What temperature do you leave your heating on at night? When it's below zero celcius outside?

Just wondered, after a little debate beween me and a few other people yesterday.

Would you be so kind as to pick an option? (I will put what I leave it at a bit later.) Thank you. Smile

More blankets and warm pjs here, heating is so terrifying expensive now I don't even have it on all day and we're much better off than many people.

Oldraver · 04/01/2026 15:38

I used to have the overnight set to 12 degrees and I've only ever known it come on once when we had snow

We now have it set about 14/15, it's not come on yet though woke about 3am the other morning and my bedroom was 13.9 (thermostat for heating is in the hall)

OH gets up really early for 50% of the time it's set to come on at 20 degrees at 3am

MrsMattSantos · 04/01/2026 15:44

ASHP here, so system is on all the time - set to heat to 20 during the day and 16 at night, though I suppose the heating is off for a couple of hours at 2am when it heats up the hot water in the tank

Allmarbleslost · 04/01/2026 15:53

Ours is off from 10pm to 5.30am

JulesJules · 04/01/2026 19:25

Never have the heating on at night, never had frozen pipes. We've replaced the boiler recently and the heating engineer said the angle of the pipe going from the boiler to the external wall means it should never freeze up. Heating is on timer, usually 5-8am and 5-10pm set at 20° though we sometimes turn it up or keep it on a bit longer when it's really cold.

lacquershimmer · 04/01/2026 19:41

Not on! Warm bedding.

Sunnyside4 · 04/01/2026 19:42

Only time I've ever put the heating on was in our old house, but kept me awake.

In our current house our bedroom radiator froze for three days in a very cold spell which started off at -10c at night, so if something like those temperatures happened again, I'd probably leave it on 15c.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 04/01/2026 19:44

Never on overnight.

ParisianLady · 04/01/2026 19:56

No thermostat so it’s a case of on/off. It’s definitely off at night for us.

lazyarse123 · 04/01/2026 20:09

We don't leave it on but it's a park home, like a big caravan but not made of caravan stuff, so it doesn't take long to get warm. We have found that the bedroom doesn't get particularly warm but if we put the thermostat in there then it's stifling everywhere else so when it's really cold we put an electric heater in there for an hour before bed. We don't do it often as dh wears fleecy pyjamas and i don't feel the cold like he does.

RuthW · 04/01/2026 20:11

Never have heating on at night

aCatCalledFawkes · 04/01/2026 20:13

Ours goes down to 10 at night, the house stays at 17ish normally but if it gets colder in this weather I will just put the heating up to whatever suits.

isitmytime · 04/01/2026 20:15

Mine is set to 15 when I’m not in and overnight. It rarely comes on over night but occasionally comes on when it’s particularly cold outside and I’m at work.

DiscoBeat · 04/01/2026 20:47

We don't have it on at night. It goes off between 11pm-6am. But we do have the log burner on during cold evenings and there is some residual heat.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 04/01/2026 20:49

Ours is off overnight.

Ohpleeeease · 04/01/2026 20:50

We don’t have the heating on at night but do have frost protection set.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 04/01/2026 20:52

Our issue is we can’t change the temp for different times of day unless we do it manually. So if we wanted it on super low at night just in case, and set it at 15, that’s also the temp it would then be for the 5am timer. So then wouldn’t be warm enough.

dontletmedownbruce · 04/01/2026 20:52

I’m away abroad on holiday atm but I set the thermostat to stay on constantly at 12.5 degrees x24 hours.
I can see on my app that this is costing £3.50 per day but no frozen pipes to deal with on my return.

Thedownwardspiralpath · 04/01/2026 20:53

Have mine permanently on at 20

MiddleAgedDread · 04/01/2026 20:56

It’s usually set to kick in at 14 overnight but I’ve just changed it to 16 tonight as it’s so cold outside it’s plummeting as soon as the heating goes off and it’ll never warm up in the morning. It’s barely been above
freezing here all day and well below zero since the sun went down.

RaininSummer · 04/01/2026 20:58

Not on at night. Turn it off around eight pm.

IfIwasabluebird · 04/01/2026 20:59

21°.
I've tried it lower but keep waking up cold. I need hot, dry air to sleep.

Nat6999 · 04/01/2026 21:26

Mine has been coming onat maybe 3am for the last few nights just for an hour then going off until 7am, I don't have it set at a minimum temperature, the boiler just decides if it is needed.

Teddleshon1 · 05/01/2026 08:08

I’m very happy to read about so many people sleeping in a cool room ; the science is on your side with cooler temperatures (between around 15c and 19c) better for sleep.

I just wish so many hotels would quit it with the horribly stuffy hot rooms which causes misery to so many and is a terrible waste of energy.

Don't you just turn the thermostat down in a hotel room? Every hotel I've stayed in has had a thermostat in the room you can adjust.

Cold is better for sleep but I like to sit up in bed and read for an hour or so and can't bear it cold for that, or cold when I get up. But my children both napped outside as babies and always slept best when it was cold (especially if it was below -10)
