What hack has blown your mind?

MindblownMia · 01/12/2025 14:36

On the weekend I burnt some black felt onto my iron and it was impossible to get off. I tried spraying it with cleaner, scrubbing it with a sponge and scraping it when hot but nothing worked.

I was about to give up when I learnt that if you pick up a piece of paracetamol or ibuprofen with some tweezers and then wipe it all over the hot iron, the marks literally disappear.

My mind has been blown.

My mind was also blown when I learnt on Mumsnet that the stripes on a super king duvet go horizontally not vertically 🤣 I just thought none of my duvet covers fit 💀

What other things like this have blown peoples minds? I can’t keep living without all these amazing hacks 😂

You can also use a plug in timer.

Wouldn't work with mine as it would turn itself off & lose all the settings.

MoonWoman69 · 01/12/2025 23:43

Elbow Grease degreasing spray removes stains from clothes/dishcloths immediately! I spilt curry down my top last week and went into the kitchen, wiped the excess curry off, sprayed on EG and the stain vanished before my eyes! I've used it on all sorts and it's brilliant at stain removal.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 01/12/2025 23:43

Painting the spindles on the stairs, I put a plastic glove under an old wool glove and just painted with my hands rubbing up and down. It took a fraction of the time. I'm going to try this for skirting boards next time.

Glamba · 01/12/2025 23:45

Also loving the green bean one.

Mine is a gadget rather than a hack but it's worth bending the rules for. It's a safety tin opener. It doesn't cut into the metal on the top of the can or round the sides, it unpeels the top piece from the can leaving only blunt edges. The top sits so beautifully snug after unpeeling that at first you don't think it's worked, but it has, and the lid can be completely removed and can be neatly replaced should you wish.

Like the PP who recommended it, we bought one for DD as she went off to uni, and then had to buy ourselves one as we missed it.

Rolling method: my mind is once again BLOWN 🤣

I will try this again tomorrow. I gave up on it as I kept ending up with a duvet croissant! 🤣🤣

It's a Christmas one. I read on here a few years ago. Put tinsel on the tree before the lights,. push it right to the back of the branches. You can't see it but it makes the tree have a beautiful glow with the lights bouncing off it.

It does!!

Keep the roots of scallions in water & they’ll keep growing

Whaaaat?

Then it has to sit in the machine starting to smell damp for half the night and until I'm back from the school run as I don't want the dryer on when I'm out. This way it finishes and I can chuck it in the dryer.

If you use liquid detergent in the washing machine the washing smells musty if left in the machine/basket very quickly.

If you use a powder detergent it doesn't get musty for ages - amazing!

Whoa!
How did I get to the age of 69 before finding out about the "rolling the duvet in the cover" hack!

Amazing.

Now can someone explain what is meant by the duvet in the pillow case one.

Now can someone explain what is meant by the duvet in the pillow case one

I think it refers to storing your bed linen once laundered, Insert the duvet cover, the sheet(s) and any remaining pillow cases for that particular set in to one of the pillow cases, making a small packet. Store in your linen cupboard like that. Then when you need to make that bed, you just grab the whole thing. No searching around for bits that match. It works really well!

An alternative to this is to acquire beds with built-in storage drawers, and store each set of linen used for that particular bed in them.

Interesting! Do you dampen the rubber glove?

Works on rugs and carpets too.

Glamba · 01/12/2025 23:53

Letthemeatgateau · 01/12/2025 23:41

I always think this is the most pointless one suggested in these threads, it takes longer and doesn't actually achieve anything. Why open up a pillowcase and put stuff in it? Then have to tip it all out again. If you just tuck the pillowcases in with the folded duvet cover, that achieves the same thing. It's not like they move about in the cupboard.

Yes I did this for a few years then realised the way my boarding school did in the 80s was far more efficient. They folded the duvet into a strip and wrapped it round the sheet and pillow cases, like making a flat sausage roll. Makes a much smaller, neater rectangular parcel. I can see why you wouldn't even need to do that, but I do.

Or…wash covers inside out, when dry put one hand in each upper corner like a glove puppet, grab two bottom corners of the duvet through the fabric and shake shake shake. The cover will fall down over the duvet and reverse itself to show the right side up.

I’ve done this for so many years now! I think I got it from a magazine called “Best” in the mid to late 1980s.
It’s the only way to do quilt covers!😁

Daygloboo · 02/12/2025 00:03

Sillysoggyspaniel · 01/12/2025 14:37

So mine is so simple that every day I'm amazed at the difference it makes. When you come downstairs in the morning take a load of washing with you and put it straight on. Means I basically never have to look at washing waiting to be done now.

Ive started doing this recently funnily enough. It works !!

Oh I see.
My linen cupboard is very tidy already, so I can't see the point in this at all.
I can find anything I want in it within seconds.

If you buy one of those great long stalks of sprouts, they keep fresh for at least a week if you just lean the whole thing up against the wall outside the back door.

Just had to google scallions! Thanks for the hack though - will try this with my spring onions 😂

Your spring onions ARE scallions! That's what we always called them in the north east.

If you can never find scissors in a garage, garden shed, utility, or laundry room; buy a long retractable dog lead and tie the handle to a peg or a fixed point up at shoulder or head level. Then attach the pair of scissors to the clip which would usually attach to the dog’s collar.

Then you have pull-out scissors that can always be found, that you can use in a large area of the room, and when you’ve finished, they just retract back up to the peg for next time.

I usually buy a neon yellow lead and bright orange scissors so they are easily visible.

Edited

Wow, this is excellent. I am going to do this in every single room.

And one for the tape measure in the garage too.

And a pen. And sellotape.

All the things!

You can restore corroded chrome by rubbing it with tinfoil.
I had some very badly corroded taps that had no shine, were green in places and had little blisters of corrosion on them and the tinfoil brought them up like new.
It's like it sandpapers away the blisters and then re-chromes them.
I'd did the taps, towel rail, shower curtain rail and toilet roll holder.

Porridge - I realised that you can use the overnight oats method to speed up porridge making in the morning. Put the oats and the milk in the pan the night before, then it's half the time to make your porridge in the morning.

But that's not a hack; it's just common sense. It's how porridge has been made for eons. My mother did it throughout my childhood (1950s/60s), presumably because she'd learnt it from her mother.

Sichsehnen · 02/12/2025 00:51

After a dinner party if your oven is still warm when you're washing up the stuff that doesn't fit in the dishwasher - just shove everything clean but wet in the warm ( but off) oven instead of hand drying and wiping. Everything is dry and ready to tidy away the next morning.

Works with the base of a bunch of celery too. New leaves start sprouting from the middle. It’s not exactly quick, mind, so bring some patience.

I do a version of this because I always like a couple or three base sheets (have a bit of an old lumpy mattress that needs retiring) and it’s all too much to fit in one pillowcase. So using the duvet cover like a folded men’s wallet around everything else works better for me. Same principle of keeping all of the linen for one bed stored together.

I tried a new cleaning tip recently and that was the shaving foam on mattress one. You just apply foaming shaving cream to a stain, gently scrub with a soft brush, let it sit for 15–30 minutes, then wipe it clean with a damp cloth. Use plain basic shaving foam btw not anything with a blue colour! It does work!

Didn’t blow my mind exactly but using shaving cream to clean the floor around the base of the loo if you have young boys visiting takes away any urinal whiff.

Grease stains on clothes - just rub a bit of washing up.liquid on the stain before putting it in the washing machine, grease disappears in the wash
