Update on her Facebook page by her family.

It's so upsetting. She made me fall in love with reading again as an adult.

Here's the text if you can't see:

We are heartbroken to announce the passing this morning of our beloved Sophie (aka Maddy, aka Mummy). She died peacefully, with her final days filled with her true loves: family and music and warmth and Christmas and joy.

We can’t imagine what life will be like without her radiance and love of life. Despite her illness, which she bore with unimaginable courage, Sophie counted herself truly blessed - to have such wonderful family and friends, and to have had the extraordinary success of her writing career. She took nothing for granted and was forever grateful for the love she received.

She will be missed so much our hearts are breaking💔💔💔

Noo!! But she was young (ish)!! I liked her books when I was younger. So sad.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 10/12/2025 12:53

How sad 🥺

May she rest well

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 10/12/2025 12:54

Heavens, what happened to her?
She was much younger than me.
I'm sad about this. Her books were brilliant.

KenAdams · 10/12/2025 12:55

She was diagnosed with a brain tumor earlier this year from what I recall but she was still doing things so I thought she was recovering.

Needmorelego · 10/12/2025 12:56

Oh no.
That's really sad.
I love her books (including the Madeleine Wickham ones).
Her last two are on my To Be Read pile so I will move them to the top.
😭🙁

FuzzyWolf · 10/12/2025 12:57

How sad and still so young as well.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 10/12/2025 12:59

We really do need more research and treatments into brain tumours. So many die.

Loved her books.Very easy to read. Thoughts to her family.

Lemonbaytree · 10/12/2025 12:59

I'm quite shocked by this, I knew she wasn't well but I really hoped she would be okay. She got me into reading more when I was younger. Very sad.

HelloCheekyCat · 10/12/2025 13:03

That's really shocked me, I love her books for an easy read, particularly the Shopaholic series.

ChessieFL · 10/12/2025 13:06

That’s sad. I knew she had a brain tumour but I had the obviously wrong impression that she was recovering.

That's really shocked me, I love her books for an easy read, particularly the Shopaholic series.

The financially irresponsible Becky Bloomwood always made me feel better about my spending!

Her most recent book “What does it feel like” explains her illness and prognosis very well.

One of the best things Sophie / Eve (the character in the book) said when asked how she wanted to live her last years was that she wanted to live her life but better. So still shop in Tescos for cheese but buy the nice cheese.

Living “my life but better” is something that I have been trying to do ever since.

Notonthestairs · 10/12/2025 13:16

Thats sad news. She was a talented writer. I heard her speak at a Waterstones event a while ago and she was, as you’d expect, warm and witty.

Happyjoe · 10/12/2025 13:17

Oh that is sad, far too young.

Holluschickie · 10/12/2025 13:18

How very sad. I loved the first two or three Shopaholics.

workingcocker · 10/12/2025 13:19

That’s so sad. Literally the only author whose books I read.

i grew up reading her shopaholic books.

My favourite was probably Domestic Goddess.

TubeScreamer · 10/12/2025 13:20

Very sad. I met her a couple of times years ago when she was just starting out and I worked in a bookshop, and she was a lovely, warm person.

Lindy2 · 10/12/2025 13:20

Such sad news. I really enjoy her books as a fun, light read. I'm sure she had so much more to give if only she'd had more time.

Rainbowtips · 10/12/2025 13:20

I loved her books. I lost my Mum to the same horrible disease.

Beedeeoh · 10/12/2025 13:21

Oh no. I was half expecting it as unfortunately I have personal experience of her cancer and it's one of the worst. Still, I hoped she'd have more time. Too young and she sounds like a lovely person.

gogomomo2 · 10/12/2025 13:21

So sad , I know two people with incurable brain tumours currently in their 50’s personally, seems more common, horrible for families

NotableI · 10/12/2025 13:22

I re-read the Shopaholic books so many times when I was a teenager.

I hope her family get some comfort out of the joy her work brought to so many people.

Beedeeoh · 10/12/2025 13:23

My daughter loved her Mummy Fairy and Me series, we read them all.
