Baldylovingbeard · 26/11/2025 13:29

please try and convince me otherwise…..

What a joke this government are!!! ( UK)

Let’s just tax everyone who earns a bit of cash!!! Oh and while we’re at it… go on have loads more children it’s ok others will pay for them!!! Cutting the 2child benefit cap! If you decide to have multiple children you should be able to afford to provide for them. NOT expect others too!!!!! If you fall on hard times and you’ve worked and contributed to paying tax than you are within your rights to claim tax this is what benefits were made for, it’s not a means to not work, have more kids….etc!

Oh and if you work really hard and want to put some money by for you later days in life…. You’ll be taxed!

My situation:
Part time work, full time mum to 1 child. I work for myself and earn around 10k this money usually pays for things our daughter needs… clothes, clubs, any treats.
Husband works long hours, his under a lot of stress with his job, he has worked his way to and earns a very good salary 100k he gets taxed 60% you do the maths on that! We live in a 3 bed around £280k so nothing crazy but live within our means. We have one car! One holiday a year! Put money into savings! Pension! our daughter goes to one after school club. My husband got kicked out of home at 16…. He has worked with no help from family or friends and I believe he has worked very hard to get to where he is now. we are generous with charity’s and try our best to help out when we can if we can!

I completely agree

‘Moot point’

Very Labour, who needs growth.

Sort of assumes that extra £5k the fearful for their finances on £125k actually would stimulate growth.

Unfortunately there does need to be some amount of taxation as not everything can be truly private. Even with a tiny state, as long as the state exists, no matter the size, taxes will always exist.

You know the British civil service was around 4,000 people during the British Empire? Now there are in excess of a half a million staff. Insane size.

Good, I’m glad you agree that we do indeed need to pay taxes.

Research on the 2 child limit showed that it hardly had any impact on fertility. The number of children in poverty has increased since the limit was introduced.

So the idea that people happily have lots of children knowing the taxpayer will pay for them isn’t based in fact. What is happening is that people have 3 or more children who can afford them at the time then fall on hard times.

You live in fantasy land if you truly believe that.

I’m just having a read about electric vehicles and hybrids being taxed come 2028. As a hybrid owner my car only gives me a small amount of mileage until it switches over to petrol where I already pay fuel duty. I’m interested as to how they will calculate what I owe them on the electric miles the car does.

'Taxpayer funded children' is not how I would think of it, and nor would I think anyone decides 'I'm going to get myself 4 taxpayer funded children'. I think babies born to women who need some financial support should not be penalized for being the third or fourth baby born to those women.

What about babies born to normal families who are going to have to pay way more tax now ? Did you know you don’t get housing benefit if you have a mortgage you know how many families are struggling to keep a roof over their kids head and now they’re going to be taxed more to pay for other people’s kids?
like I said getting pregnant at 15 I’m not perfect but being a grown adult and having a multitude of children and expecting everyone else to pay for them is taking the piss. Labour won’t get in again after this so the next government will just reverse this

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/11/2025 14:59

@Nowdontmakeamess Yeah but that is not what the OP said is it? She said "Husband works long hours, his under a lot of stress with his job, he has worked his way to and earns a very good salary 100k he gets taxed 60%"

He is not getting taxed at 60% on £100k.

You're not wrong , OP, but sadly anyone who remembers the 1970s pretty much knew that this would happen..... and yet the electorate voted them in 🤷‍♀️

Thankfully my conscious is clear. I would never vote labour since the Blair days. They don’t give any more of a toss though than any other party. All politicians are only in it for themselves or they wouldn't have become a politician.

Steady on. I agree that taxes exist. Nobody should ever feel pressured to say they appreciate paying them, though.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 26/11/2025 15:01

Tax is in bands. It goes up as you go over certain thresholds. Above a certain level I believe it’s then 40%

Meh go back to voting Tory or worst, vote Reform and let poor people suffer again then.

BoredZelda · 26/11/2025 13:38

If taxing our joint 130k income more means low paid workers pay less, I’m ok with that.

Why don't you make a voluntary overpayment of tax then if you can afford it?

That way you can be happy with your contribution and those who don't wish to or have different circumstances to you aren't forced to pay tax that they can't afford?

That would maximise your freedom of choice? Or you could give directly to a charity?

Happy for the poor people to work! Too many idle people.

This. I supported the 2 child limit when it was first introduced but it's done nothing to stop the feckless popping out children but it has plunged those children into poverty which isn't good for anyone long term.

The thing is, that's what is going to happen. I would never ever have believed it a few years ago but I absolutely believe that if there is a General Election anytime soon, Reform will get in. Labour have opened the door and waved them in.

You do realise lifting the cap will predominantly benefit working families right?
Or have you missed that point completely?

It’s literally what is going to happen. Labour has made that an absolute certainty. This is the worst government in living memory.

Some people just have enough intelligence to realise that a contribution to a functioning society is necessary so don’t begrudge paying it, even more so if they’re in a more fortunate position than the average person.

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/11/2025 15:06

Do people realise the main reason we need more tax income is the aging population - pensions, care costs and NHS funding have increased hugely and are not likely to come down any time soon.

InlandTaipan · 26/11/2025 15:06

Well if people truly think Reform are going to improve their lives then obviously they should vote for them. I fear they are likely to get one hell of a shock if things come to that though. Bit like the Maga fools w Trump.

Thedevilhasfinallycaughtupwithhim · 26/11/2025 15:06

I think one of the problems with labour is that they rely on people on lower wages/ people on benefits/ to vote them in. If they make life less comfortable for them, they’ll just vote for someone else.

Yikes.

LakieLady · 26/11/2025 15:07

I'm glad they're doing away with the 2-child cap.

No-one can see the future, and a family that could comfortably support 3, 4 or more kids can suffer unexpected changes that mean they can no longer do so. What are they supposed to do, put the surplus children into care?

I've recently retired from working in welfare rights. My first "capped" case was a family with 4 children who had been very comfortably off until the father had a complete breakdown and fucked off abroad. His business had failed and their mortgaged home had been repossessed, so the mother had to rent privately. Thankfully, she had a decent job with a good salary (nursing sister), but she was still utterly skint and the 4 of them were crammed into a 3-bed privately rented house where the 3rd bedroom was barely a box room.

Since then, I had several cases where the cap has caused significant hardship, and the children have suffered as a result.

We'll need more people working and contributing to support the ever increasing elderly population, unless AI does away with a lot of jobs.

“you could give directly to a charity?”

Believe it or not, that’s what many people do - especially when they appreciate how very fortunate they are.
