Not heard that one before!

Could you give some examples?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 10/12/2025 14:40

'...and it had all been a dream of his wife, Pamela' Revelation 22:22

BellaBal · 10/12/2025 14:41

From psalm 27 :

I would have lost heart, unless I had believed That I would see the goodness of the Lord In the land of the living

I love this quote. Holding onto that last shred of belief can keep a person from tipping over the edge into despair. If I had no faith, I would logically become a very selfish and unpleasant person.

Mat6:5-6 "And when you may pray, you will not be as the hypocrites, because they cherish to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the broad places, that they may be seen of men; truly I say to you that they have their reward. But you, when you may pray, go into your chamber, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who [is] in secret, and your Father who is seeing in secret will reward you." (LSV)

Food eaten in secret is delicious - Proverbs.

In the parable of the ten virgins, Maidens trimming their wicks is an analogy for tending to your inner spirituality to keep the light of faith burning brightly and efficiently, in preparation for what’s spiritually ahead - it can be a long wait, and being lazy and complacent will lead to bad outcomes.

It is a very beautiful symbolism.

Also - if you have ever burned yourself on a smoky candle with a blazing long wick, it hurts like anything!

Probably something that meant more in an age without electric lightbulbs to rely on.

"Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart"

Christmas is coming, so I shall.

Do not eat too much honey for it will make you vomit. From Proverbs.

This is an accurate one.

I know. It's still funny.

If you don't explain it.

From James 4: Come near to God, and God will come near to you.

PInkyStarfish · 10/12/2025 14:58

“Depend on the Lord in whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.” ( Proverbs 16:3 ).

RedTagAlan · 10/12/2025 14:58

Gen 30:37-39 "And Jacob takes to himself a rod of fresh poplar and almond and plane-tree, and peels in them white peelings, making bare the white that [is] on the rods, and sets up the rods which he has peeled in the gutters in the watering troughs (where the flock comes to drink), in front of the flock, that they may conceive in their coming to drink;
And the flocks conceive at the rods, and the flock bears striped, speckled, and spotted ones." (LSV)

I like the subversive attitude towards women even though organised religion has tried to turn it on its head.

Women should know their place - ie - they can do whatever it is they are best at - property development, CEO of their own businesses, crafts, household management, killing enemies with tent pegs, leading armies, running churches - basically whatever you want.

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:
a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

I've lost my faith over the past few years but this verse still gives me a lot of comfort. I'm in my 'time to weep' and 'time to mourn' at the moment; but I know that will pass eventually.

You mean like in 1 Tim 2:12 ?

"But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence." (KJV)

There are lots like that.

Do not be afraid.

I love this too. There is literally nothing to be worried about- God has you.

I like it because it displays the wisdom to be found in the book.

It instructs on how to get specked or striped goats and sheep by having them mate in front of a speckled or striped background.

Ecclesiastes 3
1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6 A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
