What hack has blown your mind?

On the weekend I burnt some black felt onto my iron and it was impossible to get off. I tried spraying it with cleaner, scrubbing it with a sponge and scraping it when hot but nothing worked.

I was about to give up when I learnt that if you pick up a piece of paracetamol or ibuprofen with some tweezers and then wipe it all over the hot iron, the marks literally disappear.

My mind has been blown.

My mind was also blown when I learnt on Mumsnet that the stripes on a super king duvet go horizontally not vertically 🤣 I just thought none of my duvet covers fit 💀

What other things like this have blown peoples minds? I can’t keep living without all these amazing hacks 😂

Not exactly a tip or hack, more a gadget, but Lakeland do a cling film holder that dispenses cling film however I think you have to buy their slightly pricey cling film due to sizing. I've also seen el cheapo versions on Shein, Temu, AliExpress. It makes me furious when that happens, ditto finding sellotape & packing tape ends that have disappeared. Need to get dispensers for them!

@Sofasu we have a Bacofoil refillable cling film dispenser, just bought from the supermarket. Plastic blade which you slam shut and is much more reliable than the jagged edge on a normal box. I would guess it's at least 10 years old. Not radically expensive to refill. Ours is a bit painty as we use cling film to wrap decorating brushes, but it is still going strong.

I'm going to get one of these! Thanks for posting

I read yesterday on BBC Food the proper way to make a boiled egg, which blew me away a bit.

You put an egg(s) in cold water and bring to the boil, then turn off and leave for 12 minutes before serving (or making into egg mayonnaise etc). It prevents the yellow centres from going hard and grey and has much more flavour. Genius (for me anyway!).

Did you actually do it though??

Yes I did - it was so much better. The eggs were almost solid but slightly ‘moist’ and tasted a lot better. Game changer!

I've tried it today but it didn't make any difference, perhaps I got it wrong?
It seemed to me that swapping the laces didn't do anything, the final bow just twizzles back. My laces came undone as usual. I try not to do double bows as I can't undo them.

Courtesy of my dancing offspring who learned this trick backstage:
Spray the laces with hairspray. It makes them tacky and less likely to come undone. Works with ribbons as well.

I'm after tips on clingfilm.
When you get a bit that's not unwound and your main bit is getting smaller and smaller?
I know you're supposed to hook the tube in the box at the sides but so often it doesn't work and I end up throwing a roll away.

Lakeland clingfilm is the best.

And a pin prick in the fat end of the egg shell before cooking means the shell is super easy to remove. It disrupts the membrane which keeps it sticking to the egg.

There was a post upthread - leave it on the roll and pull out to cover bowl (or whatever) then twist the box and cut just below the twist with scissors. Leave the twisty-knot thing on the roll for next time. Tried it and it's genius (no good, however, when I was home colouring my hair as I got in a dreadful mess at the back of my head!)

The hack with rolling up and unrolling the quilt blows my mind because I feel it should only work in theory and not reality. But it works! (*) And I can change the covers on the king-size quilts singlehanded.

(*) Well, it works best if the opening in the quilt cover is wide enough, ideally the full width of the quilt. Too narrow and it's a struggle.

The best clingfilm I've found is from Costco. The downside is the hugeness of the box which takes some storing but its much less stressful than any of the supermarket clingfilms I've tried

This reminded me that my mother had a gadget to put the pin prick in her eggs. She had a lot of gadgets at one point....

I've seen it! The electric egg boilers (another one of my must have dust collector* *gadgets) has an egg pricker. I'm wary though that I'll just end up smashing the egg with one as I'm a Heavy Handed Hannah.

If you don't have small kids around and you hate child proof pill lids and struggle getting them open each time, you can pop that spinny part off and underneath should just be a regular cap.

Is there also something about turning
it upside down to open the first time?
