Milk for Santa. Surely not!

HostaCentral · 21/12/2025 12:30

On another social media platform on British traditions, so many comments suggesting leaving a carrot and a glass of milk out for Santa.

When did this become a thing? Poor Santa. He always got a glass of whiskey or brandy from us. Kept him going all night. Also no mince pie??

Milk for Santa, carrots for the reindeers, and maybe some biscuits for Santa. No alcohol. It’s dangerous to drink and drive. Wouldn’t want Santa to have a sleigh crash.

BingBongMerrilyWithPie · 21/12/2025 12:33

I saw Christmas clueing "Santa, milk, cookies" in a word quiz yesterday.

Santa has usually been a whisky drinker here. Sometimes we even buy a nice one in specially for him.

TheChosenTwo · 21/12/2025 12:34

We did carrot and milk for Rudolph and a mince pie and brandy for FC,
some houses are dry and wouldn’t have booze in anyway. Not ours but there are lots of reasons that people might just put milk out!
Last year dc1 enjoyed FC’s sloe gin and mince pie (they are 21).

What if he's lactose intolerant?

Its always been whisky and a glass of wine for his wife here (whose done all the behind of scenes work).

GKG1 · 21/12/2025 12:36

It was always milk when I was a kid!! Now it’s whatever the kids think on the day…we don’t drink tho so no whisky for him here. I never thought about him being deprived 😆

FerrisWheelsandLilacs · 21/12/2025 12:37

Surely Santa drinks what the parents drink? Why would I go out and buy a bottle of whisky or brandy to appease a fictional character, and then what - pour it down the sink? It’s hardly cheap…

Santa drinks a glass of ice cold Coca Cola in our house (have you not seen how much he loves Coca Cola, there’s even a picture of him on the can 🙈). He drank baileys when I was a kid.

Cigarette · 21/12/2025 12:41

Santa gets booze! Milk and cookies is only normal if you’re American. And besides, I don’t want to pour milk that’s been out in room temperature back into a jug or carton, and I certainly don’t want to drink a glass of milk. Whereas I’m happy to down a nice cognac…

HomeStress · 21/12/2025 12:45

It was milk when I was a kid and not everyone drinks alcohol.

Milk is a US thing (strange country), he gets sherry or port in this house and carrots for the reindeer.

WarrenTofficier · 21/12/2025 12:53

Carrot and milk for the reindeers, mince pie and a glass of port for Santa here. By the time I turn in on Christmas Eve I have very much earned that glass of port.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 21/12/2025 12:55

Either going to be milk here or a Pepsi max. A carrot school has given all the kids then dd2 tried to eat. Maybe a fondant fancy I’ll scoff.

dontmalbeconme · 21/12/2025 12:56

Something alcoholic here because Mummy Santa has been hard at work and needs a tipple.

Lavender14 · 21/12/2025 12:56

Always milk in our house as well and was milk when I was growing up. I fully get why some people do alcohol instead but I don't know, I feel a bit weird about my child leaving out alcohol for santa, milk feels more... innocent or something. And I'd say i have a fairly open minded approach to alcohol and I drink myself. I guess maybe it's what you're used to?

thefamous5 · 21/12/2025 12:57

Always milk here. We aren't non-drinkers, but we dont keep bottles of booze in the house

FeralWoman · 21/12/2025 12:57

Milk is Australian too. National milk sales increase in the week leading up to Christmas. I’m sure that some is used for cooking like making custard.

I grew up in a dry house so no booze available for Santa.

Thoughtsandprayers · 21/12/2025 12:58

When I was a child Santa had a mince pie &
glass of sherry, carrot for the reindeer.

With my own dc, Santa had a mince pie and a glass of port as we don’t drink whiskey. But now I’m worrying that we were encouraging him to drink drive.

BooksAndHooks · 21/12/2025 12:59

Always been milk, carrot and mince pie for us.

Pricelessadvice · 21/12/2025 13:00

My dad very much used to enjoy his whisky and mince pie on Christmas Eve after I’d gone to bed 😅

TheNightingalesStarling · 21/12/2025 13:01

Don't worry about the drink driving, he sends it back to the North Pole and enjoys it during the year with help from the elves

RichardMarxisinnocent · 21/12/2025 13:02

It was sherry when I was a child. And he was Father Christmas, not Santa.

ScarletWitchM · 21/12/2025 13:03

Mince pie & a glass of brandy

Pascha · 21/12/2025 13:03

My two used to insist on blackcurrant squash for santa. We upgraded to whisky after they had gone to bed.

Nomoreink · 21/12/2025 13:03

Mince pie and a Bailey’s here ( and a carrot of course for Rudolph, though one year, that was forgotten!)

fndshalom · 21/12/2025 13:03

It’s always been mince pie and sherry for Father Christmas and a carrot for Rudolph. However I never had sherry in the house so poured a glass of wine. Never heard of this milk business until everyone started getting so serious

TorroFerney · 21/12/2025 13:05

It's always been milk for him and a carrot for Rudolf (that is why the other reindeers hate him as he gets all the food). I'm 53 so not a recent thing.
