Do you wear “normal” clothes when cooking?

Was chatting to a friend about this. When I get home from work or even from being out and about, I almost always get changed into my comfy home clothes. I feel strange cooking in my nicer clothes and worry I might stain them (an apron does’t cover my arms for example). She was surprised to hear that and uses her good clothes for everything without being bothered. Made me wonder if I am the weird one! What clothes do you normally cook in and do you use aprons?

I don’t really have a concept of ‘good clothes’. I come home from work or wherever and usually wear the same clothes until bedtime unless I’m gardening or doing something particularly messy.

If I was doing a marathon session of deep frying stuff I'd change out of anything nice I had on.

But usually when I'm cooking it's the evening and my clothes are going in the wash soon anyway so I don't bother.

Sleepyandtiredandlazy · 26/11/2025 08:35

I agree with you OP.
The first thing I do when I come home is change in to my " around the house " clothes. Comfortable ones, and at this time of year warm.
That's what we do as a family.

YellowCherry · 26/11/2025 08:35

Personally I don't bother changing out of my work clothes or wearing an apron. I probably should but I just CBA!

Rocknrollstar · 26/11/2025 08:36

When i was wearing suits for work I would change. these days, unless I have been somewhere special (very rare) I usually put an apron on to protect my clothes from splashes.

cornbunting · 26/11/2025 08:37

Always wear whatever I'm wearing, but if I'm properly dressed up it's unlikely I'd be cooking anyway.

I always wear a pinny when cooking, but that's pretty standard practice, surely?

Lennonjingles · 26/11/2025 08:37

I think it’s more being comfortable, if I ever wore skirts/dresses, I definitely would change, same as if I had a white shirt on or one that would stain when splashed with food/oil, but I am a messy cook, it’s different if you are just putting a ready meal in to cook. I also have an apron to use if I am frying anything.

I do the same - comfy clothes (that are easy to wash) as soon as I come home and I cook wearing those!

Andonthatbombshell · 26/11/2025 08:40

Never. I shower and put on house clothes (trackpants and sweatshirt) as soon as I get home.
I want to be comfortable and warm.

Caspianberg · 26/11/2025 08:40

No. Normal clothes. I’m cooking or
prepping at least three meals a day, plus more if baking anything. I would be forever changing clothes. I can’t say any clothes has ever been ruined from cooking

ForZanyAquaViewer · 26/11/2025 08:41

I come home and change into comfy clothes that don’t have London grime on them (and take off my make up and put my hair up). Then all activities (including cooking) happen in those clothes.

scalt · 26/11/2025 08:41

I make sure I'm not wearing white or pale clothes.

I make a point of wearing shoes in the kitchen, in case of dropping knives or other things. For me, being barefoot in the kitchen is too risky.

MyIvyGrows · 26/11/2025 08:42

I find these kinds of threads so fascinating. I change into tracksuit bottoms or shorts if I’ve been wearing a nice dress or blouse or something, but not if I’ve just been regular clothes at work (smart casual office, I’d only dress up for an external meeting). I do have an apron but it never occurs to me to wear it unless I’m doing a lot of cooking or baking. I wouldn’t put it on to boil pasta or do a stir fry.

PluckyChancer · 26/11/2025 08:44

Yep, always change my clothes as soon as I get home into my comfies and DS and DH do this too.

I wear my comfies first thing in the morning until I get changed to go out, so some days I’ll only be wearing my comfies all day. I have ‘indoors’ and ‘outdoors’ clothes.

Comfies = pants, joggers, T shirt, sweat-shirt type attire plus slippers. No bra!

I’d never wear my comfies to go out though. Always put fresh outdoors clothes on for that task.

Screamingabdabz · 26/11/2025 08:44

Yes I’m a get changed person.

BiddyPopthe2nd · 26/11/2025 08:45

It depends. If I am wearing a particularly nice outfit and pan frying a duck breast splattering fat - I’ll change. If I in am regular work gear and reheating a spag Bol or throwing something into the oven, then I’ll do that as I am, as I only get a couple of hours at home before bed so it’s not worth changing twice.

But on weekends when I am doing big meal prep or batch cooking sessions, I absolutely wear less nice clothes as I am often messy on those days.

Same here. Get home, quick shower, change into "comfies" then start on dinner, washing etc before chilling out.

OffToSeaInABlizzard · 26/11/2025 08:46

It’s your friend who’s weird, OP, not you.

I was brought up from childhood to change into home clothes as soon as we got home from school. My parents set that example - their considerations were a combination of hygiene and preservation of nice things.

As an adult I have quite expensive tastes in clothes so don’t keep things I’d wear outside on at home. And the thought of clothes that have been on train or taxi seats, or squashed up against any and everyone on the Tube alighting on my bed or going into my kitchen is just … yuck!

(It’s funny - until Covid I had very little conception of purposely bought ‘loungewear’. Everyone in my family had always just worn their oldest, shabbiest clothes at home. There weren’t enough of those for lockdown so I had to discover Uniqlo and Community Clothing.)

I only wear an apron if I’m baking, or if there’s something likely to spatter uncontrollably.

Absolutely 💯this!

So what if you're wearing jeans or trousers....? You just... keep them on until bedtime?!😐

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 26/11/2025 08:52

I don't normally change, I do have some slobbing about clothes, but if I wore those every evening I think I'd feel a bit slobbish

Yes. (Why wouldn’t I? I wear trousers far more than skirts or dresses, though I do wear both…?)

I

Pranksters · 26/11/2025 08:57

I just have clothes. Keep the same ones on all day. I change out of my work uniform as I’m a nurse, obviously. But on my days off I just wear my clothes, all day.

And I don’t know anyone who wears an apron whilst cooking.

totallyoutnumbered · 26/11/2025 08:59

I work for myself and based mostly at home. I wear my usual clothes but then as soon as I’m finished with work I put something comfy on. In reality that’s usually a pair of joggers and a sweater during the winter. I never wear an apron but this thread has inspired me to get one. If I was wearing something nice or white then I definitely change as I’m about the clumsiest person when it comes to spilling food and cooking mess 🤦🏼‍♀️

Disasterclass · 26/11/2025 08:59

This is interesting. I don’t get changed, and hadn’t really realised it was a thing, but then I don’t have a particularly smart work place. I mainly wear jeans, trousers, sometimes dresses, but I find those all comfy. What are people getting changed from into their comfy clothes? Do you wear suits to work?

perhaps this is based on people who got changed out of school uniform as a kid, and those that didn’t? We didn’t really have much of a uniform, so it wasn’t really a thing growing up
