Update on her Facebook page by her family.

It's so upsetting. She made me fall in love with reading again as an adult.

So sad to hear this. I love her books. I’m currently re-reading Christmas Shopaholic and it’s so funny. I love how she plots her stories. She was brilliant at her genre.

Taytocrisps · 10/12/2025 19:26

It's very sad news. I loved her Shopaholic books - they were very funny.

BeaLola · 10/12/2025 19:36

So very very sad, RIP Sophie.Flowers

I adore her shopaholic books - Becky is a force of nature - the most gorgeous storytelling.

JacknDiane · 10/12/2025 19:40

That is so sad. Im reading one of her books just now ,"Surprise Me "...its so good.
I feel so sad for her and her family. She was only 55.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 10/12/2025 19:44

Extremely sad news.

JacknDiane · 10/12/2025 19:51

I just read she had 5 children. They are probably quite young still. How bloody sad 😢

Tulipsriver · 10/12/2025 19:57

That's so sad. Her shopaholic series was my comfort read all the way through university. It's such a talent to be able to make people laugh.

SwirlyShirly · 10/12/2025 19:59

That’s very sad to hear. I loved the shopaholic books as a young adult. She was very young, what a shame!

Octopus45 · 10/12/2025 20:00

So sad. I loved the Shopaholic series and also Can you keep a Secret? The character Emma really resonated with me, loved it when she told her boyfriend she needed a thong in a size 8 rather than a size 12

McChubble · 10/12/2025 20:01

RIP Sophie and thank you for the laughs you gave me reading your books

TheFatCatSatOnTheMat · 10/12/2025 20:50

Very sad news, far too young. I particularly love Can You Keep A Secret and The Undomestic Goddess which are hilarious. What a sad loss.

Alwaystired23 · 10/12/2025 20:58

I saw this earlier, I didn't realise she was ill. I loved her books, they made me laugh out loud. So sad, so young.

I often think about her cutting out the size tags in her knickers and have a little chuckle about it as I go about my day.

frockandcrocs · 10/12/2025 21:06

So sad. I picked up Can You Keep A Secret in a charity shop, and I remember being mortified that I let slip an actual out loud laugh on the bus, on the way to college! That book made me howl laughing!

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/12/2025 21:17

How sad. Loved her shopaholic books

MrsChristmasHasResigned · 10/12/2025 21:33

I love the Shopaholic books and feel so sad for her and her family. My 80 year old dad borrowed one once when he was at mine and loved them too. She was such a great writer.

Silverbirchleaf · 10/12/2025 21:35

Really sad news, and quite a shock.

booksunderthebed · 10/12/2025 21:51

Oh no, I am so devastated. I feel selfish that my first reaction was no more Sophie Kinsella books when I read that she has 5 children.

I love her books. Its unfair to call them chick lit when they are so much more.

Her characters are all quite ridiculous but her plotlines were great!

firstofallimadelight · 10/12/2025 21:56

How awful, I didn’t know she was ill. I’ve read all her novels. I loved the shopaholics, Can you keep a secret and undomesticated goddess. She created vibrant characters that you fall in love with.

Delatron · 10/12/2025 22:00

So sad to hear this today. I absolutely loved reading the Shopaholic books years ago. I rediscovered her this summer on holiday reading The Burnout which I also loved. Her books just engage you straight away. She had such a gift.

I’m going to order ‘What does it feel like’ which may be a heartbreaking read..

firstofallimadelight · 10/12/2025 22:07

I use to own hundreds of books until I lost them all in a fire 😢. I decided I would use a library going forward, I replaced around 20 of my favourite books only and 12 of them were Sophie’s. They are the type of books you can read again and again.

topsecretcyclist · 10/12/2025 22:13

So very sad. I love her books, I've read them many times. I will pick one to read now.

My DP's friend had a brain tumour. He died 5 months after diagnosis. So awful. ☹️

WestwardHo1 · 10/12/2025 22:17

This is very sad. Her books are great fun. RIP Sophie.

The Undomestic Goddess is one of my favourites.

Aluna · 10/12/2025 22:46

So sad. 😥I used to know her and her sister Gemma when we were kids. She was called Madeleine Townley then.

longtompot · 11/12/2025 15:45

Such sad news :(
