What temperature do you leave your heating on at night? When it's below zero celcius outside?

Just wondered, after a little debate beween me and a few other people yesterday.

Would you be so kind as to pick an option? (I will put what I leave it at a bit later.) Thank you. Smile

When it’s this cold, I don’t change the thermostat and leave it on at 25 degrees day and night.

popcornandpotatoes · 04/01/2026 14:07

Heating isn't on overnight, it clicks on automatically at around 7am

Natsku · 04/01/2026 14:10

Don't have central heating as such but electric radiators are set to around 21 downstairs, 19 upstairs, air heat pump is set to 20, and oil heating is on all the time in winter but only the kitchen and hallway radiators work with that (and they only work at full blast).
Its currently -15 where I am, if I turned my heating off my pipes would freeze overnight, and if I turned it below 18 I'd risk damage to the structure and our health so heating is on 24/7 in winter.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 04/01/2026 14:10

Our heating is always set to automatically go off overnight. I have a wool blanket, double layers including trousers and a fleece jumper, and body heat.

The house probably gets down to about 12-14 degrees? I don't know really.

Fucking hell. No wonder the world is going to the dogs.

So presumably you keep the heating on throughout the year given that 25c is above the summer daily average temperature in the UK.

What a bizarre response. What does it matter to you what temperature we choose to heat our house to? 😆😆😆. I feel the cold, and being warm is very important to me. I realise that some people don’t feel as cold as me, but I don’t swear at them because they are different to me 🙄🙄

To clarify when I say it isn't on I don't mean I turn it off, we have a thermostat so set to warm temperature until around 10pm then I think it's set so it would turn on if it go below 13 or 14c overnight but never has as far as I know. Comes back on to 21c in the morning

user1476613140 · 04/01/2026 14:16

22C at night.

Justwingingit2005 · 04/01/2026 14:17

Ours is set at 16 overnight

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/01/2026 14:17

Start thinking about it once the cat doesn't just honour us with his presence at the end of the bed, but makes his way up between our heads. But then we're warmer because there's an internally heated, purring, furry thing warming his (and our) ears up there, so we don't need to, anyhow. He has a heated mat, so if he's on his way upstairs, it's already got to be quite chilly.

I think there's frost protection on the boiler as there's a weird setting on the display that doesn't seem to be controllable, but displays a snowflake and 5C. I'd probably leave it on low (about 12-15 on the display) for a couple of days if the condenser pipe had frozen once.

No, as I said, when it’s as cold as it is now, we keep it on at 25 degrees. It’s a large, old, draughty house and we need the thermostat a bit higher in really cold weather. Most of the time the heating is set for 22 degrees and it goes off from 11.30 pm until 6.30 am, but not when it’s really cold and below zero overnight.

user1476613140 · 04/01/2026 14:19

-2C on my morning walk today. I like to be warm night and day. Love being cosy😊

I agree with @Growlybear83 on this.

BorgQueen · 04/01/2026 14:22

Mine’s set at 15° during the night, the thermostat’s in the living room, the only time it’s ever come on at that temp was when it was minus 8-10 outside, so barely a handful of times over the past 25 years. It comes on at 06.00 set at 19°.

Starlight7080 · 04/01/2026 14:23

We have it off. Little window open. Im not sure if true but its meant to be good for your sleep to have a cold bedroom.
Bed can be toastie with blankets/hot water bottle. But room itself is better cool then hot .

euff · 04/01/2026 14:34

Between 8:30pm and 6:30pm it will only come on if it goes below 14. I think it’s only happened once or twice as it stays warm enough with heating being on most of the day as we work from home.

BeardedBarley · 04/01/2026 14:36

We never have ours on overnight, we like unheated bedrooms with windows open.

We stayed in a hotel last night. Omg, we felt sick after sleeping in a heated room.

I can't sleep in a cold bedroom. That's the problem or I lie awake all night not sleeping!

Mischance · 04/01/2026 14:43

Heating is off at night.

And I only turn radiators on in the rooms I am actually using at that moment.

Can't believe someone keeps the heating at 25 day and night!

PluckyChancer · 04/01/2026 14:46

Never on at night as I usually leave our bedroom window open a bit for fresh air. I liked a cold bedroom and toasty bed.

Even though our heating is never on upstairs in the daytime either, as I like it cool, the bedroom never drops below 10°c overnight as we have good insulation.

Downstairs, I keep it at around 18-20° in the daytime.

BauhausOfEliott · 04/01/2026 14:49

Ours would come on if the temperature indoors dropped below 12C during the night, but in practice it never does, even when it’s well below zero outdoors.

Initialappointment · 04/01/2026 14:51

DisappointedD · 04/01/2026 13:10

Overnight?! Do you not have a duvet?!

Yes and a blanket ! We have a very cold non standard construction house that can’t be insulated and it’s freezing !!

RedRiverShore6 · 04/01/2026 14:59

In this weather even if I set my thermostat really high I doubt the boiler and radiators would get much past 20c.

Frankiecat2 · 04/01/2026 15:06

I’ve been putting mine at about 16.5 overnight while it’s really cold.

in the day it’s set at around 19 degrees but I might turn it up or down slightly.

I don’t like having the heating on overnight, but I also hate it when I’m cold and I hate the house feeling cold. I can struggle to warm up in bed if it’s cold, even with warm pyjamas and a thick duvet. However, when I am warm, I also do have the window in my bedroom open, and like the fresh air.

What I’m finding is that I think the heating is clicking on very briefly once or twice a night, and I’m ok with that.

Ive now been a single parent for years and a big source of arguments between me and my knobhead ex was the heating. He would never let me have it on, even when I was freezing. I have never stopped feeling thankful that I can actually put it on, up or down now, exactly when I want.
