Treat thy neighbour as thyself.

I really can't see anyway to perfect that. In fact it's all you need in life. Job done.

An eye for an eye

This predates the Bible and is also largely misunderstood.

Yup. Book of Exodus, Ex 21: 1 onwards. Its the second set of slave laws intermingled with laws for non slaves. Ex 21:32 has a bit about stoning Oxen too.

And this bit that might be good for parenting threads on here, is just a few lines above the eye for eye verse.

Exodus 21:17 And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death. (KJV)

But TBH, suggesting a parent put their DC to death might get a ban from here.

Do not be afraid.

That was my first thought too. Psalm 23:4

Upholstery · 10/12/2025 15:48

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Those three wise men they've got a semi by the sea
Matt. 2

It is also in the bible, and I understand what it means. HTH.

I like it because it displays the wisdom to be found in the book.

It instructs on how to get specked or striped goats and sheep by having them mate in front of a speckled or striped background.

Herbal remedies more like, infused in the water and improving the health and fertility of the livestock who drink it. Poplar for instance has pain relieving properties, is antiseptic and good for arthritis.

Proverbs 21:9
Better to live on the roof than share the house with a nagging wife.

Jugendstiel · 10/12/2025 15:59

"Do as you would be done by" i.e. Behave towards others as you would like them to behave towards you.
(Matthew and Luke)
Best advice on how to achieve considerate social cohesion.

OrangeCatKitten · 10/12/2025 13:58

Could you give some examples?

'An eye for an eye' - meaning - take revenge on others (OT) versus 'turn the other cheek' meaning do not respond to aggression with aggression (NT)

LoopingStar · 10/12/2025 16:10

Don't ask "why were things so much better in the old days?" It's not an intelligent question (Ecclesiastes I think)

Er, it's in the Bible, wherever it came from.

No. Its about breeding livestock. Plain brown are not as valuable as speckled and striped.

Nothing it is a fairy tale

I'm an agnostic but would find it very hard to argue that there is nothing of merit in the Bible. If everyone followed at least a fraction of the messages therein, the world would be an infinitely better place. You don't have to believe in God, Jesus or angels to love thy neighbour or to refrain from judging others for example.

aWUBBAWUBBA · 10/12/2025 16:26

I love ‘For what shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his soul?’ from Mark 8. Reminds me of what’s important.

Close the book and put a seal on it until the end of the world.

that wasn’t what was asked. do we go on your atheist threads?

But being serious.
Matt 22 39 Love thy neighbour as thyself and
Luke 6 31. Do to others as you would have them do to you. always seem to be a pretty good way to lead one's life.

LaurieFairyCake · 10/12/2025 16:48

Yes, Love your neighbour as YOURSELF.

the ‘yourself’ bit is so important. YOU are worthy of love, you deserve self care. It doesn’t say ‘love others before yourself’. It says love yourself in the same way as you love others.

No need for the other 783,121 words really. Unless you are especially concerned how to treat your male and female slaves (the need for distinction has always concerned me about the intents of Christians) or the resident alien in your town.

Of course the logical conclusion (logic and the Bible, eh ?) is that to hate others, is to hate yourself.

And when you see the spittle flecked faces of patriots contorted into purple rage you do ask yourself: "Why do they hate themselves so much ?"

Oh don't be so grumpy 🤣.
As an atheist if I wish to pick and choose the good bits and ignore the rest I can.

You'll note I didn't quote (for example) Psalm 137 v9 Happy is the one who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks. simply because I don't think that's a very good guide to life.

I do find myself idly wondering if any religious text has ever bought more peace than war to the world ?

I personally think the bible is much better enjoyed - and understood - by atheists I mean talking snakes ? Where's that thread on microdosing ?
