What food did you have as a child that really just doesn't taste the same anymore??

I used to love breakfast muffins, brown bread and butter and an amazing shop bought cottage pie in a round foil tin which was super buttery and tasty. Also mcdonalds chicken nuggets. None of the above tastes anything like I remember, no matter where I buy it from or how much I spend on it! Is there anything you used to have that you still think about that you can't find? Or thought you'd lost forever that you have managed to track down??

Jelly Tots were my first thought. I bought a tube of them rececntly, and was most disappointed!

Also in the firing line is Ribena, smaller bars of Cadbury's chocolate (some of them taste like they've gone off, but the huge bars seem fine), chocolates that come in big tubs for Christmas, butterscotch Angel Delight, McDonald's fries and school dinners. While I blamed Jamie Oliver for the latter two at the time (and even his cookery books are much healthier than they used to be!), the rest of it was probably due to the sugar tax.

Secondary school dinners for me, i'll never forget deep fried potato balls and turkey drumsticks followed by the thickest choc milkshake ever 😋

Just come back here because I remembered. McVities digestives - the ordinary ones. They used to have such a lovely texture and flavour. I bought some because I had a craving and they were so disappointing. Realised they were low fat so got the proper ones but they were shite too.

If anyone knows of any other brands that taste like the old ones I'd love to know! I've even contemplated trying to work out how to bake my own.

Ooh and Dh reminded me Krackawheat - they used to have a salty, malty savouriness.

Hovis digestives are more like McVities used to be, still a bit salty and crumbly.

Sara Lee frozen desserts - pecan danish one.

sploshsplash · 11/01/2026 22:04

Pink panther wafer biscuits

FurForksSake · 11/01/2026 22:04

M&S and Sainsbury chocolate digestives aren’t bad. You need to do a taste test.

Sugar puffs, I don't even think they are called that now. Frosted wheat puffs, they used to be so sugary that they stuck together at the bottom of the packet and formed a huge concrete block. I know its just as well they don't do that any more, but the childhood bliss of taking out the cereal brick and hacking off a chunk, into a bowl of cold whole fat milk. Heaven.

My mum’s cottage pie. I loved it, it was my favourite dinner. I can’t make it as nice.

Most of it tbh. Ribena. After Eights. Jaffa Cakes. And the cream in cream cakes seems to have loads of air in it. I remember eclairs stuffed with proper cream from our local baker. Not anymore. Or if it is, you have to buy it from m and s and it's about four quid a go.

Mosaic123 · 07/06/2026 15:10

Milk Bottle sweets. They taste of nothing now. They used to have a very special taste and were not as soft.

I've tried quite a few brands in the form of research.....

cakewitch · 07/06/2026 15:55

Peaches. Fresh ones. Never been the same since I was a child.
And everything thats supposed to be salty..
Pretzels
Peanut butter
Crisps and salted peanuts.

Wibble128 · 07/06/2026 15:57

Marmite, less salty and lacks bite.

Wibble128 · 07/06/2026 15:58

Cadburys milk chocolate. - Tastes so bad we no longer buy it. Well done Mondalez.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 07/06/2026 15:59

Jersey Royals.

FurForksSake · 07/06/2026 19:48

Cheeselets.

rememberingthem · 07/06/2026 19:53

Nothing tastes the same anymore because most things replace sugar with vile artificial sweeteners and all sorts of fillers that work out cheaper than using proper ingredients.

mum2jakie · 07/06/2026 20:00

Sugar Puffs
Angel Delight
Vimto
Linda McCartney sausages

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 07/06/2026 20:10

Bloody everything since COVID. I see something and think " oh yes I remember that's delicious" but my COVID-ey taste buds say " let's just ruin that for you now"
