Do you wear “normal” clothes when cooking?

Was chatting to a friend about this. When I get home from work or even from being out and about, I almost always get changed into my comfy home clothes. I feel strange cooking in my nicer clothes and worry I might stain them (an apron does’t cover my arms for example). She was surprised to hear that and uses her good clothes for everything without being bothered. Made me wonder if I am the weird one! What clothes do you normally cook in and do you use aprons?

Just feel comfortable on whatever.you wear
Would also wear an apron if l was cooking anything messy or pungent.

<Imagines being invited to dinner at the home of someone who goes straight from mucking out stables to preparing the meal>

<Finds self unaccountably busy that night>

I agree with you OP.
The first thing I do when I come home is change in to my " around the house " clothes. Comfortable ones, and at this time of year warm.
That's what we do as a family.

Same here (except the baby)

I don't get changed when I come home, I cook in whatever I am wearing. Often I need to go out again anyway. My kids don't get changed either, they usually already have 2 sets of clothes going in the laundry basket, that's more than enough! (uniform and sport kit of the day)

That's why I shower every evening, and I put my clothes in the wash pretty much every day.

I am here with the pinny people ! I don't necessarily have 'nice' clothes underneath. If I (often) inadvertently wipe my hands on my front I know no damage / stain done. I can be messy ! And I love my pinnies. One fell apart recently and I was sad. I must have inherited this habit from my mum, never out of the kitchen (unlike me), always wore a pinnie. Now I imagine it's the Masterchef apron and I am going to do it justice....ha ha 🤭

If I have clean knickers on at the beginning of the day I feel like I'm winning at life, so forget changing during the course of the day!

To avoid cooking smells on my clothes I always cook naked, except when frying sausages - partly to avoid hot spiiting fat but also as I once pricked the wrong thing! 😲

🤣

Aren’t any of you regularly going out again after you get home, though? I get that some people have small children and a partner working shifts or away, so evening childcare is an issue (for years DH and I had to take going out at night in turns) — but that’s not everyone. Getting into ‘house’ clothes or pyjamas after you get in from work seems to be declaring the day over very early.

I change into comfortable clothes when I come home. I wear an apron for all cooking and baking.

Out where? On a weekday? Nope.

OffToSeaInABlizzard · 29/11/2025 21:04

Ha! During my professional life in London I sometimes lived there and sometimes commuted. When I lived in London, going out happened straight from work. When I commuted, again I’d go out straight from work and get home maybe at the tail end of Newsnight, generally later. So, no, no going out once I was home!

I don't wear good clothes in the house because we have lap cats and I've had far too many items ruined by their claws.

So I always change when I get in, usually into hoodies and yoga pants or similar, before I sit down and the cats pile on me. I also wear those clothes when I get up and keep them on for WFH unless I expect to have calls with external clients or senior colleagues.

We do go out after work but in that case I'd get changed again because I can't sit down in good clothes because cats.

Really? I go out a fair amount on week nights now DS can be left for a few hours. Various things. A film, a gig, a drink with friends, a choir rehearsal, a class. Though it helps that I live very close to the city centre.

Are those of you who feel just as comfortable in tailored trousers, skirts and tights, blouses, as joggers, by any chance a normal weight/ on the slender side?

My overweightness dictates that if I am wearing a zipped office skirt, that fits me standing up and doesn't fall off, then when I sit down the band will dig in painfully and it will feel tight over my thighs. Wearing a blouse that's cut in a professional non baggy way will probably mean it's tight at the back. And having weight generally to shift around means that if I flung myself on the sofa in suit trousers, they might just rip.

So unless I'm sitting or walking formally i want to get them all off as soon as possible to lounge around and lie down.

PJ trousers or stretchy leggings won't do this but will be too baggy to wear outside. Some work trousers have elastic top like yoga pants style, and I wouldn't necessarily change out of them, they are ok for in and out.

I think body shape is most constraining.

25percentoffeverything · 29/11/2025 22:05

I put my pjs when i am ready for bed, I can't imagine being ready for bed at 8pm!

Even if I didn't have to pick up the kids from club, was randomly invited by a friend living in the same street for a quick catch up, or just popped to the supermarket because we forgot/run out/ fancy something?

I don't even understand the concept of "uncomfortable clothes", unless you wear a ball gown, why do you wear uncomfortable clothes? An expensive suit you want to protect fair enough, but suits are getting rare nowadays.

Choosing not to cook (or lounge) in my ‘out’ clothes has nothing to do with comfort - all my clothes are comfortable. 😄 My concerns are partly hygiene and partly preservation. Most of the clothes I wear outside the house - for work or social life, have been chosen with care and probably cost … more than I can afford to waste. I don’t want to be constantly sending tailored things to be dry cleaned, and I launder knitwear as rarely as possible, so I’d be mad to cook in those clothes when I have old, worn out, raggedy things to change into for home life.

Yes same here, I said earlier in the thread that I don't wash things as much as I think other people do, so avoid unnecessary washing by wearing things lightly. Also to answer a point above i am slim but wear more fitted clothes than when I was overweight so don't want to sit about in them when I could change into more relaxed clothing even though my day clothes aren't uncomfortable as such

Oh if I had beautiful dry clean only tailored clothes then I would get changed!
