Mason absolutely should backtrack.
He got this so wrong.
The OBR leak beggars belief and to see journalists crowing about it minutes before Rachel Reeves came in to make the speech was, in my opinion, really poor.

The leak is so egregious it is hard to believe it is a mistake.

As someone with a lifetimes experience in IT (I built a ZX80 with my own hands) there is no way the sums spunked on government IT can be justified with incidents like this and the Afghan data breach.

One day we might actually take data protection seriously. Maybe we should have a sweepstake on it ? 2100 sound overly optimistic ?

If you are interested in the factors that have led to the court backlog then you can start with the lack of investment and loss of experienced staff.

As for Jenrick suggesting courts sit around the clock - we don’t have the staff or facilities to do this largely because of the lack of investment and (any) strategic planning since 2010!

The Tories were quite happy to cling to the title of party of law and order when it suited them (ie extend prison sentences) just not so much when it came to investing in the systems that kept courts running. Bloody Hypocrites.

We don't have the infrastructure for that.

No of course we don’t. Which he knows. So it was pointless, vacuous twaddle.

Notonthestairs · 02/12/2025 16:20

If the Tories had spent less on NI giveaways and put a bit more thought & cash in to our falling down courts, overcrowded prisons etc we would have been in a much better position.

As it stands they’ve directly contributed to the situation they are now complain about.

And that’s before you factor in the giant waste of time, energy and money wasted on Brexit.

MaybeNotBob · 02/12/2025 17:18

Looking at the budget, I do think she's made a major cock-up on business rates for hospitality. A one year 40% discount when they've risen 4 fold in some cases is simply going to mean that pubs are closing - with the loss of jobs, and also the effects on communities.

Depressing.

I heard someone interviewed on the radio on budget day who indicated it wasn’t so much a leak as a failure in security - it was possible to get into the system and ‘guess’ the web address for the report. This is a different scenario in lots of ways - but I haven’t heard it said since.

I read somewhere (sorry can't remember where) that there had been about 30 attempts before they had the right url

I’ve had that version from several sources. Apparently a journalist took the link from the Spring Statement and changed March to November and there it was. Incredibly sloppy security, barely worthy of the name.

Possibly because it's bollocks.

Firstly on what planet is "a failure of security" better than an unintended leak ?

And secondly, how does guessing that substituting "Nov" for "Oct" at the end of a URL (as an example) count as a leak ?

It never happened. Good grief this is just nonsense.

It was leaked by someone within the OBR. That's why there was a hasty resignation.

So they weren't using "AI" then ....

Not sure about that - I also read yesterday that there had been multiple attempts to access the system both on this budget day but also on previous budget days, The OBR was too small to have it's own IT dept so was using contractors

I was going to post it yesterday because I didn't really understand and would have liked someone to explain

Anyway it's still all being investigated so perhaps it will become clearer in future

I don’t think it was leaked. I genuinely think someone managed to get into it in the way described, it’s too ridiculous to be made up. Apparently Hughes was constantly at loggerheads with Reeves and this was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

It’s the distinction between someone at OBR deliberately leaking and sabotaging the government and poor security meaning journalists can get in.

I think there was a report yesterday. I think Tim’s that the url was tried 32 times from one IP address until they managed to download it successfully (presumably when the document was put online to be published later) there were also a number of other attempts from different IP addresses. Which does sort of suggest that more than one journalist knew that the OBR had this gap in security. Which makes you wonder how many times it has been done before and not leaked.

Farage has told donors he expects a deal or merger between his party and the Conservatives ahead of the next general election, suggesting he does not believe he can sweep to power alone.

That's quite a shift of tone.

I wonder if Farage is rattled by the racism accusations and the Gill scandal?

I can't see a Tory/Reform coalition working. Farage would definitely want to be in the driving seat. Badenoch's ego wouldn't take kindly to that!

Stunned. DD is 30 next month and the thought she might have been at school with him is gobsmacking.

He's already doing a merger with the tories- 1 ex mp at a time.
They are already one and the same in all but name.
