What hack has blown your mind?

On the weekend I burnt some black felt onto my iron and it was impossible to get off. I tried spraying it with cleaner, scrubbing it with a sponge and scraping it when hot but nothing worked.

I was about to give up when I learnt that if you pick up a piece of paracetamol or ibuprofen with some tweezers and then wipe it all over the hot iron, the marks literally disappear.

My mind has been blown.

My mind was also blown when I learnt on Mumsnet that the stripes on a super king duvet go horizontally not vertically 🤣 I just thought none of my duvet covers fit 💀

What other things like this have blown peoples minds? I can’t keep living without all these amazing hacks 😂

This is so bloomin obvious, why did I never think of it?

But surely that will only ever work well if your kitchen is quite cold overnight, as it would just make the milk go off during a warm summer? But maybe most of you only have porridge in the winter, and you don't have an aga type thing that keeps your kitchen overly warm constantly throughout the colder months? I love porridge all year round 😋

You can leave it in the fridge. The oats will still soak up the milk irrespective of its surroundings

Sadly we have a very budget machine...

what about loading the machine at night but turning it on in the morning?

I think my life may have been changed by the Tupperware one! Just have one (or two!?) sizes rather than 5!!

But surely the width of spaghetti is usually very similar, the length of the spaghetti makes no difference to that measure - unless the length was half as long as usual, in which case you might want to measure two 'hole in spoon' sizes to give you the equivalent mass of the spaghetti, but I have to admit that maths was never my strongest subject? 🙈

Pondering the maths

Or…wash covers inside out, when dry put one hand in each upper corner like a glove puppet, grab two bottom corners of the duvet through the fabric and shake shake shake. The cover will fall down over the duvet and reverse itself to show the right side up.

This doesn’t work for me as the duvet is bigger than me and it might work for some of the duvet but the last bit is bunched on the floor and I have tried standing on the bed

My arm span is also smaller than the span of the duvet and it seems to just stop at the bunched up part at the top middle bit as well

using a tin opener to lift up the lid on a jar
ingenious hack
either that or take a breath and then as you are breathing out open the jar

I always think this is the most pointless one suggested in these threads, it takes longer and doesn't actually achieve anything. Why open up a pillowcase and put stuff in it? Then have to tip it all out again. If you just tuck the pillowcases in with the folded duvet cover, that achieves the same thing. It's not like they move about in the cupboard.

I keep my pillowcases in a stack in one drawer, all together, and my duvet covers in another drawer. When I change the duvet cover, I choose the clean one and just take the matching pillowcase out of the stack. Honestly it’s not that hard.

Stripes on a duvet one doesn't always work. Some have stitched squares. That will blow your mind even further. 🤣

The other one people quote as 'fact' is that the hole in a past serving spoon is an individual serving size for spaghetti. No, it isn't. Different spoons have different sized holes. And spaghetti comes in different lengths.

Yes, the Grinch shat in my cornflakes this morning. 🤣

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

The grinch comment has actually blown my mind and I shall be using it 🤣👌

May be obvious to some…but when you put fresh cut flowers in a vase, change the water everyday to refresh it. Makes them last a lot longer. I used to just change the water every few days when I remembered or when it looked a bit murky but a florist told me to do it everyday and it really works!

Flowerpower63 · 02/12/2025 05:52

More of a tip than a hack…but get a duvet cover the size up from your bed size. So much more comfortable especially when you’re sharing a bed and need that extra bit of duvet. We have a king size bed and super king duvet and it’s great not fighting over the covers 😄

princessbear80 · 02/12/2025 05:58

@FairKoala You can dangle it over the bannister so it doesn’t all pool on the floor.

TrickyD · 02/12/2025 06:12

My duvet changing hack is let your DH do it. Mine does, no idea what technique he uses and I don’t care.

If you mean putting the sheet, pillow cases and duvet cover into 1 pillow case me too
I read it on here and thought no way - but tis true and awesome

Say more?

Has anyone shared how to wash a greasy tupperware yet?

Squirt a bit of washing up liquid and some water into the greasy box. Put a bit of kitchen roll in. Lid on. Shake vigorously. Completely clean and no grease. This is now standard practice in my house.

I use this hack for getting rid of tomato based stains on tupperware but will use it with greasy tubs too. Thanks!

I don't think it's the most pointless idea ever but I do prefer your tip actually as with the pillow case I find you end up with a sack that doesn't sit neatly on the shelf.

Oh I see.
My linen cupboard is very tidy already, so I can't see the point in this at all.
I can find anything I want in it within seconds.

Do you either live on your own, or are you the only one who puts and retrieves things from the linen cupard? I ask, because with a household of teenagers who all washed and changed their own sheets, our airing cupboard soon used to look more like a table at a jumble sale than an everything ironed, and stored nicely, shelf in an M&S store! These days our clean bedding is kept in a velvet ottoman at the end of the bed!

landlordhell · 02/12/2025 06:28

I’ve used the pillowcase storage thing for a few years now since reading g on here; it’s great. I love knowing it’s all together and just pull one ‘parcel’ out.

What if you don’t have a shelf? I have no airing cupboard .I have an IKEA, zip up, under bed storage box.

Trying that.

Potatoelephant · 02/12/2025 06:37

You can adjust the height of the top rack of your dishwasher about an inch up or down, to fit bigger items when needed.

I’ve drawn a smiley face on the bottom left corner of the duvet so we know where the bottom (short edge) is.

Just count the squares…

CuttingBackSomeMore · 02/12/2025 06:41

I store the clean, folded set of sheet, duvet cover and pillow cases between the mattress and the base of each bed they belong to. Makes things very easy.

butternut123 · 02/12/2025 06:42

If you’re struggling to take the lid off a jar, use a sharp knife and put a small hole in the lid. It takes all the air pressure out and opens so easily afterwards

Just firmly tap the side of the lid on a hard surface like the floor. Vacuum pops.
