I still think it's the right move though. Increasing business rates when pubs were already struggling is the opposite of helpful. They need to raise money somehow but it felt like pubs were unnecessary side casualties.

The problem is that the take from business rates - especially with retail premises - is also only going to decline too.

The issue is a lot of money is being sucked out of the UK without ever seeing a tax return. Under the cloak of "attracting business".

I think it made it safely to recycling! It really wasn't that windy in the end.

I always feel guilty about the demise of Christmas tree and end up apologising to it as I put it out.

We have a special Christmas tree recycling facility in our village - goats. People just leave the trees by their pen and they gradually get put in for them to eat.

Oh no! The Fir Tree eaten alive 😱

This is the illustration that haunts me:

The problem here is that the people who blather on about the government censoring things are now going to have a field day attacking the government for not censoring things. You can picture the Mexpress headlines now..

PandoraSocks · 09/01/2026 16:29

I wouldn't support blocking X tbh. Also with VPNs, wouldn't it be a waste of time? I don't know how VPNs work exactly, though.

SerendipityJane · 09/01/2026 16:43

Any "blocking" would be less than effective. really just virtue signalling.

The problem is wherever we'd like to go, you wouldn't start here.

PandoraSocks · 09/01/2026 16:43

Honestly, I think Labour has just handed the right a mahoosive stick to beat them with. I await the threads on this...

PandoraSocks · 09/01/2026 16:44

Surely the answer is to prosecute those in the UK who use this vile tool?

Labour ?

You mean the government ?

What would you have them do ? Ignore the process that should apply to all ?

Not sure that's a good idea.

Jane, I can't tell if you are being serious or not, but obviously I mean the government.

I appreciate your point that the Online Safety Act has to apply to all. I despise X and would not care if it died tomorrow, but this makes me uneasy. Especially in light of recent events.

Let's see what Ofcom decides.

and there was me worrying I was getting old ...

Let's see what Ofcom decides.

That's the point. If "the law" prescribes a certain route then it would be highly improper for anyone from government to interfere. Separation of power and all that.

And any serious person who either knows this or has educated themselves to this would understand.

So it can be mathematically proven that anyone who comments in such a way as to demonstrate they do not understand this is fucking stupid and can be safely ignored as adding anything of value to the debate.(Or possibly life itself if you integrate over time.)

The government could just stop posting on X, other platforms are available.

Well unfortunately, the narrative is already that Starmer wants to ban X as per Stupid Hall's post.

It would have been better for Kendall to say nothing until Ofcom decides, IMHO.

DuncinToffee · 09/01/2026 17:19

But then you get angry posts about the Government not doing anything and allowing CSA

If they were going to do that, then they would have by now.

Remember how popular The Sun was, despite printing child pornography on page 3.

DuncinToffee · 09/01/2026 17:24

Ofcom has given an update - its statement says:

“We urgently made contact [with X] on Monday and set a firm deadline of today to explain themselves, to which we have received a response. We’re now undertaking an expedited assessment as a matter of urgency and will provide further updates shortly.”

Prosecutions are already backlogged. Your suggestion is looking at prosecuting people in every hamlet, village, town and city.

Are other European countries doing anything?

Poor Susan

Anyone else thinking she’s brave posting that on X - surely the temptation is there to use the Grok facilities?

did anyone see the heavily made over reform councillor photos - wiped about 10 years of some of them?

There is a maxim about not giving an order unless you known it will be obeyed.

A corollary might be don't introduce a law unless you know it will be enforced.

Wasn't there a suggestion a while back that there should be a one-in one-out situation with legislation ? Because as I recall we have over doubled the number of statutes on the books with no let up in sight.
