Update on her Facebook page by her family.

It's so upsetting. She made me fall in love with reading again as an adult.

Her most recent book “What does it feel like” explains her illness and prognosis very well.

One of the best things Sophie / Eve (the character in the book) said when asked how she wanted to live her last years was that she wanted to live her life but better. So still shop in Tescos for cheese but buy the nice cheese.

Living “my life but better” is something that I have been trying to do ever since.

Bless her, she must have lived near a better Tesco than me! mine is going for the world record of how many ways they can find to market cheddar cheese.

RIP Sophie, they will have lovely cheese in the afterlife, otherwise there isn’t any point to it.

Will never stop re-listening (via Audible) and re-reading her books xx

HelloSkeletonFace3 · 10/12/2025 13:55

Such sad news. Thoughts are with her family.

FuckRealityBringMeABook · 10/12/2025 13:56

Very sad. What a legacy though, giving so many people such joy through reading.

Newsenmum · 10/12/2025 13:59

So sad when this happens, especially when their work feels timeless. You think of those characters as lasting forever. Well they will. Her work will live on. Much love to her family.

BellaBal · 10/12/2025 14:02

Oh that’s terribly sad. I’m so sorry for her family, it’s too young.

Rachie1973 · 10/12/2025 14:03

Oh no! I love her books. :(

Cynic17 · 10/12/2025 14:05

Her Madeleine Wickham books were the ones I preferred, but very much underrated.

Vargas · 10/12/2025 14:10

55 is no age. How very sad, her poor family. She was a wonderful writer.

Mincepietastic · 10/12/2025 14:14

Terrible, so sad.

Remember Me? is one of my all-time favourite reads.

Catmandoude · 10/12/2025 14:15

Oh my goodness that’s so sad. Poor lady x

Zov · 10/12/2025 14:17

Oh nooooooooooo! Shock She is WAY too young to die. R.I.P. Flowers

We really do need more research and treatments into brain tumours. So many die.

Loved her books.Very easy to read. Thoughts to her family.

Is it just me or are they getting more common? A close friend of mine died of one, similar age to Sophie. So sad to hear this.

reallysillydilemma · 10/12/2025 14:18

Oh my goodness 💔 this is so sad. Really heartbroken for her family. Such an awful time for it to happen to, right before Christmas 💔

Idontpostmuch · 10/12/2025 14:21

How awful. I've just started reading The Party Crasher. Then looked at MN and saw this. Very sad.

bondsy · 10/12/2025 14:26

So so sad by there. She was a brilliant author and her books provided so much comfort and laughter to me. I have re-read the shopaholics multiple times.

Cufflinkers · 10/12/2025 14:27

I really didn’t like her books after a certain time, so completely stopped reading. But certain ones I read over and over again as a teen and will always be special to me.

Really sad news and it’s such a sad thought that when a creative person passes away so does the introduction of their future work.

tac10 · 10/12/2025 14:27

this is so sad. I loved reading her books and met her while she was doing her ‘My not so Perfect Life’ book tour. She was so lovely, friendly (asking my son a few questions) while signing her book.

I bought I got your number and burnout recently but not had a chance to read them yet - will make sure I do with a glass of wine!

she was a funny/talented writer and gone too soon - thoughts are with her family!

NewNameforThisPost2025 · 10/12/2025 14:29

Oh no! I love her books! This is so sad.

PullTheBricksDown · 10/12/2025 14:32

This is awful news. Haven't read anything of hers for a while but her books always made me laugh. That's not a bad legacy. I hope her family know how many people loved and were entertained and cheered up by her books.

Horses7 · 10/12/2025 14:40

Oh no - I knew she had an incurable disease but was hoping for a miracle cure.
Sophie was such a clever, funny and unique writer - loved all her books. I am a shopaholic (and do all the things she described) although I’m trying hard not to be!
Condolences and sympathy to her family.

ElBandito · 10/12/2025 14:40

Just heard on the news and my eyes welled up. So sad, far too young and her books were wonderful.

TonyTheImpala · 10/12/2025 14:44

Beedeeoh · 10/12/2025 13:21

Oh no. I was half expecting it as unfortunately I have personal experience of her cancer and it's one of the worst. Still, I hoped she'd have more time. Too young and she sounds like a lovely person.

Agreed, the same here. I believe it was glioblastoma, it’s an awful one and my heart goes out to her family.

FestiveFruitloop · 10/12/2025 14:45

Oh no, so sad to read this. I'm a little older than a lot of her readers, but love her books, several are among my top favourite reads ever.

55 is no age. 😥I knew she had a brain tumour but wasn't sure if it was malignant. I think I bought her book about it on my Kindle, actually, but I don't think I'll be reading that for a while, it's too sad. Her poor family.

user86397409754 · 10/12/2025 14:46

Ah, thats so sad.
I’ve been to three funerals of people in their 40’s this year. If you’ve got stuff you want to do, do it now…
