It's a yearly quiz, at OP's work I seem to remember and has many many stages - each one harder than the next.

Usually the puzzle will reveal a word or phrase I think? OP please correct me if needed.

It genuinely is very difficult and I imagine most people participating at it team up with others to help out.

Either that or OP works at MI5 or similar and it's their bread and butter work.

So thinking out loud - grid of 10x10, 0-100 in placements,

Snooker balls values : red (1) yellow (2), green (3), brown (4), blue (5), pink (6), and black (7)
letters of alphabet = 1-26

Letters don't seem to be unique to the colours, but seem to have some correlation - unusual amount of Z's in blue for example

Going away to build a grid and play with it.

Can you give more info? Surely you weren't sent this random grid of colours and letters with no context of what you have to do with it?

I think it's snooker based. On the concept of ball values, add that many number of letters to each square. Ie, yellow is 2 points, so the first square is N+2, so would therefore be P. I've gone along the first row and first 8 squares using this code spells out PASSWORD. Going to work on the rest now.

So that red in position 92 is a Q not an O!

I'm impressed they made it exactly 100 letters

You can imagine them putting it together....

"sod it, it's only 99 letters!"

"ok, take out the word 'part' and use 'stage' instead"

...and so on until it fit the grid completely.
