It’s boring but - shoe storage?

Our hall is a mess. We have some wicker baskets but I would love some shoe storage. Ideally a cupboard with shelves? Not the fold out shoe boxes I have seen in Ikea.

Does anyone mind sharing what they have?

I’ve got a plain pine shoe shelf from Argos that’s about 30 years old and has moved house several times, currently lives on the bottom stair (a big square step). It holds 4 pairs of adult shoes per shelf, bottom shelf is stacked with flip flops, sliders etc. Ds keeps his trainers in a stackable display in his bedroom!

NewYearVibes · 05/01/2026 11:16

I have the same issue. Two adults and teenage and tweenage girls. Absolutely shoenami happening here. They both have 8 or 9 pairs of shoes in the hall.

I just think shoe storage solutions dont allow for the number of shoes a household actually has

Gettingbysomehow · 05/01/2026 12:55

I'd love a decent storage solution too. I have around 100 shoes and boots being a shoeaholic and have all kinds of storage, zip up boxes, over door hangers and so on, anything from Amazon is cheap and nasty.
I'd love to display them properly.

I have a narrow shelf unit in the hall. It has room for 5 pairs of most worn shoes and I store other shoes in boxes in my bedroom.

pinkpony88 · 05/01/2026 13:26

We replaced our hall console table with a sideboard and have a side each for our shoes (although I sometimes overspill into DH’s half 😉) everything looks so much tidier

DeepestDarkestRiver · 05/01/2026 13:54

I have this: https://www.wayfair.co.uk/storage-organisation/pdp/ebern-designs-24-pair-shoe-storage-cabinet-u001342229.html

Absolutely brilliant. We are 2 adults and 2 teens as well, so lots of shoes (admittedly mostly mine). This doesn't hold all of them, but it does hold the ones we use weekly. Most used are on the open shelves, and then others inside. It might be too big for your space, but it's perfect for us.

Starbursthack · 05/01/2026 14:16

We have no hallway, no under the stairs cupboard and although we did have a narrow IKEA shoe cupboard, people just left their shoes near on rather than in it.

We now have a large shoe bucket 🙄.
I hate it, but it actually seems to work.

We have 4 apple crates stacked 2x2, each one with a shelf in the middle. They look something like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wooden-Apple-handmade-shelved-storage/dp/B00G49G63Q

Though I'm sure ours were cheaper than that, and we definitely didn't get them from Amazon. They hold absolutely loads and work really well. Or at least they would, if our shoes didn't keep mysteriously breeding!

Do the splinters come with it?

bobby81 · 05/01/2026 16:11

This is ours - it’s actually a kitchen cupboard from Ikea but looks fine in the hallway & holds lots of shoes. The shelves are adjustable so we can fit wellies & boots at the bottom.

I'm not sure whether you genuinely have a question about whether splinters are an issue, or if you were just being unnecessarily rude.

Assuming positive intent - no, we've never got any splinters from them at all. Ours are actually quite nicely finished.

NightLightCream · 05/01/2026 17:58

I had a small-ish wooden sideboard, which was the best storage we’ve had.
You can get quite a lot in, and could use the two top drawers for gloves etc.

Beachtastic · 05/01/2026 17:59

I've got these. They sit empty in the wardrobe taking up valuable space, while the shoe rack in the porch overflows. I need to curb my Imela Marcos tendencies.

I just have a bog standard shoe rack from any where - dunelm, home bargains etc. My problem is that we enter the house via the back door so they are in the kitchen and the lobby has mothers mobility scooter

I keep on top of them all by only allowing one pair of working boots ( not wellies - they are kept in the garage ) one pair of walking shoes/trainers and slippers per person ( 3 of us )

Better shoes , sandals, clogs ,dress shoes, going out shoes etc - kept in bedrooms. I have a billy bookcase and store them in their boxes there. Older shoes and slippers - bottom of the wardrobe

Shoes in the kitchen isnt ideal - ( open plan kitchen diner where the cat and dog sleep and the hens are trying to get in the cat flap ) but we are rural, its often the roads are filthy and not a mission would you wear outside to get to the garage or go for a walk anywhere else , so that's where they stay.

Every now and then I cull them - esp when DH has 3 pairs that are "ok for the garden " sat there

Shoe tsunami 😂

We are 2 adults, 2 teenagers and an absolute shoe tsunami. We have loads in wardrobes but that’s far from the front door. We have a lovely selection of smelly running trainers, Ugg boots, crocs and dirty school shoes.

I like the idea of built in but maybe not the execution. I have room for a small unit that holds ideally 10-15 pairs?

I suggest a serious shoe culling exercise a la Marie Kondo, storing away some for summer (seasonal items) and less everyday ones in wardrobes. We did this (2 adults 2 kids) and that's what helped most longer term.

alh26 · 05/01/2026 20:56

what a timely thread, as we just purchased this today. will style it with a rug and cushions along the top. it can hold 12 pairs. the less used pairs will be kept in wardrobes.

Blarn · 05/01/2026 20:58

I have a simple shoe rack with three shelves for shoes. It works. Next to this I also have the pile of shoes. Saying "can everyone put their shoes away please" has become part of my identity.

Blarn · 05/01/2026 21:00

I know it doesn't help that my husband has size 12/13 feet so the few shoes and boots he does have takes up half the rack. We are moving house this year and I'm hoping that a larger hallway solves the problem.

ReadingTime · 05/01/2026 22:00

Would you have space to put deep drawers under the bottom of your stairs? That’s what we have and they hold tons of shoes. The drawers are as deep as the stairs are wide.

IfIwasabluebird · 05/01/2026 22:44

Wooden shoe shelves in the kitchen diner here. Not pretty but it allows air to circulate around them.

I don't like the idea of storing wet shoes in drawers or cubby holes as they need to breathe and dry out.

PigletInABlanketJohn · 06/01/2026 06:25

I got some units intended as kitchen wine racks.

They are I think 300mm deep and each "box" about 100mm square so you put one shoe in each. You can squash a pair of flats in together. About 900mm high without legs. Various widths available.

Kitchen units are often overpriced considering they are just factory-made laminated chipboard. I forget what I paid, but I am very frugal so probably a discontinued line or something. I could have made them if I could be bothered.

You could also use ordinary kitchen wall units which are usually 300mm deep, with loose-fit shelves. Very widely available at various prices and finishes.
