What food did you have as a child that really just doesn't taste the same anymore??

I used to love breakfast muffins, brown bread and butter and an amazing shop bought cottage pie in a round foil tin which was super buttery and tasty. Also mcdonalds chicken nuggets. None of the above tastes anything like I remember, no matter where I buy it from or how much I spend on it! Is there anything you used to have that you still think about that you can't find? Or thought you'd lost forever that you have managed to track down??

All chocolate. The enshitification of chocolate is just depressing. Palm oil and sod all cocoa solids anymore.

Fizzy drinks because of artificial sweeteners

Heavily processed food because of all the additives that have subsequently been banned. I understand the reasons, but "all natural" Kraft Dinner isn't even vaguely like the nuclear orange bowl of tasty weirdness I grew up on.

I had a Baileys on Christmas Day and it was so underwhelming! Didn’t seem to have any booziness to it, it lacked that famous creaminess and the taste was really weak. So much has decreased in quality recently, everything is just a bit shit and disappointing whilst costing double.

Heinz macaroni cheese (white gloop) shamefully I have Italian roots too...huge treat as a kid.
Heinz chicken supreme soup
Angel Delight - tastes like something you'd use to fill holes in a wall.
French fancies.
Feel sick now.

KFC
i think they’ve reduced the salt but it’s not the same!

MoonWoman69 · 27/12/2025 09:25

Any type of fresh tomato, all insipid and taste of nothing now.
Angel Delight, seems greasier to me.
Lucozade Original, no idea what they did to the flavour, but it suddenly became awful!
Crispy Pancakes, gorgeous when I was a kid, they are now dry and revolting.
Walkers Crisps, none of the flavours taste right any more. I'll include Seabrooks cheese and onion in this, they used to be the best, bloody awful now!

Kfc have changed their chips there was no need to change them !

Hohumdedum · 27/12/2025 09:30

Brussels. The ones this year tasted almost of nothing. I preferred them when they were less sweet.

namechangedtemporarily123 · 27/12/2025 09:32

Went into one of those old fashioned sweet shops just before Xmas, to buy some alphabet sweets. They’ve completely changed the look and taste. Gutted 😞

Funnywonder · 27/12/2025 09:33

I used to love Spelga caramel yoghurt as a child (am in NI) It was just the right balance of sweet and sour. They changed it to toffee yoghurt after a few years and it was sickly sweet. Years ago when I was in Yorkshire, I tasted Longley Farm caramel yoghurt and it was so close to the one I remember. I wish they sold it here. I would buy it ALL! Maybe it has changed now too though.

Vesta curry. Mum used to do me and Dad one each when I was a teen, adored it.

My first ever taste of a sheesh kebab, my friend who was my age around ten again was Indian and his family invited me round for a meal. We never had anything spicy in our house. It was an amazing taste sensation and my taste buds were rocked in the most amazing way! Never forgotten that pivotal moment in my life.

And Chicken and Mushroom pot noodles. They used to have loads of nice herbs, think it was parsley or chives. The first one Mum ever made for me I was about 12, had been nagging her for months to buy me one, she thought they were overpriced junk. She served it on a plate with a knife and fork 🙄. Fell in love. Just don't taste the same anymore.

SilverPink · 27/12/2025 09:52

Blacmange! My favourite dessert as a kid. DH bought some vanilla blacmange packets and they were rank 🤢

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 27/12/2025 09:55

Again, this isn’t from my childhood, but another thing that’s been utterly ruined by the sugar tax is my beloved Limonata.

It’s not even something i could simply get used to, with sweetners, it’s actually foul.

Have you eaten Burford Brown eggs? They’re the tastiest

I can second this comment.

I use them for carbonara, for extra deliciousness.

Helpwithdivorce · 27/12/2025 10:00

Radishes. They used to taste peppery. Sometimes so strong that the flavour was too much for my young mouth. Now they taste of nothing

Angel delight. I always try to recreate a kids trifle my nana used to make, using strawberry Angel Delight instead of custard but it just isn't the same. My theory is, it's because the sugar has been replaced with sweetners.

Yes i think thsts changed the taste of many drinks too.

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 27/12/2025 10:01

Special K. The shape, taste and texture have been changed completely since the ‘80s and they’ve ruined them.

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 27/12/2025 10:03

Wagon Wheels

x2boys · 27/12/2025 10:05

When I went on holiday abroad as a kid lemon Fanta was always a treat ,as they never seemed to sell it at home
I bought some recently in the local shop, it was foul ,far to sweet and chemically tasting.

XelaM · 27/12/2025 10:05

Kellogg's Cornflakes 🌽

It used to taste amazing and completely different to all the cheap supermarket brands. Then they changed the recipe, now it's as tasteless as all the other cheap brands. Just why?!?!

Bouliegirl · 27/12/2025 10:08

Cadburys chocolate

RinklyRomaine · 27/12/2025 10:23

York Fruits. Our box this year was binned in four of a box from Lidl. Flat, no longer particularly distinctive flavours, not juicy any more.

CandiedPrincess · 27/12/2025 10:27

Sugar Puffs,

Had a craving for them. They were disgusting. Yes I know they were filled with sugar but some of us are okay with that! Would never touch them again.

AgnesX · 27/12/2025 10:28

Bacon. Admittedly my mother bought hers from the butchers but supermarket bacon is invariably awful. As hard as rock to start with, over salted or with white stuff.

And what the hell have they done with Quality Street. Even the wrappers are awful.

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 27/12/2025 10:32

Agree with most of the above, but especially the Longley Farm yogurts. They taste the way yogurt should taste. My local Morrisons did stock them, but now don't 😒 Nothing else compares.

CosyMintFish · 27/12/2025 10:34

Cadbury’s chocolates used to be lovely. Now horribly waxy because they use cheap exotic fats and bulk out the cocoa-based ingredients with cheaper ones.
