lower, converse/gazelle/loafer type shoes

Holds an absolute tonne when arranged like this and made a huge difference. We don't have doors on them as I'm pragmatic and my lot are lazy - a door is a barrier to use!

Spillikina · 04/01/2026 22:26

We have this one - it's pricey but brilliant:

https://www.wayfair.co.uk/storage-organisation/pdp/marlow-home-co-oscar-20-pair-shoe-storage-cabinet-bmh1353.html

There are actually loads of shoe storage options on Wayfair:

https://www.wayfair.co.uk/keyword.php?keyword=oscar+shoe

I would say that these are definitely worth a look. If you see anything you like, it's also worth doing a reverse Google image search on the pictures, because sometimes you can find the identical item elsewhere for less than the price that Wayfair is charging. Just saying...

BringBackCatsEyes · 04/01/2026 22:33

I’ve got this from Ikea. Holds 12 pairs.

I have this shoe storage bench. It's sturdy, fits lots of shoes and looks good in my hall.

I have an ottoman in my dining room that stores my shoes. It serves as a comfy seat when I have extra company also. It's the right height to sit down and put your shoes on, compared to a normal chair. I love it. Best idea I've ever had.

Therandomtrekker1 · 05/01/2026 07:55

I used to have a six foot bookcase and adjusted the shelves for long boots at the bottom and could stack light summer shoes on top shelves. Presently have large baskets for children’s shoes with a carpet runner in the front in the hope that they have an area to not spread too far.

RessicaJabbit · 05/01/2026 08:08

We have a wooden box with a hinged lid, they all get bunged in there

limetrees32 · 05/01/2026 08:17

We’ve got a shoe rack in the hall, so that everyone can leave their shoes in front of it to trip over.

Ah yes, we have one of these.

Allsigns · 05/01/2026 09:05

Following with interest. Don't have much advise except what we've tried which hasn't really worked.

We have something like this https://www.made.com/style/su695277/f73605 and then this https://www.wayfair.co.uk/furniture/pdp/mercury-row-alora-hallway-unit-eqav1000.html?piid=100234757

It's working at the moment. The kids and I have a 'drawer' each then DH has the shelves on the coat rack. However those storage drawers don't work for shoes bigger than a size 8 and also don't work for boots or anything with a high top. So useless for winter. I keep out of season shoes in wardrobes at the moment.

We previously did kallax boxes and I found the shoes got very grubby/trashed quite quickly.

I'm thinking of installing something like this, with another shelf for boots https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1024064817/unique-shabby-chic-pallet-wood-floating?affil=feed&utm_term=259955-Home1Feed&utm_source=affiliate_window&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=uk_location_buyer&utm_content=259955&sv1=affiliate&sv_campaign_id=259955&awc=6091_1767603724_eed8304036008287eddaa84a0a40ae7a But really I'd like them behind a door as we have an open plan hall and I can imagine by the time the kids are teens I'd like to have a barrier for the smell!!

Some random ideas here https://simplyspaced.com/2016/10/40-creative-ways-organize-shoes/

We use a billy bookcase from ikea. It was by the front door to be returned on the ikea scheme when I stuck the shoe pile into vaccume and realised actually it works great. I did end up returning the original and it was tall and now have the short version with an extra shelf.

While it's not as aesthetically pleasing as having the shoes hidden I've found that everyone even guests actually use it as they can clearly see this is where shoes go.

In the past I've had the pull out storage, Kallax, buckets nothing worked bar the buckets which everyone did dump into but I found if we were in a rush it was digging through and having to put them all back in later.

I also find it helps me keep on top of smelly shoes because the smell is there so I either grab them for the wash or spray them with anti bac spray I keep with them.

ViciousCurrentBun · 05/01/2026 09:49

DH modified our under stairs cupboard it has a clothes rail that can fit about 15 coats in and wide shelves fitted on one side that can fit 5 pairs on 5 shelves and on the floor there is a small shoe rack under the coats that can fit a further 10 pairs on. Shoes that are rarely worn are in a cupboard in the conservatory.

Whatever we did I just hated seeing so many shoes as they always look awful. now they are behind doors, this is an adult only house now though so appreciate toddlers and kids are less easy to make comply.

great thread!

I don't think one single storage solution could ever be enough for our household of 3 adults and 2 DCs. Other than those rarely-worn ones which reside under my bed, we also have a hanging-pocket type thing on the back of the understairs cupboard door, wellies in the hall coat cupboard, muddy football/rugby boots and trail shoes in the utility room, a storage unit (I think it was designed for toys - 3 boxes on wheels with a shelf above) in the downstairs loo, a cubby under the stairs for walking boots, and usually one pair each just on the floor in the hallway. We have lots of shoes!!

Here is the image!

I notice in that picture that they are all very lightweight shoes like crocs or sliders. The one posted after yours by @Enterthewolves looks similar but I think more practical for larger and heavier shoes, so might be worth bearing in mind when choosing your shelving.
