What temperature do you leave your heating on at night? When it's below zero celcius outside?

Just wondered, after a little debate beween me and a few other people yesterday.

Would you be so kind as to pick an option? (I will put what I leave it at a bit later.) Thank you. Smile

AgeingLabMum · 04/01/2026 11:43

Never have it on at night.

LadyWiddiothethird · 04/01/2026 11:44

Never have heating on at night. It is on an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening.

Boutonnière · 04/01/2026 11:45

We don’t have the heating on at night but this new thermostat has a built in ‘set back’ temperature of 15c that is supposed to come on if the indoor temperature falls beneath that ( can’t override it) Don’t think it has fallen that low indoors yet. . There is a version that also has an outdoor temperature sensor.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 04/01/2026 11:45

Never. Temp drops to 16 overnight at the moment so I put the heating on when I get up. I like it around 18/19.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 04/01/2026 11:46

We don't have it on overnight. It's usually about 15C when we wake up. It's set to come on at 6am and is at 18 but it takes quite a while to get up to that. We are debating whether we should leave it running overnight at a low temperature so that it's quicker to heat up in the morning

Dutchhouse14 · 04/01/2026 11:46

Heating isnt on at night goes off about 10pm and back on 6 am

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 04/01/2026 11:47

I don’t have it on at night, can’t sleep. I do have a mountain of extra duvets / blankets for if it’s really cold. It comes on at 6am

Notmyreality · 04/01/2026 11:48

its off over night. Times to come on at 5am and in this weather stays on all day until an hour before bedtime.

CottageLoaf · 04/01/2026 11:48

Thermostat set for 16.5 overnight.

It’s set to come on if the thermostat temp falls below 15 degrees overnight. But this has hardly ever happened, even when it’s been freezing outside for days.

We can see the temperature and heating history on the Hive app. The house is usually about 19 degrees when we are going to bed 11.30 ish (thermostat set to 19.5 in the evenings up to 10.30pm ish). Temp decreases steadily overnight reaching about 16 degrees at half 6am, when it starts up again.

So even with no heating on overnight, it doesn’t get below 15. We def don’t need to worry about freezing pipes etc in the house. The house is pretty well insulated and is a terrace, which helps retain heat too.

We used to keep the thermostat at 18 overnight when we had little babies and we were up half the night looking after them - didn’t appreciate being cold then! But we generally all get to stay in bed at night these days.

Pedallleur · 04/01/2026 11:50

Our maximum minimum is 15 C so set for that but can make it lower. Was on last night early hours. I find it does the house no favours if it's really cold outside and there isn't some heat occasionally. Main temp is 18/19. I know some of you (or your parents) wander round in hats/fleeces rather than turn the heating on but I'd prefer to be warm and wear wool

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 04/01/2026 11:51

Ours would kick in if the hall temp dropped under 10, but living in the South East in a well insulated house, it rarely goes below 17.
Heating comes on so the house is at 20 before we have to get up, then is off from 8 until 5, usually drops to 18 during the day. Back on 5-10.
Only 2 adults in the house now and we have invested in improving the insulation etc. Back when the kids were small I’d have had it set to 17 overnight.

FurForksSake · 04/01/2026 11:51

It’s off over night. It’s on for an hour between 6 and 7 in the kitchen, office and bedrooms and two hours from 15.30 to 17.30. I’ve just put it on in a few rooms for 30 minutes on boost.

DeathMetalMum · 04/01/2026 11:52

Ours goes down to 10 overnight, mainly as the heating wakes me up if it clicks on overnight, and I've not set the timer on the boiler this year. We wear warm pyjamas and dp and I have a very heavy blanket on top of the duvet from Sept to May ish, sometimes half folded down sometimes all the way up. DC have winter duvets, fleece blankets and a medium thickness brushed cotton sheet which they combine however they feel. Dd2 was just in her sheet when I went up to bed last night as the heating had only recently been turned off.

Even if it’s freezing outside, it doesn’t drop below 15/16 inside at night, with no heating coming on overnight. It would have to be a much more poorly insulated house to risk it dropping low enough to be dangerous for the pipes. Probably the “turn it off” people know their house isn’t getting anywhere near cold enough overnight to need it coming on.

Thanks for the votes so far. Smile

Have to say though (regarding a few responses,) not having your heating on at night - when it's below zero C - is not recommended. It's important to keep it on, even if it's at a low temperature like 7 to 8 degrees C, to avoid frozen and burst pipes, that could cause a lot of costly damage.

You don’t need your whole heating in over night to avoid freezing pipes. The temp of your pipes inside your house will not get anywhere near freezing unless you have some protracted sub zero spell lasting for days or weeks and your pipes aren’t insulated. You need to think about the exposed pipes/those most at risk of freezing
and look at protective measures.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 04/01/2026 11:53

I don't, it's never on at night.

FollowSpot · 04/01/2026 11:53

My heating is just turned off at night so I voted 10’ and under.

I keep it at 18 during the day (17 if busy doing physical tasks) and it never sinks lower than about 14 or 15 overnight, even though it was -4 outside this morning .

I don’t want the heating on at night. This is what a warm duvet is for.

And in coherent sentences that is?

wthisgooing · 04/01/2026 11:54

My house very rarely ever gets below 16C, the lowest I’ve seen on the thermostat is 15C after I’ve been away for a few days in winter. But even in these cold temperatures if I let the heating come on for a couple of hours in the morning and late afternoon it keeps the house at 19C pretty much all day and night (it might dip in the early hours, I don’t see it) New build.
