Can you raise one eyebrow (without the other)? Is it possible to learn how to do this?

As per the title. I can't, and would like to be able to. As I'm getting older, there are more and more situations that I would like to (non-verbally) respond quizzically to. Raising one eyebrow would seem to be the perfect way. Is it possible to "teach yourself"??
TIA.

I can:
raise each eyebrow independently
wiggle my ears
wiggle each boob
However I have very few other skills worth mentioning to be honest.

CherryogDog · 05/12/2025 18:51

I can, both sides. Can also waggle my left ear. I can make my boobs jig about, but have to try not to subconsciously do it in public because I get some funny looks when I do it.

Dd1 can move all her toes independently, she'll sit there drumming her toes on the floor like fingers or criss-crossing her middle toes back and forth. It makes me feel queasy watching her

Calamiday · 05/12/2025 16:17

Me too, just the left one 😅

Me three!!

whatwasthatnoise · 05/12/2025 22:55

Why has nobody mentioned the Cadbury eyebrow wiggle dance yet??

I am a leftie. I can raise my right eyebrow, not the left. If I try the left, I look like some weirdo! And I don't have the energy to train my left eyebrow...

Not now Botox is doing its job. But previously I could only raise my right one. I can only curl the right side of my lip too (the elvis curl) I’m very right side dominant so I assume that’s why.

Rtaw · 05/12/2025 23:14

I couldn’t, but then I had some operations on my face (do not recommend this method!) and can no longer move one eyebrow so I can do a perfect 🤨 which I love.

BIossomtoes · 06/12/2025 00:12

I think you either can or can’t. My mum could raise just her left eyebrow and I’ve inherited it. My dad couldn’t.

ItsFridayIminLoveJS · 06/12/2025 00:24

I can't raise any.. together or seperate.. never ever been able to.
People think I've had botox because l have no frown lines.. just a very smooth forehead.. lucky l guess at my old age of 67..

cupfinalchaos · 06/12/2025 00:25

Only when my Bottox has worn off quicker one side than the other!

Yes, I taught myself how during maths when I was young, by just moving the arch of my eyebrow up and down with my hand until I figured out how to move the right muscle to do it.

Just tried this and discovered I CAN do it on my left side! All these years (70, no less) of finely-honed sarcasm and I've been missing out the visual zinger.

DramaAlpaca · 06/12/2025 00:33

Yes I can, the left one. It means I can do a look that has grown men quaking in their boots. It's extremely satisfying.

I had a twat of a boss once, who was being even more twatty than usual, and completely unreasonable. I did the eyebrow raise on him, for the first time ever, and he backed right down immediately. Twas quite funny, actually, though of course I didn't let him see that.

It also works on teenage sons and the DH. I don't do it often, but they know I mean business and am not to be messed with when I do.

I watched Star Trek a lot too as a young woman. I can do the Spock eyebrow with my right but not left. I can also do the Vulcan "live long and prosper" sign by splitting my fingers but Im better with the left hand.

Justputsomeyoghurtonit · 06/12/2025 02:14

I can raise my right eyebrow. But I think it's because I have astigmatism in my left eye. And I try to focus wonkily sometimes.

That's easy! Both hands!

Though now I think about it, I found out that I was hypermobile last year, possibly it's connected...

MagnoliaTreeBlossom · 06/12/2025 03:23

Definitely able to teach yourself this. Like some PP, I also spent time mastering this as a child because Spock did it on Star Trek. Left side did it naturally but right needed trained.

I can raise and lower them separately.and can lower the right and raise the left at the same time but not the other way round.

I can also separate my fingers to make the Vulcan greeting, "live longer and prosper" naturally with my left hand and with concentration and conscious effort for my right hand. 🖖 My talents are endless! 😀

GarlicRound · 06/12/2025 04:15

Impressive, @MagnoliaTreeBlossom. Can you do the Vulcan Neck Pinch? That would actually be useful!

MagnoliaTreeBlossom · 06/12/2025 05:11

No, I just learned the eyebrows and greeting before moving on to trying to do the owl eyes with upside down hands. 😀
Couldn't do them as a child and just tried again and still can't. 😂 🦉 Photo is of David Bowie doing them.

Andylion · 06/12/2025 05:20

I can do the left eye, but I can’t roll my tongue, as in, the two sides rolled towards each other. In my family, people can either raise one eyebrow, or roll the tongue. No-one can do both.

trakehner · 06/12/2025 05:32

I have always been able to raise my right eyebrow (untrained 😂) , high enough to be quite the crowd drawer during my younger years. Interestingly (or not) I’m also right handed, so bucking the trend there.

These days I only use my super power to test if my Botox is wearing off 😂

Pricelessadvice · 06/12/2025 06:49

Yes, I can raise them independently. I can do them alternately like those kids on the Cadbury’s advert 😀
I thought everyone could??

DinoLil · 06/12/2025 06:56

I can, with both. I can make them 'dance' independently if I want to! Yes, I'm odd...

Interesting. Not something ive ever tried before but I can only curl my right lip. If I try my.left it looks like ive got a bad smell.

teaandtoastwouldbenice · 06/12/2025 12:29

I taught myself as a kid - inspired by sally from home and away. Physically hold down the eyebrow you don’t want to raise while you lift the other and repeat and repeat x 1000, then you’ll be able to just frown with that one and raise the other, repeat x 1000 and gradually you’ll do it. It’s also effective at making one ear wiggle. My childhood was quite boring.

I really wish I hadn’t done this, my eyebrows are wonky.
