Should I just pay for this?

It’s Xmas jumper day at DS’ school today. I completely forgot and only realised when I checked the class WhatsApp this morning. One mum mentioned she had forgotten so I replied to her saying not to worry, I also forgot but DS is fine about it and will be just wearing a Santa hat (unlike DD, DS is very chill about dress-up days etc at school). Another class mum then messaged me privately to say she had a spare jumper if DS would like to wear it? I said thanks but didn’t think DS was too bothered but she said it would be nice for him to wear it as someone was planning to take a class picture of all the kids dressed up. So we met at the school gate, she handed over the jumper and told DS to put it on in class. I thanked her and said (this is relevant) that I’d wash and return it to her.

I now have a message from her asking if I’d like to pay for it via Monzo otherwise a bank transfer is fine. The jumper is £17.99. The cost isn’t an issue but I’m a bit WTF as thought I was borrowing it?!

Wow a fab dh on mn!! Who knew they even existed here!!??

purpleme12 · 17/12/2025 18:33

I would have been like your DP to be honest

JDM625 · 17/12/2025 18:53

I hope the CF is on MN reading this thread! 😆

DP handed it back! Apparently she said something like “So she doesn’t want it?” and then took the jumper. I asked him if she looked annoyed and he shrugged that he had no idea. I would love to have this gift of not giving two shits that men have😅

Do you loan your DP out to get others out of CF situations ?
Asking for a friend 😃

Although I've made very clear upthread that she was a CF, I don't think you should have removed the tag - I wouldn't do that for a jumper I was only borrowing, or at least would have checked first, although given you said you'd wash it before returning her chance to tell you not to was at that point as it wouldn't survive a wash.

Still think she was being ridiculous, and you shouldn't have paid though (good for DH!) but removing the tag from a brand new jumper you only thought you were borrowing does make it a bit more of a grey area.

He is quite blunt sometimes it genuinely makes me cringe. Added to this is a heavy non English accent which somehow makes the bluntness worse😂 But yes, he is exactly the person you need in these situations.

I’ll loan him to you…and then inform you later I need paying.

To be fair it's the opposite way round in my household 😂But well done to your DP 👏

Just remind her that yes, paying is a problem because I didn't agree to buy it. You completely sprung that on me when it was too late.

Edited

Exactly!! Maybe she assumed that everyone knows an offer like that means paying, but even so, she should have named a price. You just need to say you were expecting to borrow it and are now returning it. Aaaargh!

I think I might be falling in love with your husband...

musicforthesoul · 18/12/2025 09:37

Good on you DH, he did the right thing just handing the jumper back.

Honestly the reason you get people being cheeky and trying it on is because some people will just pay to make the awkwardness go away. Enough will just pay up to make it worth trying. Its better not to identify yourself as the easy mark!

honeylulu · 18/12/2025 09:53

Haha, love hearing about a CF foiled! Well played OP's DP!

Statsquestion1 · 18/12/2025 09:57

My guess is she didn’t pay 1799 for the jumper. She probably got it in the sale after Christmas let’s be honest and she’s trying to pull a fast one. I wouldn’t pay 17.99 for a Christmas jumper anyway. Where was it from?

gamerchick · 18/12/2025 09:58

Excellent update.

At least you know what she's like now.

luckylavender · 17/12/2025 10:31

Post for it this once. Then you have her number.

So just bend over and take it? Absolutely-fucking-lutely not! That is precisely how CFers continue it literally fuels them.
Well done OP’s DP! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Eastie77Returns · 18/12/2025 12:31

The jumper is from Next. As far as I can see, it costs £18 - £24 depending on age. Oddly enough she asked me for a very specific £17.99😅

Maybe the penny discount was for the tiny bit of paper she had torn off the price tag!

PoweredBySheerSpite · 18/12/2025 12:40

I’d pay for it and give it her back. Let her squirm.

Catapultaway · 18/12/2025 12:43

Id prob just put it down to a miscomunication and pay it given the amount... but yes, i would have asdumed it was a loan

mixedpeel · 18/12/2025 18:12

😃you’re a quick learner, I see!

What an absolute nerve! The charity shops are full of Christmas jumpers, she's pulling a fast one.

I saw a load of them in a charity shop today - £1 each!!
