Anecdote about wanking off three men in a random wood in Edinburgh or something. Everyone laughed hysterically.

Is it just me or have TV chat shows gone really downhill? Confused

'Vulgar humour' is subjective. You can do it cleverly, or not cleverly. I don't mind it when it's done knowingly and cleverly. To me it is then not vulgar - it's something else. It's not my favourite type of thing, but I don't find it 'vile'/'vulgar'/shocking etc.

Same here. Which is why I don’t like MM. she doesn’t do it cleverly in my view, just tells creepy stories.

Yes, but it’s no longer shocking. It’s just gross and boring.

She usually successfully shocks stuffy American guests who can't believe what they're hearing. GN books her for a reason.

ExpressiveDecorations · 29/11/2025 16:01

I used to think she was amusing and shocking but harmless then I read her memoir and try and avoid watching her whenever possible now. In the book she describes incidents where she has encountered men who are attempting to sexually assault her and gone "oh might as well enjoy it" and given them oral sex. So no doubt encouraging them to do it again to other women. The chapter describing the death of Jacqueline Du Pre is shocking too.

Shocks? Or appalls? They are different things.

cardibach · 29/11/2025 16:04

@ExpressiveDecorations i wasn’t going to read it anyway, but if she’s shocking about lovely Jacqueline du Pre I’m even more opposed!

PurpleSky300 · 29/11/2025 16:08

I have never understood her appeal and never believed a single one of her shock 'stories'.
Why would anyone want to know about the sex life of a homely, overweight, uncouth 84-year-old for God's sake?
It wouldn't surprise me if she hadn't had a sniff of sex in 40 years, she is just trying to get attention.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 29/11/2025 16:24

dont know why people find her funny, she’s just a rude old bat.

sittingonabeach · 29/11/2025 16:36

I have watched her travel programmes and for the most part really enjoyed them and found them interesting.

I watched GN but really don't like it when she is a guest on there. She is vile and vulgar on there. It's like she thinks as an older woman she can get away with saying anything (and to be fair it looks like on that show she can). But I can't imagine a male guest (of whatever age and sexual orientation) would be able to recount similar anecdotes. I don't want anyone, male or female, being so crass. We need to move on, both men and women

Fallshealing · 29/11/2025 16:37

I just watched the GN show and after reading this thread was expecting her to be awful but she wasn't. She's just expressive and will praise actors/films as she clearly loves the arts, especially stage shows. The bit about Mamma Mia didn't come across rude, she'd already said in a previous GN show that she thought the film was dreadful so when it was mentioned again her face said it all as she has a very expressive face. She wasn't criticising that man's fathers acting, she was critiquing the film itself (I personally also think Mamma Mia is a really shite film).
The only bit that felt unnecessary was the extension of the man in the tree story and I'm not sure how true that really is. But on the whole she just came across as interested in everyone and gave out praise when she thought something/someone was great.

Birlngsnotnicepeople · 29/11/2025 17:06

I love how she is so open about how everything she does is for the money. She really doesn't give a fuck about keeping to the rules . We need more women like this!

So we are to admire somebody telling the same stomach turning story over and over again for money?

I would admire a person who quietly makes a difference, who has flair and talent.

I was brought up on Carry on Films and bawdy humour. MM is uncomfortable to listen to in my opinion.

How do you know whether they are appalled or shocked. Anyway, it's a reaction and it gets laughs.

I hate women who seem to think it’s cool and laudable to try to outdo men with the coarse humour about wanking and suchlike. ‘I’m not a lady, me!’ That doesn’t make her funny or interesting.

I don’t. But neither do you. The laughs always look forced.

It’s not a gender th8ng. Those kind of stories aren't funny whoever tells them.

I'm sure your sons would be horrified at the thought. Average Bloke often not so much sadly.

Yes. They aren’t loutish. My elder one loves a domestic life with his gf, cooking together etc. My younger one too (but doesn’t live with gf as too young). But they both love all that cooking together and hanging out with their gf’s. They are both green flag guys (yes, proud mum 😊).

It’s not funny when men do it and it’s not funny when women do it. I like a bit of bawdy humour but only when it’s genuinely funny.

I like her and find her funny.
But then again my grandma was equally foul mouthed and hair raising so maybe she just makes me nostalgic!

Lafamiliaestodo · 29/11/2025 08:37

Totally disagree with this. People who gurn and posture like she does for attention do it because their ego requires it. If she wasnt getting the attention, she'd be furious.

Also, if she truly didnt care then she wouldnt be so abrasively rude about others. If you genuinely dont care, you dont unleash a tirade of abuse at people who might disagree with your approach or opinions.

She cares. Very much so.

I do think her memoir is worth a read ( films like Harry Potter, Romeo & Juliet, Age of Innocence) & an interesting family circle growing up (she got painted by Augustus John as a teen among other things).

I think it also explains partly why she acts like this. She seems to be in eternal rebellion against her strict parents. Sad to still be in that stage in your 80s!

I forgot that...

I honestly think what she said about du Pre in her memoir was unforgiveable. If she did ask for euthanasia, why is that Miriam's to reveal? Her poor family...

I've thought before she seems racist. Interesting to see others feel the same.

It's sad really, she's done some brilliant work with amazing people (the Charles Dickens stuff in particular) but she thinks the most interesting thing about herself is wanking men off.

How does she seem racist?

AInightingale · 29/11/2025 09:29

She was on Wogan or something years ago, I remember watching with my mum, who was very taken by her. Just chatty and warm and funny, and full of passion for Dickens. What the hell has happened to her/to television? Are we supposed to be happier, so much more 'advanced' now? It's all so depressing.

She is great talking about Dickens - she has more in her arsenal than 'dirty old lady', so why can't she show it?

Carla786 · 29/11/2025 20:06

ForHazelTiger · 29/11/2025 09:45

It's not the same thing at all. Men and women are different. The sexual politics are very different.

Hmm...you mean it's worse if a woman does it? Or better? Why?
