Do you wear “normal” clothes when cooking?

Was chatting to a friend about this. When I get home from work or even from being out and about, I almost always get changed into my comfy home clothes. I feel strange cooking in my nicer clothes and worry I might stain them (an apron does’t cover my arms for example). She was surprised to hear that and uses her good clothes for everything without being bothered. Made me wonder if I am the weird one! What clothes do you normally cook in and do you use aprons?

Physically my bra doesn’t hurt. I just get sick of wearing it

This is really interesting to me because I can't say I ever really think about it. I can't really feel I'm wearing a bra so it would never occur to me to be sick of wearing it because it isn't noticeable that I am.

I'm really trying to feel it right now but I can't actually feel it really. Only time I do is if one of the straps falls down my arm.

I don’t really have comfy clothes as such. I wear pretty tidy clothes every day, even on my days off. I’m sat here now in jeans with a blue shirt. If I’m cooking I go in the laundry basket and chuck on my dh work top from the day before and pop it over what I’m wearing. Clothes stay clean and I get to smell him. Win win.

louderthan · 26/11/2025 10:08

I change when I get home. Can't imagine trying to relax in jeans/work trousers/skirt/tights.
I'm one of these dirty people who doesn't wash clothes after every wear though, so I don't want work clothes getting stained/covered in cat hair/smelling of cooking because I'm going to wear them again before they get washed.

GordonRamsey · 26/11/2025 10:18

To avoid cooking smells on my clothes I always cook naked, except when frying sausages - partly to avoid hot spiiting fat but also as I once pricked the wrong thing! 😲

isitmytime · 26/11/2025 10:23

I don’t get changed I just wear whatever I’ve had on for the day until I go to bed. Comfy clothes would just ado extra washing. If I’m having a day in the house or cleaning I’d wear more relaxed casual clothes like legging etc.
the only exception is when I get home from work I change out of my uniform but that’s so it gets washed for the next day

Yes, exactly. I can’t feel that I’m wearing it any more than I can feel I’m wearing knickers.

PInkyStarfish · 26/11/2025 10:56

I sometimes wear an apron.

PigeonsandSquirrels · 26/11/2025 10:56

Depends really. I do both but I also wear an oodie and an apron usually 😂 very glam

Hohumdedum · 26/11/2025 10:57

If I was wearing a suit or a ballgown I'd change.
Otherwise I just wear what I'm wearing. I don't work in a posh office or anything. Most of my clothes are just clothes.

Tbf it’s probably not as tight as it’s meant to be then. Technically. Although of course you should wear whatever size you want you should only be able to fit two fingers between the band and your body.

I've recently ruined a lovely ivory silk blouse so that's a no, from me: I don't change. But also a yes: I might from now on.

It’s correctly fitted! A correctly fitted bra shouldn’t be uncomfortable - that’s my point.

OriginalSkang · 26/11/2025 11:03

My bra is really loose because I have anxiety and anything 'constrictive' adds to a feeling of not being able to breathe. I can still feel it though! And would definitely rather not be wearing it

We have a casual dress code at work and I generally wear jeans and a tshirt. I normally change in to Pyjama bottoms when I get in

Edit to say - I can't feel my knickers at all, and they are tighter than my bra probably

You would laugh at my mum. Not only does she change into home clothes (she says they are all easy wash) to get cooking, she wears a shower hat. She says she doesn’t want the smell of the cooking in her hair, or she doesn’t want steam taking out her curls. Bit of a diva, my mum 😂😂😂

😂.

On my wedding day, my Dad (because he is in a time warp) asked me if I could "stick some toast on", I was in my wedding dress!

Goldenbear · 26/11/2025 11:11

I don't change if it is an office day as it's smart casual dress code and I will put most of it it on the wash unless a wool cardigan but I wouldn't wear the cardigan as too hot! I do have an apron but it has a small Christmas Robin on it, mainly racing green so I can wear it when it isn't Christmas but I don't tend to bother unless I have maybe a chiffon material style top and making for example a Thai curry, something that may splatter and can't be removed easily from a low degree wash.

Yes, that was one of the minor oddities I learned from Mn — that the first thing some people do, virtually on the doormat the moment they get home, is rip off their bra!

Yes, I've never really understood this either. Each to their own, but I'm more comfortable with a bra than without one. Possibly because I've got massive knockers? I don't know. But the lack of support when I'm not wearing a bra is uncomfortable if I'm doing stuff around the house. Weirdly, though, if I'm wearing tights they get taken off as soon as I get home.

Re. the cooking question - no, I don't get changed to cook dinner. But I don't really have a very formal wardrobe! I mostly work from home, and when I go into the office I'm usually in jeans or a casual dress and Docs/trainers. I imagine I'd get changed if I worked in the sort of place where you have to be smart and swan about in tailoring.

I never wear an apron, either. What can I say? All my clothes are black so staining isn't really an issue.

Echobelly · 26/11/2025 11:34

Nope, I cook in whatever I'm wearing... if I'm going out I might make sure I cook in my 'casuals' before I get changed into nice stuff though.

Lurkingandlearning · 26/11/2025 11:44

I was disappointed that your thread wasn’t about someone you know who dresses up in a full chef outfit every time they cook.

Having got over that I will join in. I wouldn’t cook in uncomfortable clothes or loose sleeves that might dip into the food and if I will be standing a long time I wear crocs. 🫣.

Yes, my garments could be hiding any amount of turmeric stains, but we will never know!

IsntItDarkOut · 26/11/2025 11:58

I put on joggers or loose trousers as soon as I get home. I don’t know why you wouldn’t want to be comfy at home.

Natsku · 26/11/2025 12:03

All my clothes are comfy so I don't change when I get home. I wear an apron though.

Zippedydodah · 26/11/2025 12:10

When I was working I would change into comfortable clothes or sometimes shower and into pyjamas. I always wear long apron when cooking, never deep fry and I rarely get spills on me 🤞🏻
Nowadays I just wear comfortable clothes pretty much all the time so just put on an apron.

notnorman · 26/11/2025 12:16

Decent work clothes go back on their hangers and I’m straight into Comfy stuff round the house.

Climbingout · 26/11/2025 12:18

I change into my comfy clothes (long sleeve top, fleece and joggers) when I know I'll be at home for the rest of the day, but I often do my cooking before that so I generally cook in my 'going out clothes'. Those are still fairly casual clothes though, jeans and a top. I don't change until fairly late in case I need to pop to the shop or in case there's a knock on the door.

notnorman · 26/11/2025 12:18

(I’m also sensitive to cooking smells in clothes- my colleague wore the clothes on Monday that she had worn on Sunday to cook a beef roast dinner - kept getting wafts of it all day 🤮🤮
