Can you raise one eyebrow (without the other)? Is it possible to learn how to do this?

As per the title. I can't, and would like to be able to. As I'm getting older, there are more and more situations that I would like to (non-verbally) respond quizzically to. Raising one eyebrow would seem to be the perfect way. Is it possible to "teach yourself"??
TIA.

Another one yes! Left eyebrow and have done it forever. Not sure if it can be taught 😂

ohyesido · 05/12/2025 16:41

It can be taught but it takes a long time. Tim Curry did it perfectly in the Rocky Horror Picture Show

SparkFinder · 05/12/2025 16:45

Another leftie only! I didn't know they could be trained, I thought it was one of those god given talents 😂. This is now my 2026 resolution to be able to do the other and waggle them at my teens.

Talltreesbythelake · 05/12/2025 16:47

It shouldn't take long. Hold down one eyebrow gently as you waggle both and you should be able to feel which muscles are moving on each side. I can do each eyebrow independently and twitch my ears. Not that this skill has helped in life!

Flicitytricity · 05/12/2025 16:50

Oh God, I didn't know that everyone couldn't do it😅
No idea about training yourself to do it, it's as easy as scratching my nose for me.
I've never thought about it, but if asked, would have assumed everyone could do it!

Yay, I have a talent ( at last)😁

Fibrous · 05/12/2025 16:52

Another leftie here too. I was born cynical.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 05/12/2025 16:56

My left only independently. Can raise both together but the right.

Fluffyslipons · 05/12/2025 16:57

Yes. I taught myself when I was 14. Hold one eyebrow (same eyebrow every time you practise) and raise the other, eventually you will develop the muscle. in my defence it was the mid 1980s and I didn’t have much of a social life.

I can now raise both eyebrows independently, which is a good trick when the children are bored. My children can waggle their ears, although that appears to be a natural skill (DC2 was surprised to learn that not everyone can do that).

Giggorata · 05/12/2025 16:58

Yes and yes.
I seem always to have been able to raise the right hand one and taught myself to do the left hand one as a teen, using the same methods already mentioned.

Now for the ears… 😀

WrylyAmused · 05/12/2025 16:08

I can't do it, but an ex girlfriend told me she taught herself this as a teen - apparently involved many hours pulling faces in a mirror until she figured out which muscles to move and how to isolate them.

So apparently yes.

I might be your ex girlfriend…….

Davros · 05/12/2025 17:00

I can do both but years ago I could only do one. I worked hard on the other, who needed to pay attention at school anyway?

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 05/12/2025 17:12

ResusciAnnie · 05/12/2025 16:13

I can on one side but not the other.

Can you make clockwise circles with your right foot (ankle) and draw a 6 in the air with your right hand without your foot stopping?

Thats easy. Both my dp and i are trying whilst waiting for the child at gymnasyics 😁

evtheria · 05/12/2025 16:27

It will take rigorous practice, intense focus, and good self discipline, but I believe in you.

😂 tell me the payoff from all that hard work is worth it? Will I be able to delight anyone from ages 1-99?

RedRosie · 05/12/2025 17:15

Awwwww. Nice memories. My Grandad could do this, and waggle his ears.

twiddleit · 05/12/2025 17:16

This. I taught myself when I was a teen.

I held down my left eyebrow whilst raising my right, over many months. It does work. Can only do it with my right eyebrow though.

janeandmarysmum · 05/12/2025 17:18

Abracadabrador · 05/12/2025 16:16

Yes, I taught myself how during maths when I was young, by just moving the arch of my eyebrow up and down with my hand until I figured out how to move the right muscle to do it.

I should've used my double history lessons to learn.

Another lefty who taught herself as a teenager here!

Yourinmyspot · 05/12/2025 17:21

No, never been able to do it. My sister can, I can wiggle my ears and do them one at at a time but a raised ear dosen’t have the same effect as a raised eyebrow!

rainydecembernights · 05/12/2025 17:22

Yes, both, and move my ears too.

Horrace · 05/12/2025 17:22

Yep. The left only. My right doesn't move. Not even if I try to move both together. So I can only do the Roger Moore move.
My daughter can do the Rountrees Fruit Pastels move.

WearyAuldWumman · 05/12/2025 17:23

My mum could. She could also wiggle her ear and her toes.

i learned to wiggle my toes, but can no longer manage after a foot op.

silkysoft · 05/12/2025 17:24

Only the left one but I cannot even raise that currently due to having botox

MirrorMirror1247 · 05/12/2025 17:25

I taught myself to raise the left one. Can't do it with the right, but that's fine if you only want to raise one! I don't remember exactly how old I was when I did it but I'd definitely reached adulthood.

Mathsbabe · 05/12/2025 17:26

I can wiggle both ears and am now committed to learning how to raise one eyebrow. Learning a new skill is good for us, yes?
