Back in the '90s my poor uncle and 'aunt' couldn't. Uncle was divorced with one deceased and one living exSpouse, whom he married at 18 shortly after the death of his mother and just before departing for WWII. All his siblings gave statements that at the time he was in shock and 'mentally unable to make the decision' (sound familiar?) and that they all tried to talk him out of it. Even his ex-wife made a statement that they were 'just kids' and didn't know what they were doing. They were married in the Episcopal church so I guess the marriage 'counted'. The Catholic church said 'no'.
Oh it's not like that any more. Well certainly not in the UK. My relative's first attempt to get an annulment of her Roman Catholic marriage in the 90s failed (which pissed her off as her affair partner prefered to date married women to avoid commitment "was a devout Christian who couldn't possibly marry a divorcee").
She tried again a couple of decades later when she'd got a new bloke lined up and it sailed through. Don't even know if it cost very much, and her ex didn't get involved other than to return the papers saying, "Load of rubbish, but I daresay she'll get whatever she wants; she usually does."
It's a bums-on-seats job. If the Catholic Church doesn't give them what they want they'll go elsewhere. Anyway, should it ever happen that Vance wanted an annulment of his marriage to Usha, I've no doubt he'd get it pronto.
That is getting a bit ahead of ourselves though.
I don't doubt Vance of Bray is obsequious and flexible enough that he'd drop Usha like a hot brick if it suited him, but I wouldn't put it higher than evens that he'd succeed with Erika Kirk, and even then probably not for some time yet.
