Do you wear “normal” clothes when cooking?

Was chatting to a friend about this. When I get home from work or even from being out and about, I almost always get changed into my comfy home clothes. I feel strange cooking in my nicer clothes and worry I might stain them (an apron does’t cover my arms for example). She was surprised to hear that and uses her good clothes for everything without being bothered. Made me wonder if I am the weird one! What clothes do you normally cook in and do you use aprons?

I wouldn't cook in fancy clothes, I'd change into something else (though having thought that the thought of cooking in a cocktail frock appeals to me more as I get older).

I put on joggers or loose trousers as soon as I get home. I don’t know why you wouldn’t want to be comfy at home.

See, all my clothes are comfy. Today I’m wearing fleece lined leggings and a hoodie. Even if I wear jeans, they’re comfy.

I find jeans perfectly comfy too. Even on the rare occasions I wear more formal trousers or skirt and tights etc they aren't uncomfortable. Not to the extent that there's any benefit to me to change that outweighs the effort of changing.

I might "finish off" in my nice clothes if we have guests but no way am I cooking in them generally

Loopylalalou · 26/11/2025 18:46

I take my bra off. Does that count?

Jane143 · 26/11/2025 18:51

I just wear whatever I have on, but wouldn’t cook just before going out dressed up

Babybear260 · 26/11/2025 18:53

It depends. If I’m at home anyway then it’s just what I’d wear at home but if I’ve been out then sometimes I just start cooking in ‘nicer’ outfits…. Sometimes I end up spilling a tomato sauce on something white and then I WISH I had changed

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 26/11/2025 19:06

I change out of my work trousers when I get home and put jeans on (I live in jeans), but don't bother changing the top half. I don't wear my best clothes for work anyway.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 26/11/2025 19:23

I change as soon as I get in from work to something more comfortable then once I’ve cleaned up I shower and put my PJs on. I wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing work clothes or jeans all evening.

Jiski · 26/11/2025 19:25

I wear the same clothes for everything except bed. I have an apron I never use.

MyspecialMug · 26/11/2025 20:46

When I'm in and know I wont have to go back out, I change into old clothes I have for wearing around the house, easy to clean and dry, no ironing.
I even have paint marks and other non removable stains ie, grease, bleach.
I have a few with no stains I wear at weekend.
But it makes me comfy, and able.to clean and cook, and paint and garden etc with worrying about them.getring stained.
Have going out clothes, hung and ironed, waiting, for.my public image.

verybighouseinthecountry · 26/11/2025 20:53

Always change into lounge wear at home to cook/clean, cooking smells can be really strong and sticky to your clothing. I watched a cleaning video recently where a women was deep cleaning her bathroom, scrubbing the inside of the shower screen with bleach and she was wearing 'good' clothes and had her hair and makeup done. I'd feel the need to shower and change my clothes after that.

livelovelough24 · 26/11/2025 20:59

Very interesting how different people’s responses are. I definitely have different clothes for different occasions. When I get home from work, I change into my “house clothes” and put on an apron before I start cooking.

JillMW · 26/11/2025 21:29

Come through the door into the shower room, strip off, shower and into my scruffs. My neighbour laughs that my scruffs are smarter than most peoples clothes but they are comfy and easy to wash after cooking, cleaning, lounging gardening etc.

Soya dumplings... 😁

I am soooo messy when I cook, I repurpose my husband's old shirts to wear over my clothes to soak up the gravy and flour and human blood... hate smelling of food after food is gone...

This except I don’t even own an apron.

WonderfulSmith · 26/11/2025 22:42

Nope. Same clothes on all day. I might get changed into ‘lounge wear’ that I keep just for the house if I’ve had a shower or my clothes are dirty or sweaty.

Going downstairs in clothes I’ve worn to bed makes me feel odd. Pyjamas are for upstairs only. The only reason to sit in the living room in pyjamas is that you are off school sick watching Crown Court.

celticprincess · 26/11/2025 22:50

I don’t really have different sets of clothes begin work clothes (dresses with legging) that I don’t need to change out of when I get home as they are quite comfy, and my jeans, t shirts and hoodies that I tend to wear on a weekend or when I’m not working or working from home. I don’t change for things like cooking. I take my child to after school activities in whatever I have been wearing that day so I can be sat at the stables watching a riding lesson in either jeans and a hoody and big coat or my work dresses and leggings with a big coat - often don’t have time, pick child up from school having just left work and the them straight to the stables.

I’ve never been a change into PJs after work though. I only wear clothes I’m comfortable in. Even when I used to wear more of a suit type outfit, I’d not really change after work when doing the cooking.

If I’m getting dressed up to ‘go out’ to a function that requires smarter than my day to day clothes then I’ll get changed at the last minute.

No-one wear a pinafore for cooking these days?

Littlejellyuk · 27/11/2025 07:21

I like this idea. 💡
Now usually if I wear something fancy, and come home, I get changed into comfy pajamas, ☺️ but not everyday, and not when cooking, tbh. 🍳
In the winter time (such as now) as soon as DS gets home from school, if it has rained he will get straight in his pj's (as we walk to and from school) or in his swim costume, with warm onesie over, from swim class. 🏊‍♀️

In summer I just wear what I'm wearing until bedtime unless I'm going for a run or to the gym but in winter I get my cosy clothes and sliders on as soon as I get in.

I'm just like this! In summer we are likely to go for an after dinner stroll while it's still warm and light so I'd keep my nice clothes on.
I've just put my comfies on now as it's chilly, DH is doing the school run and I don't plan on leaving the house again! Also I rarely wear jeans in summer and although I like wearing them out, I can't relax on the sofa in them.

foxylady7172000 · 28/11/2025 13:21

Always :) and I wrap my hair in a towel!

GotMarriedInCornwall · 29/11/2025 16:25

I think I’m very much an anomaly.
Not only would it never occur to me to get changed when I get in, but the thought of wearing lounge wear genuinely horrifies me. I would find that far more uncomfortable than anything I could wear during the day.
I’m not making a judgement btw - I just find wearing joggers/pyjamas etc really uncomfortable and would rather be properly dressed (bra included, unless it’s particularly uncomfortable).

Picklejuiceleak · 29/11/2025 17:45

See I don’t like to cook in my PJs! I always have a shower and put clean ones on in the evening but if I go cook in them, they’ll smell!

I always cook in what I’m wearing (which is usually my horse clothes because I do the horses in the PM) and then it doesn’t matter if they smell.

Cooking smells on my clean PJs knocks me sick!

I do! Well, actually, it’s an apron, but I really want to make a pinafore next.
