Although I do rather like Ecclesiastes as well.
Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
I think he spoke a lot of sense that Ecclesiastes bloke. 😁

I personally think the bible is much better enjoyed - and understood - by atheists I mean talking snakes ?
I tend to agree. One of my favourite bits is the story of Balaam's ass (Numbers 22). I always imagine her speaking with Eddie Murphy's voice.

Ecclesiastes was always my favourite book in the bible, very appealing to teenage angst

Well, when I was a child I thought one of the commandments was ‘don’t eat 2 bowls of Frosties’ as every time I asked for that for breakfast my dm would scream at me ‘gluttony! This is in the bible’ and I thought she meant there was a literal rule saying ‘thou must not consume two bowls of Frosties ‘ or something and I used to tell my teacher about it 😂

As a fan of language and history (sometimes at the same time) I like the prose of the Kings James Bible.

Knowing MN are a diverse bunch (and because I really can't be arsed to check 😀) I would be curious to know if any other European language has been as influenced by their state Bible as English ?

Oh don't be so grumpy 🤣.
As an atheist if I wish to pick and choose the good bits and ignore the rest I can.

You'll note I didn't quote (for example) Psalm 137 v9 Happy is the one who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks. simply because I don't think that's a very good guide to life.

Oh that's from the Boney M psalm!
An awful thing to say, but sounds like it was a desire for revenge after what the Babylonians had done to them.

Namechangedatheist · 10/12/2025 17:31

Actually I'd forgotten about psalm 147. Another rule certainly worth living by.
He hath no pleasure in the strength of an horse : neither delighteth he in any man's legs.

HonoriaBulstrode · 10/12/2025 17:42

I find the 23rd Psalm very comforting, even though I have no particular religious beliefs:

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

(And King James always, please.)

SerendipityJane · 10/12/2025 17:45

If we rebranded the Bible as a new Harry Potter book, more people might actually pay attention to what it says, rather than just recite it ad absurdum. Who knows ?

The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.

This is completely true - there are so many unpleasant things, from minor inconveniences to major life-impacting events that, when you consider why they have happened, the love of money - the desire to make or save money - is the reason.

Lifelover16 · 10/12/2025 18:03

Thessalonians - "The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat". Also quoted by Lenin re the idle wealthy, and John Smith economist.

Jugendstiel · 10/12/2025 16:10

'An eye for an eye' - meaning - take revenge on others (OT) versus 'turn the other cheek' meaning do not respond to aggression with aggression (NT)

Actually, 'an eye for an eye' was an instruction not to overreact when seeking justice. So the emphasis is on taking a balanced response and not allowing the desire for revenge to make matters worse. Turn the other cheek then takes this a step further but still pointing to de-escalation and to the danger of retaliation/revenge.

That was my first thought too. Psalm 23:4

I think this is what sums up for me my issues with god and religion. Try telling that to the poor buggers in Gaza and Somalia. Or Afghanistan. Or all the places where we humans do vile things to each other. Which is probably everywhere really.

Well, no, I wouldn't try talking abut the Bible in Gaza or Somalia or Afghanistan.

Romans 12:12-21:

12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord's people who are in need. Practice hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.[3] Do not be conceited. 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay,"[4] says the Lord. 20 On the contrary: "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head."[5] 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
