Do you wear “normal” clothes when cooking?

Was chatting to a friend about this. When I get home from work or even from being out and about, I almost always get changed into my comfy home clothes. I feel strange cooking in my nicer clothes and worry I might stain them (an apron does’t cover my arms for example). She was surprised to hear that and uses her good clothes for everything without being bothered. Made me wonder if I am the weird one! What clothes do you normally cook in and do you use aprons?

So what if you're wearing jeans or trousers....? You just... keep them on until bedtime?!😐

Well yes, else I’d be naked. Hmm

pottylolly · 26/11/2025 09:01

I’m Indian so yes I always change. I feel like keeping your nice clothes on while cooking is something only people who cook without spices (wet or dry) can do.

soupyspoon · 26/11/2025 09:01

Yes I have sitting around at home clothes

I annoyed myself the other day, I was wearing a very thick wool jumper which I rarely wash, I wear it for quite a long time between washing, most of my clothes I do the same but this one even more

No apron, managed to splash a load of milk on it, this was becuase I had not changed

I like to wear a black top also when cooking otherwise I cant see if Ive got hair on me that might go in the food, no sooner have I swept a load of hair off my clothing, theres another one just popped up

I think people that do cooking in their work or everyday clothes probably do the washing more than me I leave things for quite a while. I change my clothes a lot

In summer I just wear what I'm wearing until bedtime unless I'm going for a run or to the gym but in winter I get my cosy clothes and sliders on as soon as I get in.

Yes what on earth is wrong with jeans? or trousers ? I have jeans on at mo and sitting at my desk in my office at home. They are comfortable and more importantly for me warm
Unless i have a day in the office where i am meeting people or presenting what i put on in the morning stays on me all day till bed time. And to some peoples shock what i wore the day before might go back on me the next day.

Well obviously, because they are what I'm wearing that day.

I get up, shower, get dressed, wear those clothes all day whether cooking or not, take them off at bedtime.

Why fanny around with multiple outfits?

OffToSeaInABlizzard · 26/11/2025 09:13

Not sure why people who work from home in leisurewear are bothering to reply!

The OP is surely asking about people who spend the day away from home?

Livingonbananabread · 26/11/2025 09:15

I get changed after work, but not specifically to cook - just because my workwear is quite formal dresses/skirts/tailored trousers so I change into jeans and a jumper or something to relax at home. I don’t have house clothes or loungewear - if I’m working from home or at the weekend I’d wear the same thing all day unless I’m getting dressed up to go out in the evening.

WithIcePlease · 26/11/2025 09:17

I change to house clothes
I have a rare morning at home today to do cooking, house stuff.
I'm not going to change out of my pyjamas until I've done the cooking because I don't want to dirty proper clothes
Then I will put on round the house clothes

Yes. (Why wouldn’t I? I wear trousers far more than skirts or dresses, though I do wear both…?)

I

Because this is the behaviour of a psychopath!

Just kidding. But yeah, from when I was a child we would get home and get changed into "house clothes" so I just can't imagine ever sitting around in my outside clothes! It makes me feel uneasy 😂

I suppose that’s the difference. I don’t have a concept of ‘house clothes’. Also, I don’t wear anything uncomfortable, so what I wear to work is perfectly comfortable. I can’t imagine spending all day in restrictive clothes.

Well yes. None of my clothes are uncomfortable or so expensive I'd be worried about getting them dirty. Unless I'd been at a wedding or something but then I'd be coming home and straight to bed anyway.

Never got changed out of school uniform unless I was going to another activity that required different clothes. DC don't now either.

Andonthatbombshell · 26/11/2025 09:21

I know someone who "relaxes" and watches TV in skinny jeans. Psychopath 🤯😂.

Me! I do!

As do all my family and most of my friends😂In fact, I went round to a friends after work last week and took my joggers and a sweatshirt with me as I knew when I got there she would be changed already!

I have been known to take off my jeans / trousers as soon as I walk through the door as I feel claustrophobic😂They're fine during the day but as soon as I step into the house they feel weird and restrictive!!!

Crunchingleaf · 26/11/2025 09:25

When I used to wear more formal work clothes I would change as soon as I got home to something more comfortable.

I usually wouldn’t change to cook but if I was wearing something I really love or delicate to wash then I would change that before making a something that is hard to get out if I get splashed.

DappledThings · 26/11/2025 09:26

I have never felt the need to take my bra off when I get home either or felt it to be uncomfortable or restrictive.

I do, then get changed into pyjamas. I really don't want to be changing clothes multiple times a day. The only exception is after gardening.

Livingonbananabread · 26/11/2025 09:27

Oh! Ha - skinny (or alternative) jeans are what I change into to relax after work, not what I would change out of… haven’t owned joggers since school PE lessons

Winterwonderwhy · 26/11/2025 09:27

I don’t cook in my nicer clothes too. I have some really pricey jumpers so don’t want to be washing them all the time. I have a few sweatshirts that’s for ‘home’. I change into that as soon as I’m home.

alatusblack · 26/11/2025 09:28

You would laugh at my mum. Not only does she change into home clothes (she says they are all easy wash) to get cooking, she wears a shower hat. She says she doesn’t want the smell of the cooking in her hair, or she doesn’t want steam taking out her curls. Bit of a diva, my mum 😂😂😂

No, I’ve never really got this either!

ExquisiteDresses · 26/11/2025 09:28

None of us change unless we are dirty or sweaty, but we all dress very casually. It might have been different if any of us had a business dress code but DH and I never have had, one DC works somewhere casual too and the other is a student so no smart or restrictive clothes for any of us. I think my Dad used to change out of his suits when I was young but Mum never did and we never changed after school, neither did my DCs, apart from blazers off, it would never have occurred to us.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 26/11/2025 09:28

I don't have house clothes. I just have clothes.

I get up, get dressed, and wear those clothes all day, then get changed for bed at bed time. Any cooking etc is done in whatever clothes I'm wearing.

I'm WFH today, I'm in jeans and a jumper. (I'd also wear jeans and a jumper to the office fwiw)

I didn't get changed out of school uniform as a child either, just wore it till bed time - DM wasn't about to double the laundry pile with 2 outfits a day, and I don't blame her!

Denim4ever · 26/11/2025 09:28

I have cooking and evenings in clothes. I don't feel the cold, but DH does so I'm usually in a t shirt and old denim skirt and darker slippers for cooking. I get changed at some point after work. There are trackies and shorts I wear for cooking/evening in that probably would only be worn for that role but might occasionally be gardening clothes just before they go in the wash. I'm not very good at wearing an apron. DH does when he cooks though
