What hack has blown your mind?

On the weekend I burnt some black felt onto my iron and it was impossible to get off. I tried spraying it with cleaner, scrubbing it with a sponge and scraping it when hot but nothing worked.

I was about to give up when I learnt that if you pick up a piece of paracetamol or ibuprofen with some tweezers and then wipe it all over the hot iron, the marks literally disappear.

My mind has been blown.

My mind was also blown when I learnt on Mumsnet that the stripes on a super king duvet go horizontally not vertically 🤣 I just thought none of my duvet covers fit 💀

What other things like this have blown peoples minds? I can’t keep living without all these amazing hacks 😂

Then it has to sit in the machine starting to smell damp for half the night and until I'm back from the school run as I don't want the dryer on when I'm out. This way it finishes and I can chuck it in the dryer.

Does your washing machine not have a Delay Start or similar where you programme in the time you want your washing to be finished, then switch it on the night before and it will automatically start itself so that your washing is finished at X o’clock? All mine have had that and I find it very useful.

Painting the spindles on the stairs, I put a plastic glove under an old wool glove and just painted with my hands rubbing up and down. It took a fraction of the time. I'm going to try this for skirting boards next time.

Can I ask what type of paint you used please?

Ring marks from mugs on wooden surfaces can be removed with an iron and a white cloth. I felt like a master French polisher when I sorted out our dark wood sideboard with an old tee shirt and an iron, finished off with a bit of Mr Sheen.

Same principle but we use a hairdryer. The rings disappear from our coffee table like magic!

Opening jars - give the side of the lid a sharp thwack with a wooden spoon

They won’t go smelly within one day.

I use the timer on my machine. We’re on cheaper night time electric tariff.
Ready to hang up when I get up in the morning.

@Lougle so the milk is left out of the fridge overnight? Is that….ok?

Whoa!
How did I get to the age of 69 before finding out about the "rolling the duvet in the cover" hack!

Amazing.

Now can someone explain what is meant by the duvet in the pillow case one.

Put the duvet cover sheet and pillow cases inside one pillow case so its all together ive done it for years just means you grab one "package" and everything is in it ready to make the bed

jumpingthehighjump · 02/12/2025 07:23

I've never understood this quilt in pillowcase thing.

I fold my kingsize quilt cover and when I'm on the last fold, I put in the pillowcases and it's done.

I use any colour sheets so they don't go inside.

Porridge - I realised that you can use the overnight oats method to speed up porridge making in the morning. Put the oats and the milk in the pan the night before, then it's half the time to make your porridge in the morning.

Or you can just make overnight oats and mix leave in the fridge soaking with milk, then it requires no cooking at all.

This morning I learnt that to take all the hair and dog hair of my daughters primark 'wool' smart coat (actually 100% polyester) that a rubber glove worked a million times better than a lint remover.

I vigorously dragged the rubber glove over the fabric and all the dog hair came off. I presume it was friction.

(covered in dog hair from lying in the bed with the dogs before taking off her coat I think!)

I use a rubber glove on stairs too, great for dog hair, I think that was an Aggie and Kim tip!

OldWave · 02/12/2025 07:32

Mine is if you have glass or a mirror that has a sticker stuck on it, rub some olive oil over the sticker & it will miraculously be easy to remove!
My original favourite hack was taught to me by my mother: if you spill candle wax on your clothes, put a piece of paper bag over the wax stain, iron on top of it, and the wax will magically transfer to the paper bag! However I no longer really encounter candle wax as often as I used to. Nor irons. Still, maybe a tip for the holiday season.

Grease stains on clothes - just rub a bit of washing up.liquid on the stain before putting it in the washing machine, grease disappears in the wash

Does this work with old oil stains?? Just noticed some on a favourite top 😩

Oh no, I put it in the fridge and then heat it up in the morning. It's no different to using milk from the fridge in the porridge in terms of milk heating speed but because the oats have soaked up the milk overnight, it's much quicker to turn into porridge.

I like it warm.

I always think this is the most pointless one suggested in these threads, it takes longer and doesn't actually achieve anything. Why open up a pillowcase and put stuff in it? Then have to tip it all out again. If you just tuck the pillowcases in with the folded duvet cover, that achieves the same thing. It's not like they move about in the cupboard.

My sheets get all mixed up and separated in the airing cupboard so I can never find matching pillow cases to duvet covers etc. unless I keep the whole set packed neatly together in one pillow case.

Or just the morning before so it's finished by the night? 😁

Sugargliderwombat · 02/12/2025 07:43

Niche for teachers. Child scribbled all over my whiteboard with a sharpie. Tried everything to remove in a blind panic. Colouring over it with a whiteboard pen worked! Just came straight off.

NamechangeRugby · 02/12/2025 07:46

Should black mould marks ever appear on the grouting or sealant around the bath/shower, make up a paste of bleach and bicarbonate of soda. Dip in shredded lengths of cotton wool. Place sodden cotton wool strip along length of sealant or grouting to be treated and leave overnight or 24 hours (depending how bad it is & make sure everyone knows to avoid it, so it doesn't get on their clothes etc). When you peel cotton wool off miraculously it is all white underneath! (best to patch test just incase first).

I put hot water from the kettle that makes my morning cuppa into rolled oats. They are ready when I get back from walking my dog an hour later.

AnneButNotHathaway · 02/12/2025 07:54

Mine is that you can unstuck a picture from a glass by putting it into a freezer for a couple of hours! Worked with some old family photos just fine.

Bestfootforward11 · 02/12/2025 07:38

I’d try it. Put washing up liquid on the stain & really work it in. (If not delicate, I then pour really hot water on to the area & rub, or brush with stiff brush, like on jeans) spray with stain remover, Then put liquid laundry soap directly on the stain & wash as hot as fabric allows

If you get tomato stains on clothes, wash as usual & dry in full sunlight, stains disappear

Flowerpower63 · 02/12/2025 05:52

More of a tip than a hack…but get a duvet cover the size up from your bed size. So much more comfortable especially when you’re sharing a bed and need that extra bit of duvet. We have a king size bed and super king duvet and it’s great not fighting over the covers 😄

Edited

I think 'hack' is just a new name for a tip. I agree with your tip but I'm glad I sleep alone in my standard double bed with a double duvet. I couldn't cope if I had to wrestle with anything bigger!

TartanTwit · 02/12/2025 07:58

if you have fairly low tog single duvets you can wash them in their covers, they don't tend to come loose I've found.

Trimming green beans - keep them in the packet and just cut through chopping all the ends off in one go

Nice one!
