What food did you have as a child that really just doesn't taste the same anymore??

I used to love breakfast muffins, brown bread and butter and an amazing shop bought cottage pie in a round foil tin which was super buttery and tasty. Also mcdonalds chicken nuggets. None of the above tastes anything like I remember, no matter where I buy it from or how much I spend on it! Is there anything you used to have that you still think about that you can't find? Or thought you'd lost forever that you have managed to track down??

Bounty Bar. Used to like it, had one recently and it was awful

Eggs. I remember the lovely taste of a boiled egg when I was a child. Now they taste of nothing. I was on holiday in France a few years ago and had an egg that actually tasted eggy, like they used to.

This re chocolates. They taste oily and plasticky.

PainterInPeril · 27/12/2025 03:02

Smash...used to love it as a kid. Now it's just disgusting.
And yes, Ribena is also gross now.

Either that, or my taste buds are more sophisticated as an adult!😁

HangingOver · 27/12/2025 03:04

Coco Pops

stargirl1701 · 27/12/2025 03:08

Dairy milk chocolate.

Disasterclass · 27/12/2025 07:35

Had some twiglets over Christmas, I’m sure they used to be more salty and marmitey

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 27/12/2025 07:40

Pot noodles
Ribena
Cadburys
Cheese flavour Doritos
I can't find chocolate covered rich tea anywhere?
I also had a watermelon flavour Bacardi breezer on Xmas day, absolutely did not taste like it did in 2001!

franke · 27/12/2025 07:42

Tinned ravioli in tomato sauce.
Cadbury's chocolate

DelilahBucket · 27/12/2025 07:46

Spaghetti hoops
Findus Crispy Pancakes
Pot Noodles
Super Noodles

I had a very balanced diet as a child 😀

Porridge. I can't explain it but porridge used to have this particular taste and texture. When it was cooked it would almost have a crackled effect on the top (more visible with a bit of sugar on) and was delicious. I've tried all different oats and cooking methods but I just can't recreate nice porridge.

A lot of what people have mentioned genuinely does taste very different now compared to when we were kids due to changes in recipes, especially changing out sugar for sweeteners in the UK with the advent of the sugar tax. It’s not our tastebuds or our nostalgia, it’s the recipes! So not only soft drinks but also Ribena, Coco Pops, and Cadburys dairy milk, spaghetti hoops, tinned ravioli, baked beans, they’ve all been ruined with sweeteners and palm oil etc. 😭😭😭

On the plus side I did find “Icy cups” on Amazon recently, those little round nutty flavoured chocolates that you would find at the corner shop as a pick n mix sweet that came in little colourful foil “cups”, and they taste just like they did back in the day!

Angel delight. I always try to recreate a kids trifle my nana used to make, using strawberry Angel Delight instead of custard but it just isn't the same. My theory is, it's because the sugar has been replaced with sweetners.

Coffeeishot · 27/12/2025 08:22

I got a box of Roses for Christmas they are horrible I am sure they taste different from last year never mind childhood!

Tomatoes don't taste the same some are just texture and water and no flavour!

Yes it is lack of sugar.

Peachbubble · 27/12/2025 08:57

Lindt chocolate.
Most chocolate in fact.
Angel Delight.

Sweetiedarling7 · 27/12/2025 09:04

Nothing premade tastes the same anymore. I have given up buying cakes and biscuits as they are pretty much all nasty.
It’s make my own or nothing now.

Buy eggs from someone who keeps hens as pets.

I used to keep.hens, now my daughter does, the taste is incredible.

RosesAndHellebores · 27/12/2025 09:11

Lokshen - I can't get my hands on a kosher chicken and it is not the same.

Peaches - my gran had a peach tree and a peach from Sainsburys is not the same as one warmed by the sun, plucked from the tree and eaten on the stable steps, juice running down your arm and the fragrant peach mingling with the smells of horse and hay. Ditto plums and tomatoes.

Cauliflower that tasted of cauliflower rather than nothing.

Bread - bread from the bakers, white bread, had texture and flavour and a hint of salt. Nowadays in the UK it's just bland and pappy.

Tammygirl12 · 27/12/2025 09:12

Ribena

Have you eaten Burford Brown eggs? They’re the tastiest

Butterflymoth · 27/12/2025 09:16

Digestive biscuits. I always had these when I had an upset stomach as a child and remember really enjoying them and the salty flavour. When I tried them recently, they tasted nothing like I remember, kind of damp tasting?? Very weird.
I remember Jaffa cakes being much nicer too.
