What hack has blown your mind?

On the weekend I burnt some black felt onto my iron and it was impossible to get off. I tried spraying it with cleaner, scrubbing it with a sponge and scraping it when hot but nothing worked.

I was about to give up when I learnt that if you pick up a piece of paracetamol or ibuprofen with some tweezers and then wipe it all over the hot iron, the marks literally disappear.

My mind has been blown.

My mind was also blown when I learnt on Mumsnet that the stripes on a super king duvet go horizontally not vertically 🤣 I just thought none of my duvet covers fit 💀

What other things like this have blown peoples minds? I can’t keep living without all these amazing hacks 😂

This morning I learnt that to take all the hair and dog hair of my daughters primark 'wool' smart coat (actually 100% polyester) that a rubber glove worked a million times better than a lint remover.

I vigorously dragged the rubber glove over the fabric and all the dog hair came off. I presume it was friction.

(covered in dog hair from lying in the bed with the dogs before taking off her coat I think!)

Interesting! Do you dampen the rubber glove?

If you can never find scissors in a garage, garden shed, utility, or laundry room; buy a long retractable dog lead and tie the handle to a peg or a fixed point up at shoulder or head level. Then attach the pair of scissors to the clip which would usually attach to the dog’s collar.

Then you have pull-out scissors that can always be found, that you can use in a large area of the room, and when you’ve finished, they just retract back up to the peg for next time.

I usually buy a neon yellow lead and bright orange scissors so they are easily visible.

Whoah! I’m trying that one, sad individual that I am. But I like green beans.

Even better, cut the corner off the bag first and use the hole to fill it up with water so you can rinse them off. Then shake them into one corner and slice the tops off.

PauliesWalnuts · 01/12/2025 16:59

If you drop the iron on the carpet and leave a scorch mark you can SANDPAPER it off.

FYI @WinterHangingBasket the hole in the wooden spoon is because it's a spoon for stirring risotto. It allows the rice to pass through and agitate together resulting in a smoother, creamer risotto.

No! It was magic!

Then it has to sit in the machine starting to smell damp for half the night and until I'm back from the school run as I don't want the dryer on when I'm out. This way it finishes and I can chuck it in the dryer.

No, you use the time delay function to set it to come on and finish at, say, 7am.

Sadly we have a very budget machine...

Pull your tights up without laddering them by running your hands under water, shaking off the excess and then just smoothing the tights up your legs from ankle to thigh. Is magical 🎩 🐰 🤗

Gardener82 · 01/12/2025 18:09

That if a roll of tinfoil loses its end by getting torn you can rub it with a piece of ripped of scrunched bit of tinfoil to fix it.

Ihateboris · 01/12/2025 18:19

Spraying hairspray onto a collar acts as a protective barrier to prevent makeup transferring. The tip is to spray it on and let it dry for 5 minutes. Completely blew me away!

You can also use a plug in timer.

It's a Christmas one. I read on here a few years ago. Put tinsel on the tree before the lights,. push it right to the back of the branches. You can't see it but it makes the tree have a beautiful glow with the lights bouncing off it.

MostlyGhostly · 01/12/2025 23:10

Ring marks from mugs on wooden surfaces can be removed with an iron and a white cloth. I felt like a master French polisher when I sorted out our dark wood sideboard with an old tee shirt and an iron, finished off with a bit of Mr Sheen.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 01/12/2025 23:24

Whoa!
How did I get to the age of 69 before finding out about the "rolling the duvet in the cover" hack!

Amazing.

Now can someone explain what is meant by the duvet in the pillow case one.

I often leave wet washing in the machine for hours at a time because I've been out and it has never been a problem. It's never smelt bad either.

The only time I ever get musty smelling washing is it I put them in the tumble dryer and they don't fully dry, then I forget about them and discover them a couple of days later.

Porridge - I realised that you can use the overnight oats method to speed up porridge making in the morning. Put the oats and the milk in the pan the night before, then it's half the time to make your porridge in the morning.

I think you have just fixed overnight oats for me! thank you.

Better for your knife not to cut through packaging. Just grab them all in one hand loosely and let them all drop down to the cutting board, lay them down & cut one end then either slice or do it the other way to cut off the other end.

far less time to do than try to explain 🙇🏻‍♀️

I don't leave the washing machine on when im
out either.

i used to think my friend was nuts, not leaving her WM on if she went out, but about 2 years ago our local fire service did an awareness thing & said they attend almost as many fires due to WM's as dryers!

HiCandles · 01/12/2025 23:38

It is not mandatory to keep all takeaway containers. You can decide to only keep the type you want. We used to have so many assorted shapes and sizes and finding a matching lid was a mission. So annoying when you want to just chuck a bit of leftover food in to be faced with a disorganised mountain, and the cupboard was a mess.
Then I culled all but a certain type. Now we can always find the right lid because there are literally none of the wrong lid. And everything stacks neatly.

I hate with a passion hoovering the stairs so I wear a rubber glove and go round in circle motions to clear dust and hair off them

I didn’t, but this is such a good idea!! I can’t believe I’ve never done this before!

I always think this is the most pointless one suggested in these threads, it takes longer and doesn't actually achieve anything. Why open up a pillowcase and put stuff in it? Then have to tip it all out again. If you just tuck the pillowcases in with the folded duvet cover, that achieves the same thing. It's not like they move about in the cupboard.
