What temperature do you leave your heating on at night? When it's below zero celcius outside?

Just wondered, after a little debate beween me and a few other people yesterday.

Would you be so kind as to pick an option? (I will put what I leave it at a bit later.) Thank you. Smile

i dont have it on,
my bed is cozy with a hot water bottle

Periperi2025 · 05/01/2026 08:52

Never. I can't stand sleeping in a hot or even warm room. My perfect night's sleep is when it is freezing outside and i can sleep with two thick heavy duvets.
I really want to go to lapland and stay in an ice hotel, that's the dream.

WinterAconite · 05/01/2026 08:57

7 as that's the lowest I can set it. It never gets lower than double figures though so doesn't come on til morning when it's set to 19

chisping · 05/01/2026 08:58

Interesting the hot v cold sleep.
I wonder whether it's a hormonal / age thing?
I don't remember minding before menopause but since then I sleep much, much better if I am just on the cusp of being too cold. I need cold air and sleep with a window open. I have a sheet that I can snuggle into without boiling my head and a duvet that I keep at shoulder level.

Don't you just turn the thermostat down in a hotel room? Every hotel I've stayed in has had a thermostat in the room you can adjust.

Cold is better for sleep but I like to sit up in bed and read for an hour or so and can't bear it cold for that, or cold when I get up. But my children both napped outside as babies and always slept best when it was cold (especially if it was below -10)

The majority of hotel thermostats are centrally controlled, particularly in higher end properties. The one is your room generally has a limited range and so little impact on temperatures. And of course increasingly you can’t open the windows so there’s no access to fresh air which so many of us want.

Mine is the same (Hive?)

But despite living in an old house in Scotland, it has never been triggered to come on when set at 7.

AhBiscuits · 05/01/2026 09:01

Our thermostat is set to 16 at night. It bumps up to 20 at 6am.

lljkk · 05/01/2026 09:05

Bloody Hell. My bedroom would reach 8 degrees or lower rt now if window open & no heating on overnight. I don't like camping. I like temps at least 13 when I get out of bed in morning.

lottiegarbanzo · 05/01/2026 09:11

Outside temperature is irrelevant to a thermostat setting.

I find your categories don’t match my choices very well. 14-16 at night is good to me (18-19 in the day). 11-12 would be completely unacceptable. 19-20 at night would be absurdly warm.

ViciousCurrentBun · 05/01/2026 09:25

It’s been down to -5, no heating on overnight set on 10 so pipes don’t freeze. Small window open a crack in bedroom overnight. Only time it’s shut is if it gets to around -15 which is very rare. Lowest temp at the location I live at ever was -17.

2old4thispoo · 05/01/2026 09:27

The heating isn't on at night!!

I’m away abroad on holiday atm but I set the thermostat to stay on constantly at 12.5 degrees x24 hours.
I can see on my app that this is costing £3.50 per day but no frozen pipes to deal with on my return.

I went away for a few days in November in the very cold spell and left mine on a 12 constantly, it's surprising how low it goes if it's not on for a couple of days, it soon got down to 12.

cinquanta · 05/01/2026 09:32

Ours is set at 16 year round 24 hours a day regardless of the temperature outside.

Thank you, that’s helpful. I agonised for a while about the temp i should set it to.

averychoc · 05/01/2026 09:39

Mine is off at night. It probably gets turned off around 11 and back on at 8/9 ish. This morning I came downstairs at 745 and the thermostat said 18°, it’s been -2.5° outside for the past few days but the house isn’t freezing at all.

Raisondeetre · 05/01/2026 09:40

I never have mine on overnight . I turn it on when I get up.

Blondiney · 05/01/2026 09:49

Heating is off at night. I have a 15 tog duvet and a big hairy dog to keep me warm.

Tallestone · 05/01/2026 09:52

It's usually off at night but last night I knew this morning was going to be a cold one so set thermostat to 15. Turned up to 20 when I got up

Tallypoo193 · 05/01/2026 09:54

Mine is off at night but there is enough residual heat in the fabric of the building to stop things freezing in the space of a few hours.

daisychicken · 05/01/2026 09:56

We don't have ours on at night. Our boiler does have a frost setting so it will fire up if necessary.

Teddleshon1 · 05/01/2026 09:58

cinquanta · 05/01/2026 09:32

That’s logical, always amazes me when people set their thermostat in the winter to a higher setting than average summer temperatures but happily survive with no heating at all in the warmer months when it is actually nowhere near 23c or whatever, especially overnight!

TheeNotoriousPIG · 05/01/2026 10:01

I don't have the heating on overnight, because it wakes me up! It goes off at around 9pm, and my shutters keep it toasty until they're opened the following day.

I have a wool duvet and 1000-threadcount bedding that does wonders for keeping me warm!

FrostedWoods · 05/01/2026 10:05

I can barely afford to have my heating on in the dsy let alone at night. Always turned off.

Clearingaspace · 05/01/2026 10:10

16.5

Thanks for voting everyone. Seems a few people don't have it on at night then! If you don't have it on, you can pick 10 degrees C or less. (The first option.) Or if you have automatic frost protection you can pick option 1 too. (I can't add any voting options onto the poll as someone suggested... )

Anyway, according to the poll, many people do have it on at night. (When it's very cold...) 310 people have voted (so far, as of 12.15pm,) and around 70% seem to have it at 11 to 20 degrees C.

Why I asked is because 5 or 6 people me and DH have spoken to this week leave it at 23 to 26 degrees C AT NIGHT. IMO, that is a crazy temperature to leave it at overnight! The heating would be on for most of the night, we would be sweating buckets, and the heating bill would be horrendous.

I really appreciate people taking part and voting. Thank you. Smile Hope everyone has a lovely day.

Oh, we leave it at around 12-13 degrees C at night - when it's below zero C.

23-26 does sound insane but some of that might be technology dependent.

I answered 11-15 because that is what we used to do when we had a boiler. Now we have a heat pump it would cost a fortune to let the house cool down that much overnight - we need to keep it warm overnight to keep it working efficiently. Heat pumps are efficient when maintaining a steady temp but very inefficient when dealing with a big temp change.
