Tax TAx TAX!!!!!! Fuming at our government!

1000 replies

Baldylovingbeard · 26/11/2025 13:29

please try and convince me otherwise…..

What a joke this government are!!! ( UK)

Let’s just tax everyone who earns a bit of cash!!! Oh and while we’re at it… go on have loads more children it’s ok others will pay for them!!! Cutting the 2child benefit cap! If you decide to have multiple children you should be able to afford to provide for them. NOT expect others too!!!!! If you fall on hard times and you’ve worked and contributed to paying tax than you are within your rights to claim tax this is what benefits were made for, it’s not a means to not work, have more kids….etc!

Oh and if you work really hard and want to put some money by for you later days in life…. You’ll be taxed!

My situation:
Part time work, full time mum to 1 child. I work for myself and earn around 10k this money usually pays for things our daughter needs… clothes, clubs, any treats.
Husband works long hours, his under a lot of stress with his job, he has worked his way to and earns a very good salary 100k he gets taxed 60% you do the maths on that! We live in a 3 bed around £280k so nothing crazy but live within our means. We have one car! One holiday a year! Put money into savings! Pension! our daughter goes to one after school club. My husband got kicked out of home at 16…. He has worked with no help from family or friends and I believe he has worked very hard to get to where he is now. we are generous with charity’s and try our best to help out when we can if we can!

And people with £5M houses can afford to pay the extra council tax. If they can’t they are likely someone who inherited their property and they need to get off their arse and earn.

ReacherJack · 26/11/2025 15:33

I think that the abolition of the child benefit cap has been warmly received by most of us.

A big way to decrease the working age welfare bill is to have more affordable housing - so i assume all the anti tax rise people are keen for measures to build much more housing and deflate the insane house price bubble?

House price crash NOW!

If we're not prepared to pay for them which public services should we cut?

You asked me if I was aware it would predominantly help working families so I wondered if you knew the difference between child benefit and universal credit seeing as most uc claimants quite literally don’t work? And look I’m not begrudging anyone who needs help I’ve been there but you can’t deny people who have 4+ kids while claiming are taking the piss. You can’t expect tax payers to vote labour again

And many of those out of work with no intention of working who have multiple children will still have the benefit cap in place. It's a false narrative that people have children to get more money.

I personally wouldn't vote labour again for other reasons. But seeing the extent of poverty and the sheer detrimental impact it has on children and their families makes me glad this government are doing something to improve it slightly. I do think it's tokenism from the labour government because there are other things that could be done to bridge the impact of poverty on young people.

This budget was not about services, it's about cash handouts

Good luck with the wrath of boomers with that one. Yikes.

How will they have the benfit cap in place if it is being lifted?

PigeonsandSquirrels · 26/11/2025 15:40

I’m just unsure why they’ve frozen the interest rate at its height on my student loan (none of the other plans though… just plan 2 as though that’s fair). The whole point of it being interest dependent is that ok sometimes I pay more because it’s high but then it drops when it’s lower… except now? No now I have to pay 7.9% interest because they decided so out of nowhere

ledmeup · 26/11/2025 14:11

Also, £2m is the price of a 3/4 bedroom terrace in London - hardly a “mansion”.

In some parts of London. There are plenty of parts where you can buy a terrace for well under 2m

I agree. People have wild ideas about London house prices. I live in a nice suburb and my 3 bed detached house is worth about 750k.

The two child cap is being lifted. The overall cap on the total amount a family can be paid in benefits remains.

The cap doesn’t apply if one person in a family has a disability or something like adhd or autism.
If you have eight kids the chance of at least one having autism or adhd is quite high

Watchweek · 26/11/2025 15:45

RedTagAlan · 26/11/2025 14:55

Yeah. I might head over to a " My DH had an affair and left me. What benefits am I entitled to?" thread.

At least they can do maths over there.

But that is a different issue.
Labour should get a grip of men who have kids, wander off and never support their children financially. Leaving either mum or the tax payer to bring them up.

A vote winner for me!

I don't think that is fair. I would vote for NI on pensions. Social care costs are downing LAs.

The child benefit cap that is being lifted is purely for how many children you can claim for on UC. However, there is an entirely separate cap on how much a household can claim in benefits. https://www.gov.uk/benefit-cap/benefit-cap-amounts.

There are cases where household do not have this e.g working households, in receipt of disability benefits etc.
https://www.gov.uk/benefit-cap/when-youre-not-affected

Benefit cap

There is a limit on the total amount of benefit that most people aged 16 to under State Pension age can get - benefits affected, benefit cap amount.

Good luck with the wrath of boomers with that one. Yikes.

It’s not just boomers. I’m 8 years away from state pension. I’ve factored that into my retirement calculations. I’ll have worked for 51 years. Why should someone who hasn’t worked or hasn’t saved get a state pension and someone who has contributed to pensions for others for over 50 years get nothing? I’m not rich. I come from a very poor background and have worked hard all my life, never inherited anything. If you’re going to means test state pensions you need to allow people to opt out and divert their contributions to their own pensions.

anniegun · 26/11/2025 15:49

There was very little in this budget that will hurt someone in the OPs shoes. Certainly nothing that the previous government hadnt already done

I think you are in cloud cuckoo land or you are a labour MP. Polling is clear, the general public did not want the cap lifted, It is a sop to the labour MPs to shore up Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves positions.

Correct.

Poor/lack of planning for the future should always be punished, never rewarded. But this is the current British government and sections of the electorate that voted them in. They hate you.

anniegun · 26/11/2025 15:50

They should have put NI on all income and reduced income tax accordingly
